Jay Gruden Hired as Redskins New Head Coach

Post by Burgundy&Wha? »

NFL Network is reporting that the Redskins have reached an agreement with Jay Gruden to be their next Head Coach.

Alright, good hire. Let's look forward to good things.

Quick on the draw guys. Schefter also reporting the hire on Mike & Mike. Let the new era of Redskins football be successful. Suggestion to Jay, get rid of Haslett.

I kind of doubt Zimmer would leave Cincinnati for the same job here, and even if he would be willing to do that for some reason, why would the Bengals allow that?

I wonder just how much impact Shanny had on Haslett's D. It's been suggested that Danny Smith left because of Shanny's holding back on his portion of the team. Could Haz coach a top 10 D here without any interference? That's a BIG question.

I posted this in the other dupe thread:

Nice. Now what I really want to see is a buh-bye to Haz and promote Raheem Morris to DC.

You may be right that Haz could do better with a little more control, maybe the possiblity of going back to the 4-3. I just personally think fans aren't going to have much patience with him at this point, and it might be better to move on. Does anybody doubt that all we will hear next year is, "Why is Haslett still here?" anytime the Skins lose a game?

Welcome to Washington Jay.

Now, can I just have a word with you about this Haslett fellow......

(Rumours abound that Haslett and Morris are both going to be retained, whilst McVay gets the OC job - I could provide links, but just log in to Twitter, lol)

Aww yeah.

Not to brag too much. I think if you look back on this between the Bruce Allen connection and Dan Snyder loving Jay's last name, you can see why this was such an obvious choice.

I am 100% on board with Jay Gruden, but Adam Schefter is reporting the Skins are expected to retain McVay as OC and maybe Morris as DC.

That would be a huge buzz kill.

Hiring a first time NFL head coach and keeping remnants of a failed staff isn't a mix I like.

Nice thorough process that involved a lot of names and seems (I said SEEMS!) to have been measured and methodical. Quite frankly, if Gruden was their top candidate all along, I like the process they went through even more than if they only arrived at that pick once they sat down with him. In either event, I know it will be blasted as "same old same old" by some and "obvious sign of change" by others.

Link to Jon Keim/Adam Shefter article (by the way, Keim is the only person I listen to when comes to Redskins' news)
I am happy b/c:
-He made Andy Dalton look like a legit pro. RGIII is better than Andy Dalton
-He prefers a more pro-style offense, can't wait to see griffin in it
-McVay goes to OC and from everything I've heard about him, that is a good thing
-Sounds like both Raheem and Haslett stay. If Haslett was hamstrung by Mike, then defense should improve this year, if not, then hopefully Has goes and Raheem takes over. Gruden has history with both
-For those upset about the DC situation, recognize that complete overhaul of a team one year removed from nfc east crown might actually be a good thing. Continuity and all.
-The decision took a while, but not too long, so we can move on from speculation and get to the business of moving forward, quickly.
I know he got a pretty good zip on the ball. He has a quick release. . . once I seen a coupla' throws, I was just like 'Yeah, he's that dude.'"

Ah. As long as Gruden is able to put together the staff he wants not guys that are being forced on him for some reason, I don't think that "remnants of a failed staff" holds much water. A good coach is a good coach. Danny Smith was retained here for three different HCs because he's a "good coach".

I hope the Skins can get it done with Jay Gruden. I am frankly less hopeful each Snyder makes a coaching change given the number of coaches he has gone through but maybe Gruden will be able to "manage" Snyder better, at least I want to nurture my faint hopes it will work out this time.

I would prefer they cut bait and move on from Haslett, why would Morris want to stay in the same position when his contract is up next month, would a raise be enough? I actually think Morris would get along better and be overall a better teacher and coach to the defense. Face it Haslett sucks, he sucked in New Orleans, and in St. Louis and has sucked here, I see no legitimate reason to keep him as DC period.

I don't have to like the HC hire and I don't have to like which coordinators are kept around or hired but I must hope it all works out.

Welcome to the DMV HC Jay Gruden!

Man, regardless who was hired all we can really do is hope. And frankly we need more than just for Gruden to be a good coach. I'd say its even more important that we see RGIII bounce back next year.

Clayton posted a good stat about the success of these coordinators moving on to HC jobs today:
Go back to 2009. Ryan, Steve Spagnuolo, Jim Caldwell, Josh McDaniels, Todd Haley, Jim Schwartz and Raheem Morris advanced from coordinators to head coaches. Only Ryan and Schwartz lasted more than three years.

2 out of 7. None of those guys were working for Dan Snyder either! :)

Next year? Isn't almost everyone already asking that right now? Most were shocked when he wasn't let go with the rest of Shanahan's staff.
