Quarterback
Hello Hogs,
It's Vince from your F2F partner JagsZone. Congrats to Mr. Gibbs and the team on the MNF win. Great to see Joe back on the sidelines.
I wanted to stop over to ask you guys for some opinions/first impressions of Brunell. Tell me what you think. Is he the answer? Will he start this year? Should he start this year? Any Ramsey-believers out there?
Brunell was extremely popular here in Jacksonville, but after three losing seasons as a starter some were ready for him to go. Then there were of course tons and tons of fans that were violently opposed to his demotion last year. He was after all, our first and only QB to really speak of.
So here I am asking for your opinions of your new QB.
Let me know.
Good luck on the upcoming season.

Welcome Jungleview.
I think it's Brunell's job to lose. Brunell did just okay on Monday but Ramsey looked plain scared. I think he is still suffering from Spurriosis.
I think Brunell still has some juice left.
In the preseason, Gibbs won't show his hand offensively so whatever we are seeing now is not likely what we'll see in the regular season. Notwithstanding, both Brunell and Ramsey need to improve their games.
...I still think Brunell will be our QB against the Bucs.

I disagree with Justice Hog! I am a Ramsey supporter though, so that may be why! I saw Brunnel doing exactly what he did at camp, alot of passes were way off!
Though Patrick still has a little bit of the skidishness left I think he will prove over the next few weeks to be "the man"! I think he has less to overcome then Brunnel does.

For the record, I am a Ramsey supporter, too. I would rather see him get the job...especially because I think he has the stronger arm.
I just think Brunell has more pocket awareness and game sense than Ramsey does right now....which is why I think he'll get the nod.
We'll see.
I won't be upset no matter who gets the job....just as long as we're putting our best QB out there.

You are right about Brunell and his game sense. That is what I'm hoping Ramsey picks up from him in the next 3 games. It's less likely that Brunell will learn to throw like Patrick can!

I would fashion myself a Ramsey fan but I believe that Brunell will have the starter role until he plays himself out of it. It has little to do with his contract and more to do with Ramsey looking first at who might hit him and second for the open man. He needs to be de-programmed from Spurriers misguidings and then learn the correct way to QB in the NFL. That alone should have him on the sidelines for a portion of the season. I beleive Ramsey is the future but first he has to rid himself of the past (two seasons that is).

I think Brunell will start and finish the season, although I'm more than a little worried with Jansen hurt. Right tackle is important.
Other things (I mean blind-side protection) being equal, I think that Brunell is a better QB than Ramsey. That's based on watching Brunell against the league in past years, and on seeing Ramsey knocked around during the Spurrier experiment. Last night, Ramsey seemed a little dazed, or sluggish. Maybe he needs a year of sitting, and learning how to play QB in the NFL.
And, to be fair, I got home during the 2nd quarter, when Ramsey was playing, badly. I didn't see Brunell.

Brunell's game was always about mobility in Jacksonville. I guess there could be some concern about that now with his age and numerous surgeries. But then again, he basically had the year off in 2003 to rest up.
He can probably still be more than adequate for you, and maybe even mentor Ramsey a bit. Brunell should have another year or two left in him.
Looks like Gibbs had Brunell rolling out a bit, which should be playing to his strengths. The moment he has to be a pocket-quarterback, that's when his days are over.

I worked thru both Mark's and Ramsey's perfomances last night ..Hass was in the game by the time I got home but from what I've read hear and heard since the game neither player stood out. I'm not sure how long they played but I too believe it's Brunell's job to lose although JG will give P-Ram every chance to win it. whom ever is the starter we'll be in good hands and No 3 won't be no joke either

It's really too early in camp too tell. Both Ramsey and Brunell seem to be over throwing the receivers a bit. They are both learning a new system and Brunell is learning new receivers so the timing is not quite there. We should have a better picture by the end of the Falcons game. I am a personal fan of Ramsey as I have met him and respect him because of the way he is with the fans and more specifically the young fans. I have not met Brunell so I don't really have a personal opinion of him yet. That being said, I don't really care who wins. The coaching staff won't take that decision lightly and they will pick the best guy.

