Great move. Safeties got too much money in FA. We have two young ones who need to learn behind a vet for at least 1 or 2 seasons. He's probably got just about that left in the tank.
story bro.

Hopefully our pass rush buys Ryan time. And Ryan buys us enough time to find a suitable successor.

The pass rush is key. I think the addition of Hatcher, a healthy Kerrigan, and Orakpo supposedly rushing more should help. I also think Chris Baker pushes the pocket more when he's in there which it looks like he will be more.

Good signing by the Skins. Good patience to let Clark test the FA market and feel the pressure of unemployment. I'm guessing we signed him for something much closer to our original offer than his.

Can someone refresh my memory? Why did we let Clark go the first time around?

Ryan Clark is a good pick up - bit of a shame though that we missed out on Carlos Rogers, he just signed with the Raiders

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Glad this is finally done. Obviously not a long term solution, but Clark wasn't bad last year. Also I was getting worried that the team was seriously banking on Philip Thomas to start this season.

Clark with prolly play FS though they say the roles are interchangeable here.

Gotcha. So Merriweather will be the SS?
I'd be happy as hell to see Philip Thomas win a starting job this summer. I'll be happy just to see him healthy in training camp! But the way Allen has been talking about him lately it was starting to sound like they were actually COUNTING on him.

Love Clark, slightly concerned about his legs though, his coverage ability is starting to suffer but still a great run stuffer and tackler.
I would not be surprised to see Meriweather play a mix of FS with him, our interchangeable approach helps here I guess.
Most of all I want to hear about Thomas and Rambo spending every waking hour studying him and his habits. If they really want to still be playing in the NFL earning money at the age of 34 then they should take note of his every move and hang off his every word!

I still say FS is our area of greatest need high in the draft this year (2nd or 3rd round), however having Clark makes it so they can at least take BPA from these possittion FS, SS, RT, OG, ILB, NT, and CB. Add WR if DJax is not signed.

It may be a need, but not sure I agree its our greatest need. I'd put RT, ILB and CB all above safety now. We just drafted two safeties last year. I don't really agree about WR either.
Redskins Mailbag on WashPost hit on both of those points today btw.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/foo ... the-draft/
Regarding Clark/Merriweather:
Beyond those two, Washington’s safety unit features a bunch of young, unproven players like Phillip Thomas, Bacarri Rambo, Jose Gumbs and Trenton Robinson. With two veterans in place, they can groom the young players properly rather than having to press them into duty prematurely. It’s probably the more affordable option, however, both in terms of the cap this year, and it also buys Washington some time with Thomas and Rambo rather than having to make a long-term commitment to someone like Mitchell while still trying to figure out what they have in those two second-year players.
On WR:
I don’t know that the acquisition of Jackson would entirely eliminate the need for a wide receiver. The team still could use a bigger target on the outside. Jackson isn’t that. But if they get the deal done, it gives them more flexibility. The best-player-available route certainly becomes more possible.

Re: RYAN CLARK IS A REDSKIN (Again!)
Clark buys time. FS is still a need, it's just not a DIRE need THIS off-season. We can put it off a bit, wait till the next draft/free agency to see who is available or coming out of college. Or, if the right person comes along we can draft them this year.

Clark is 34 years old, but has produced. That said, there is a reason the Steelers DECIDED not to resign him. I'm not against it, although I'd like to know the terms.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Re: RYAN CLARK IS A REDSKIN (Again!)
As someone said; Steelers let Clark go because he lost a step, last year none of the Skins safeties had a step, so this is an upgrade for our D no matter how you look at it!

There was no one else and yes Meriweather goes back to SS. I always thought he looked small in that position. He lasted most of the year as FS. I have to admit he plays the box much better. Now that he has had a little time to recover, I think we will see a much improved version. Knocking heads as a SS might take him right out again. Pros/Cons hard to decide.
