I'll wait.
No?
So why are some on THIS board acting as if he's Joe Montana?
I'll wait.
I agree with this. I takes much more than 2 games to determine a player's ability. Granted, we have seen Cousins play well (and poorly) in the past --- but this is also the first time we have seen him play in Gruden's offense. It's hard not to be excited over what Cousins has done.
In the past 2 games, Cousins has put up VERY good numbers. Over those 2 weeks, his performance has arguably been in the top 5 in the entire NFL and is #4 in the NFL in QBR this season. Now, is that because he played 2 of the worst defenses in the NFL or is it because he is a perfect fit for Gruden's offense? Only time will tell.
At this point, I would say it's unfair to not give Cousins credit where it is due. And it would also be unreasonable to say that if he continues putting up these numbers and centerpiecing an offense that is averaging an INCREDIBLE 37.5 ppg --- Gruden will most likely keep Cousins as the starter for at least the remainder of the season before opening it up to a competition over the summer. Players have and will continue to lose their positions to injury in the NFL. That is one of the reasons players don't want to be taken out; the talent pool is deep.
I also think it is reasonable to question whether Cousins can continue at this pace. He has played 2 of the worst DEFs in the NFL. We will get a better idea of what he is fully capable of in this offense on Oct. 6th.
This all being said, if Cousins' #s dip (which is almost certain to happen as most QBs can't keep up this pace), he has to understand this is RGIII's team. RGIII is a dynamic, incredibly talented, good leader, smart, and hard working QB. He is the franchise QB. It will take a lot to bench him without at least some sort of competition for the position..... but if Cousins continues to average 350 yards and 2.5 TDs a game passing, Gruden will have a very difficult decision on his hands.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.
