X-box or Playstation 2

Post by NikiH »

We are looking at upgrading. Right now poor Scott only has the PS One. We've had it forever. And for a few years it wasn't a priority to get a different one. But Jackson is actually enjoying some of the games on it now. So we are going to upgrade. Doing a little bit of research, it looks like the X-box is easier to connect to our home network for play with other people. But I could be wrong. The games are pretty much the same right? I mean mostly available on both platforms. Just wondering who prefers which and why.

Nikih, all though I am a Cowboy fan, you can trust me on this one. I am 34 and have been playing video games since the days of Intellivision and Colecovision.

Playstation 2 and Xbox are both easy to connect to the network. Playstation 2 is alot better. For the simple fact that the Video game market is dictated by our neighbors to the Far East. Also there are more games on the playstation. Also there are some games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and some others that are only available to playstation. X-box has a few games that are exclusive only to the X-Box, but the only one any good would be Halo. Also alot of 3rd party designers have not signed on to develope games onto the X-box.

To add to what gambit said, if you get a PS2, you can still keep and play all your PS1 games on it. I think if you are already invested in the PS platform, it makes sense to go to the PS2.

That having been said, xbox is the more powerful platform, and the built-in hard drive is a nice feature. It also does a decent job as a DVD player (if you buy the special remote).

Both are priced nicely now too, which is a plus for upgrading now.

The playstation 2 is also a DVD player, although it does not include the hard drive. You can buy the hard drive seperatly. Also the X-box Joysticks are huge and bulky.

but the downs about playstation Gambit forgot to mention is there are more accesories you have to buy.... also, this is Microsoft were talking about.... Bill Gates.... Xbox isn't gonna fold anytime soon... and it can only get better.... I've got both, so I think there both pretty good... yes, like Gambit said, there are certain games on both that are exclusive to each model.... but advantage and potential wise... I'd give the edge to Xbox..

Gambit do you have both platforms?

Yes, I know it's a DVD player, but I don't have one so I couldn't comment on how well it does. My point was that xbox is a decent DVD player (though definitely not the best). I do know you aren't required to purchase a special remote in order to play DVDs like you are with xbox (that is, you can control DVDs with the PS2 controller).

As for the size of the xbox controllers, the original models were quite large, but they've made them smaller, and there is a good variety of sizes/styles of controllers you can buy.

Yeah I actually have all 3. Xbox is like Sega, Sony will eat them up. I give X-Box 5 more years. Sony's fan base worldwide is to strong. The japanese designers that make the hottest games are in bed with Sony.

ROTFALMAO.... Sega was nowhere near XBOX..... I've got all 3 too... and XBOX isn't some fad... there gonna be around to compete... Bill's no dummy... He knows there's money to make in video games.... They might be in bed with Sony right now... but that doesn't mean they'll stay there.... other wise.... We wouldn't have had sega or sony... they would have all stay'd with Nintendo.....

Niki... whichever you choose will be good... they both have their + and - ...... It's just a matter of which + are more important to you... or you could always go and get both and then you won't have any problem's ;) I'm sure Scott would love that

But Sega had marquee characters. Sonic the freakin hedge hog. Trust me BTP the hottest games games come from Japanese designers and programmers. To them Gates is a Gaijin. BUT THAT NEITHER HERE NOR THERE. I think you hit the nail on the head with the suggestion. BUY BOTH SYSTEMS YOU CANNT GO WRONG.

I don't really need the DVD capability. We have a DVD player. I would rather have a DVD recorder so we will soon have that too! ;-)
BTP If I get him both then I have nothing to buy him for Christmas! He's hard enough to find gifts for!

If were basing this on Marquee character's, then go buy a Gamecube... cause Mario Bros rules the world... ;)

Though Gates doesn't have the top Japanesse programmers now... doesn't mean he won't have them one day....