I totally agree with hogred, THE RAM will be our QB on sept.12, he still has 4 games plus practices to get ready for the season and by sept 12 he will understood Gibbs offense.
He´ll start Saturday against Carolina which had one of the best defenses in the NFL last year, I know he´ll perform a lot better than he did yesterday.
GO THE RAM and beat Brunell.

Brunell is clearly the better QB as we speak right now. He makes better discisions on the field that being said Rasmey has a ton of potential and need time to rid himself of some bad habits.

Brunell has good scrambling ability. Great command at the line. Yells so all of the fans can hear. BUT... he also throws to the fans. Misses the receivers completely. Just like what happens in Madden. It's so weird having a left hander on our team.
Obviously I have always favored Ramsey more but I also think it's Brunell's to lose.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I feel it's Ramsey's to lose. I think he is clearly the better QB at this stage of Brunells career. Ramsey is a bit rusty IMO, and also a bit insecure. I know Gibbs will play the better performing QB regardless of who makes the biggest paycheck.
Ramsey will get more confident, and his throws will zero in the more he practices. The only question in my mind is how long it will take. Brunell will likely start the season, but I feel it will only be because of Ramsey underacheiving which won't last long.
Ramsey is going to be special

I agree Scottskin. I am a huge Ramsey fan. I think that he just needs to feel more comfortable. I think that one game of him being scared and realizing that, you know what, Its ok. You'll survive. I think that he'll just have to prove himself. I think that Brunell will start and until he gets hurt or he keeps loosing then thats when Ramsey will start.

Ramsey didn't look good at all... and I would classify myself as a Ramsey supporter...
IMO Brunnell showed why Gibbs picked him on one play the other night... it was an audible... into a running play... he made the right decision... Brunnell checked off and Portis got an 8 yard carry... That is what Gibbs is looking for and that is the reason Brunnell will be our starter this year...

In fairness, Ramsey HAD to be concerned for HIS safety after seeing the starting RT go down, and then going in with the 2nd string (Was it the second-stringers?). I'm for Brunell, but, they need to get the man rolling left instead of right.Wingman wrote:He needs to be de-programmed from Spurriers misguidings and then learn the correct way to QB in the NFL. Thank you all for the spirited replies. It certainly looks like you guys could be on the verge of all-out QB controversy.
I agree with most on the board that Brunell will be the starter on opening day. But I would also expect that he'll get hurt or the fans will demand a change if he loses. In other words, I think Brunell will start the season and Ramsey will finish. Just my opinion.
I too feel that Ramsey has a chance to be something special and removing the Spurrier from him may take a while. Surrier was all about sending 5 WR's out and leavig nobody back to block. Hopefully JG will keep a few guys back to block for the QB!
PS - Poor ol' Brunell. Had to go through the QB controversy last year in Jax, and it looks like he's gonna go through it again!

Yeah, he kind of signed up for it though
I personally think you are correct in your assessment. Brunell will likely be the opening day starter and by week 9 or 10 Ramsey will be starting, IMHO.

I just dont see all the fuss over P-ram....maybe he
will fulfill his potential and maybe not. I think Brunell is far better than P-ram right now. Lets not
forget he sat on the bench last year and will need time to get adjusted. Did anyone see the rope he threw to gardner against Chump? I watched all the game and Brunell just made smart decisions. Heck he moved the ball against Denver's first string. A few overthrown balls this early is no sign for panick.

Bingo!!! Ramsey needs to be rebrain washed. This dude will not throw a ball away. He will try to make plays that have no potential and thats bad for an NFL starter.. I like Ramsey and wish him the best, but Brunell is a proven commodity in the NFL. Until 'P-Ram' proves diffrent thing will remain the same for now

Good News
I think there is some good news in the QB controversy and that is that it always seems that the backup QB was better than the starter. It is the Redskin way to have a QB controversy. Before my time it was Kilmer/Jurgeson. More in my time there was Schroeder/Williams, Williams/Rypien, Rypien/Humphries, Frerotte/Schuler, Frerotte/Green, Johnson/George, The first year of Spurrier it was anyone with a warm body. The only years I can remember where there was a totally clear cut starter were Theisman in the early 80's and Johnson circa 1999 (Tony Banks doesnt count). And I think the controversy is usually a good thing.
Who is the better QB? Its an easy question - the one on the bench!
