Porter is a solid DB. Hes not the best and far from the worst.
He is a risk reward type of DB. Sort of like Hall when Hall first arrived. Now Hall is far more polished and fundamental then when he first arrived.

I like this signing. At worst he could push Amerson to work harder to secure the 2nd corner spot. Heck Porter and Amerson may even fight Hall for the first spot. Either way on nickel situations they should be all on the field.

I like this signing as well. I didn't watch the Raiders much for obvious reasons. However, a lot of the posts I've read on other sites seem to indicate he was their best DB last year. The only concerns I saw were his tackling ability and sometimes playing too soft. We know that playing soft can be part of a contain strategy, so I give him a pass on that. Definitely a solid #3 with potential to be a #2. And only 27, so entering his prime. Quality cost effective signing.

From PFF regarding Porter...

RT @PFF Gave up a 90.7 QB rating in the slot last year, only marginally better than he was overall.

When he was playing against the slot receiver, the opposing QB had an average rating of 90.7.

Bill Polian ranks him above Aqib Talib, Revis, vantae Davis and a bunch of other CB's. Seems like this was a very good signing.

I really hope Bill is off his game because while he likes the addition of Poter (grade of B), Hatcher (A-), and the return of Orakpo (B) and Riley (B-), he reall didn't like anyone else that we signed or re-signed.

Here are his Cs (and C-):
> Geathers
> Hall
> Hayward
> Moss
> Roberts
> Sharpton

And here are his Ds:
> Baker
> Lauvao (he didn't even make his top 30 OG FA!)
> Jake Rogers (kicker - so I really don't care)

The Lauvao thing still gets me... why was this guy a first minute signing ? It look like he would have been out on the streets for a long time and if we really wanted him we could have gotten him in April for much less $. I haven't heard one person say anything other than he is at best OK. And may not be an up grade.

I've heard a lot bad about Porter too, but at least you can find some good on him.

Bill Polian needs his head examined if he thinks that Porter is better than those three. I like Porter, but lets not get ridiculous.

I don't think it was quite as strong an endorsement of Porter as chiefhog44 seems to be saying. Polian graded Revis an A, Porter and Talib both got Bs, and Davis got a B-. The grading isn't necessarily just about who is a "better" player either. He's taking their injury history into account. Talib and Davis have both missed a lot of games the past few years.

I'm pretty optimistic about Porter myself. At worst, it looks like we got a guy who can be the #2 corner (if Amerson can't win that job) and we didn't have to break the bank for him. Plenty of upside to go from that point.

I don't think the guys who got a "C" grade mean that they are bad players or that he doesn't like them. Here are his comments on D. Hall for example:

Hall is a solid all-around corner with good instincts. He struggles with strength on the press and has difficulty with transition.

"C" grades just seem to be that these aren't "elite" players. That seems fair to me looking at that list.