I recommend you getting the PS2. You can play all your PS1 games on the PS2. I have all the systems except the X-Box. I like the X-Box, but there are many more game titles available for the PS2. I'm 31 and have been playing video games since the Atari 2600. I thought about getting an X-Box but I heard that the new X-box2 coming out in 2006 won't be able to play the games for the current X-Box because it will have a different company doing the processor. The main selling point of the X-box is the on-line capability. The PS2 has on-line capability, but you have to buy an extra accessary to do so. X-Box has more role-playing games than the PS2. PS2 has better games IMO. Get the PS2.

See I knew that is why the prices were coming down on the systems. DARN IT. By the time we get it and get all the games there will be a new one! LOL

I actually have a Gamecube. I bought it used for real cheap. A lot of the games are childish, but some are awesome. Metroid Prime was excellent. So was Zelda. I like the game-boy player that can be attached to the system so you can play the GBA games on your TV. It's like a SNES. The Metroid and Castlevania titles for the GBA are awesome.

I'm not sure you can draw an incompatibility conclusion just from the selection of chip manufacturer.

Also, from what I've heard, the next-generation playstation is planed to not even have any portable media (that is it will be all download/internet based -- no dvds).

XBOX has TopSpin which is a killer addictive Tennis Game - similar to the ever popular Virtua Tennis.

I didn't draw that conclusion. I saw programmers talk about it on G4TechTV. They said the "X-Box2 will NOT be able to play the current X-box games because a different company is involved with making the system." That's what they said. Are they right? I don't know. But they're on a video game channel saying it.

Brandon, i guess i never looked at the role-playing games for X-box. All i know is that Final Fantasy is exclusive to PS2. Along with the new Metal Gear. Also did you see the new Zelda, Metroid and Resident Evil for game cube.

I see.

Well, who knows. I don't know much about G4, but I liked TechTV before G4 purchased them. Didn't see anything official from MS about it though.

Yeah. That new Zelda looks really cool. The graphics look realistic. It's going to be awhile before it's out in stores.

MSIL all the way

The CPU for the Xbox 2 is rumoured to be designed to be a processor that can decode and execute instructions in Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) while at the same time being able to run x86 code, to remain compatible with Xbox 1.

Xbox 2, the real "home station?"

The Xbox 1 has underperformed in terms of projected sales. Forced to follow the price reductions of the Sony's and Nintendo's video game consoles, the Xbox price drop to $179 means that Microsoft is making at least $100 loss on each console sold. The plan is to subsidise this with increased software sales, but this calculation may only provide positive resuls in years to come, and perhaps only with Xbox 2. Not unlike Sony's drive to develop a "home station" that would function as the center of a home entertainment system, Microsoft plans to make the Xbox 2 the machine that will take over our living rooms, providing not only video game entertainment, but also online functions, and direct-to-disk digital TV recording. Microsoft has deep pockets and may venture on undeterred of the moderate success of Xbox 1, but it may take Xbox 2 or even Xbox 3 or 4 before Microsoft's plan for global domination of our living rooms becomes reality.

Ok I think I figured this out! Maybe we will get the PS2 now. And hold off on the dvd recorder and the X-box, until the X-box 2 comes out. Any solid dates on that or just projected for 2006?

First of all, if you can only get one system than I say get the PS2. Someone said MS isn't going anywhere? Well Sony isn't a 1st year company either. Sony owns about 60% of the market. I'll get the sales figures if you'd like but Sony has simply dethroned Nintendo and MS didn't make a huge splash like Sony did with the PS 1.

The main reason to get a PS2 is the library of games. Since Sony owns 60% of the market, who are the developers going to make games for? The PS2 of course.

I saw that someone said that you have to buy accessories for the PS2. That is true. BUT! MS isn't an angel either. You have to buy a modem for the PS2 for $45. But the Sony online service is FREE! With Xbox you get the modem free, but you have to pay like $50 a year for the online subscription.

Thanks for the advice guys! I like that the X box has a hard drive, that means no memory cards right? And the X-box is actually cheaper I think.

In the long run the Box is a tad bit more expensive. Also if the kid wants to take a saved game to a friends house, he'll have to take his entire xbox. So you'll have to buy mem cards regardless.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!
