Who the head coach is is not as important as having a good group - HC, OC, STC and DC that work well together ...

don't get me wrong - having a good HC is important but I'm sure the FO and Bruce will end up with 2 or 3 pretty solid guys

the key is having all these guys be on the same page about what they want to do and how to get the players playing at their best and with an attitude

we have not looked like a very motivated team for a long while

and of course they have to learn how to 'manage' Snyder because he is going to be 'elephant in the room' at all times

he is not going to stop trying to be a part of it all
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with 'over paying' if you get the guy you want ...

there is nothing wrong with the next HC getting more money than he 'deserves' - that is what agents are for

that's as silly as thinking that we 'paid too much' for RG3 - there is no such thing, when you are getting what you need in order to have a successful team

if Jay Gruden is the top guy, pay the man - he's gone if he does not deliver and he's a 'steal' if he does what you want him to

IMHO, the HC is everything. He's manages the football operations. If he's a failure, everything below him will fail. It's the same issue we have with Snyder. He sets the tone, up top... If that's steeped in failure, everything below will fail. Hence our predicament.

I agree. Without getting the right head coach, nothing else will fall into place. It doesn't guarantee everything, because that coach still has to get the right staff in place, and lead everybody in the same direction. But without that critical first move of putting the right man at the top, it probably doesn't matter if you put a stellar coaching staff in place to support him, because they won't all be pulling in the same direction.

I hope that they don't want Gruden because it'll be cheaper to retain the remaining coaches and their salaries. Snyder is on the hook for Mike and whomever else. But if they all go, he's gotta hire an entire staff and pay the rest? LOL

you both mis understood - if the FO comes up with 3 finalists and none are any good then it does not matter

I have a little more faith than you guys - I think this FO will identify 2 or 3 good guys as HC

HOWEVER that HC will not be worth anything if the crew under him is not able to carry out his 'superior' thinking and plan for success

maybe it's just me but I think the guy they pick will be a good HC but his only chance at doing well here will depend on his putting together a great bunch of assistants and finding a way to 'manage' things while Dan is trying to be a part of everything

I think they need to go under the radar and outside the box perhaps to hire the next coach and then let them surround themselves with the best supporting cast possible. I think Gruden would be good but don't you think the comparisons to him and Jon would eventually become a distraction?.

while I have no real favorite - I do think that the key is to get a real good leader as HC and a bunch of very good assistants

they key is to get the players to play together and to practice and play with intensity

the FO will find a way to get the product on the field to be consistently better or Dan will rip everything apart in pretty short order

I do think that Jay Gruden would be a good hire but I still think it's almost as important to bring in some great guys as OC, DC and STC

If Redskins do interview Danny Smith, that means Gruden deal didn't work out and I'd make Smith the frontrunner. And, he'd do a good job.

Thoughts?

Would definitely be a "thinking outside the box" move. I generally have a favorable impression of Danny Smith and his ability to motivate players. My question about him would be does he already have a plan for what he would do as a head coach, would he have quality guys who want to come work with him, is he organized and able to manage all of these coaches?

I think this group that Bruce has working with him on this HC 'search' will want answers to any and all matters pertaining to being the HC

with all of their futures also riding on this selection, we will see a HC that is able to give this FO a lot of reassurances about all the issues that face the Redskins

I have no doubt that these guys will find a good HC and help him put a good staff together - the only concern is Dan Snyder

It's almost comical how many coaches they have interviewed. Rapidly approaching twice as many as Tiny has hired and fired. Wow!

Pretty good stuff here. Good read on this.

When a coordinator flounders after promotion, it is often due to a lack of strong coaching on the opposite side of the ball.

I don't want anyone that has ties to the coaching staff here. Danny is the exception because has that "dont give a f***" attitude.

Why not? What has he done that's been so terrible since being here? He, like Haz has been given garbage to work with. No true NT which is key for the 3-4 defense. He hasn't been given any safeties to work with. And he's coached Amerson up really well.

Probably not a bad choice on Smith. Personally I wouldn't mind Rich Bisaccia. Long shot I know.

I don't believe there is a "top candidate". Won't believe who is to be HC until he's announced.

Hard to remember when the Post had so many conflicting sports stories based on "insiders" and other anonymous sources. Maybe I'll just make things up, post, and watch somebody repeat the post until it's A Real Story. Baseball example: somebody's blog recently wrote that the Nats' AA CF, Brian Goodwin, was another potential superstar, meant to be right alongside Bryce Harper and on and on. Goodwin hit about .252 at Harrisburg, but he's a potential superstar. All he has to do is learn to hit. No kidding. (For example: Harry Theofilides was a potential superstar...he just had to learn to pass like Sonny Jurgensen).

Just write anything, get someone to link to it, and, bam, it's true.

I've read that Gruden is more interested in taking the Titans job. He plans to interview with the Vikings today, so I don't see how he could have accepted the job here and not announce it.

Looks like a deal is in the works. I'm very luke warm about him. I really think Wisenhunt is going to be special and would love to have him here. Oh well, I've been wrong before.

I wouldn't worry too much - there are a number of very good young guys out there and this FO hopefully understands some of the issues we have and who might best fit

the key is to make sure whomever is here as HC can get a good group of assistants to work with ...

I'm glad that they're looking at a lot of candidates but I think the sooner we can start to put a team together the more guys we'll have to select from

most all the candidates seem to bring a lot of intensity and this guy will push RG3, big time

lol. I don't know why so many people overreacted to that "Gruden prefers the Titans" horses***. Rich Tandler summed it up pretty well today:

When the coaching carousel is turning, it’s also lying season.

I hit on this a bit yesterday when discussing Mark Maske’s report that Jay Gruden might prefer to work for the Titans rather than the Redskins. Many fans took this tidbit to be the gospel truth and started complaining about getting into a bidding war and wondering why the Redskins would want a coach who would rather be somewhere else.

But tap brakes here a bit. Where did this “information” come from? It had to come from Gruden’s camp, right? I mean, is he going to tell the Redskins that he’s rather be in Tennessee and, even if he does say that, why would the Redskins push that out to the media?

It’s the oldest trick in the book and it’s been around for so long because it works. It looks like Gruden has two teams that want him. The Titans know they are up against Daniel Snyder, who has some of the deepest pockets in the league and a willingness to empty them out to get what he wants. And the Redskins have now heard that Gruden might prefer Tennessee. Each team had better come forward with its best offer.

Now, the Redskins know every trick in the book themselves. They know that this is “information” coming from the Gruden camp. But Gruden might actually rather be in Nashville than in Ashburn so they can ignore the leak at their own peril.

The lesson for fans is to not hang to and react (or overreact) to every report that comes out. There is a good chance that your blood pressure is going up over something that is not true in the first place.
