Tom Landry?

You can't mean Laron, surely?!

It would be a good fit since he knows the defense already. Also he may be a lil banged up but he is playing well still.

I just don't get this logic. Year before last, D Hall got blasted for his tackling ability & not being able to play man to man.

He follows that year up with a great year playing basically in man (following the other team's #1 receiver and doing very well)...now we want to move him to Safety????

Free Safeties play in space...and must be great open field tacklers. So make your mind up people. Is D Hall good in space and a good open field tackler?? Or better in man to man?

Its only because we need a saftey and he said so himself that he wants to play saftey.
I am hoping Philip Thomas comes back and pans out. Maybe Rambo can improve?

If Hall wants to play CB then thats fine. If he wants to move to saftey and we still need one. Then thats fine with me too.

Its not really a swipe at Hall. Its because he said he wanted to move to safetey and the glaring holes on our defense that needs to be filled. Is the only reason why we brought it up.

I understand that. But, he's our best corner. So if we move him to safety, we open up another gap at Corner....and we aren't sure he's as good or better at safety. Maybe if we brought in a better corner it would make sense. But, to get worse at corner when we aren't sure that he's a good safety would to me be a bad move.

Remember when we had Laron Landry play Free Safety after Sean Taylor died? We did that out of necessity, but he's better in the box. Remember Adam Archuletta? Sometimes players skill sets fit one thing or the other and aren't as interchangeable as it might seem.

This is where I was coming from. As Countertrey said it could extend his career. I knew this already but I still can't understand how he could possibly do a better job at that than corner.

At the very least if he gets reps at it, then he is an emergency FS. I hope that DG continues to work with him on becoming an even better corner. He impressed this last season.

Wrong as usual. Laron Landry played Free when ST got killed.

After Taylor died, they had to move rookie LaRon Landry to free safety; he's better at strong but could get away playing free.

He played Free Safety and even had an interception at the position against Seattle in the playoffs that year, until eventually getting exposed and being moved back into the box the following year. Do your homework.

Perfect! As usual, you think you know more than you do, and then refuse to acknowledge it when corrected, yet still manage to be condescending. Yes, Laron did play some FS after Sean was killed, and had two INTs against Seattle at the position, but it was Reed who replaced Sean, both before and after his death.

Let's hear it from Reed:
On Monday Night Live at Velocity 5 on the eve of the 5-year anniversary of Taylor's death, I sat down with the man that replaced him both before his death and then after. Veteran safety Reed Doughty started for Taylor after his injury, at the free position and then had the unenviable task of trying to fill some large, empty shoes down the stretch of the 2007 season.
"He really was irreplaceable. I came in and started two games before his passing because of the knee injury. He was so positive with me. I got to know Sean really well the 2nd year. He's down, I remember we're getting ready to go to Tampa, and he's like man 'you're going to do good things this game' & 'you're going to have a great game' and 'you can do things that I can't do.' I was like Sean, did you just hear what you just said? He said everybody has different strengths and weaknesses. He was so modest about his own abilities. For him to tell me that, as a 2nd year player ...that meant a lot to me, to know that he believed in me. It wasn't just like "Man, I gotta get back quick, so that we have a chance."

Doughty continued, "His passing makes you realize how much you love football, but how small it is sometimes. That was a very emotionally, difficult time. Through my faith, and family and friends, supporting me -- I was able to go out there and try to honor his memory, and also help our team win a football game, and not try to take his place because that wasn't possible -- but to play my role, within the team to go on that playoff run. I hope people look at that and at least respect what we did that year, and what I was able to do within the team."

http://redskins.espn980.com/bloggers/ch ... ks-griffin

Or maybe you prefer something more from that time frame?

Reed Doughty has no idea how to replace a teammate who died in the middle of the season. How to feel. What to think. Or even how to go about his game-day duties today amid the mourning and sorrow for Sean Taylor at FedEx Field.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]
"There's not really any choices," the starting free safety of the Washington Redskins said. "This is my job."

Doughty walked off the team's practice field in Ashburn last week still reeling from the news that Taylor, shot during a targeted attempt to burglarize his Florida home early Monday morning, had died early Tuesday. Now the Redskins must face the Buffalo Bills a day before Taylor's funeral in Miami, which the whole team will attend.

He and his teammates are mourning, but only Doughty must deal with an awkward opportunity -- to start in place of a player who was killed less than a week ago.

I await your apology because you said that Laron Landry didn't play free safety after Sean Taylor was killed. You were proven wrong and admitted it. I never said that Reed Doughty didn't play any free safety. In fact, I said that he moved back into the box.

Gregg Williams always bragged that his safeties were interchangeable. So, I will let you get back to the Football 101 thread and scouring the internets trying to refute a point that wasn't made. =D> =D>

Immediately after Sean Taylor was killed, the Redskins moved Laron Landry to Free Safety to take advantage of his 4.4 speed and hitting ability to keep continuity in the scheme. The article you're referring to is the substitution of Reed Doughty at Free Safety when Taylor got hurt in the Green Bay game. If you remember, he got TORCHED because of the very point I'm making, he's slow and is not playing his natural position. But, IN GAME, you don't make that kind of adjustment. The Skins had a bye week, Taylor gets killed, we played Chicago and opened up with NO FREE SAFETY...thereafter, during the playoff run, Landry played FREE SAFETY.

The following season, he started at Free Safety and played there for part of the following year, but they moved him back down in the box because he's better there. What part of this is not plain English? Your statement was that Laron Landry never replaced Taylor at the FREE---a factually innacurate comment. The rest of this is just blather.

With Taylor at free and Landry at strong, the Redskins envisioned having the league's top safety tandem for a decade. After Taylor's death, Landry moved to free safety, the position he has played the last two seasons.

Landry has not developed as quickly as some in the organization expected. He struggled at times in coverage last season, especially against double moves. In Washington's 33-30 overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 13, the Saints specifically targeted Landry with double moves.

He was burned for 40- and 53-yard touchdown passes - the Saints tied the score at 30-30 with 1 minute, 19 seconds left in regulation. Some Redskins observers believe Landry is better suited to play strong, the position for which he was drafted. Landry, however, also struggled at times playing in the box, team sources said, and more will be asked of the safeties in the Redskins' new defensive scheme.

Wrong again. We played Buffalo, and Reed played FS. We did open the game with no one in Sean's spot, though. So at least you got that right.

Quit while you're behind. It's getting embarrassing. Landry played the Free Safety after ST was murdered. You said he didn't. You were wrong. He was there for over a year--not Reed Doughty. WTH dude. Just eat your crow and move on.

The bottom line is that you can't just plug a guy in at Free Safety if their skills don't fit the position...including D Hall.

I doubt we'll need Hall at FS because it's in the Skins best interest to acquire Byrd via FA. Keep Rambo as a backup and continue to develop him. I'd much rather have Hall stay at CB for the time being, he arguably had the best year of his career.

+1

And, just like Laron Landry didn't fit at Free Safety (as anyone who watches the Redskins & Knows football knows he played when we lost ST) couldn't do it, there's no guarantee that Hall would even be a good fit at Free Safety. Keep him at Corner--he's the best one we have. I also agree that Jairus Byrd should be on the free agent radar.

Too funny. You really should do a little checking before sticking to such an untenable position. LL didn't move to FS (and Reed to SS) until the Giants game (the third game after ST's murder). God, a simple search of this message board would have sufficed. Here's three threads I came up with in about 20 seconds that show you are obviously incorrect on this subject:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25595

—Redskins FS Reed Doughty vs. Bears QB Rex Grossman: After Sean Taylor went down on Nov. 4 against Philadelphia and Pierson Prioleau faltered, Doughty got his first start at Dallas and struggled. He played better at Tampa Bay but was burned for two critical catches in the fourth quarter against the Bills.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25636

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25675

Doughty started at FS in both the Bills' game and the Bears' game following ST's murder.
