Counter Trey

Post by JansenFan »

My Dad and I were talking, and I thought I noticed something last night and he noticed too. It appeared to us that Coach Gibbs has already shown his first adjustment. In the glory days, the Guard and Tackle would pull for the Counter Trey. Last night, it appeared that the Tackle stayed put to account for the backside defender and the Guard pulled and the H back became the lead blocker.

Are we crazy? Did anyone else notice that?

I noticed that also though a few times the back would bounce outside instead of following the H-Back thru the hole, but it did seem to work with the tackle staying at home . I'm sure we will see both versions of the counter as the season moves along.

John Madden was using the telestrater and must have been going off memory because on the play he curcled the takle and the guard to pull but only the guard pulled he covered by saying Joe Gibbs will pull two from the off side in this case he used a H-Back

Each time I saw this version it went for Positive yards

I think its a good adjusment for todays NFL. The DEs are so quick and fast that if you pull the tackle the DE can catch up to the RB for a loss.

That was the one problem when they played the Giants. Lawrence Taylor was fast enough to catch the RB from behind. Unless they turned and ran right over him...the one play when Taylor couldn't come close to handling Joe Jacoby. Not many other guys were as fast as LT, though.

So, good adjustment. Gibbs thinks out all the details.

Yes, They also ran the classic counter trey as well. About two plays after they ran the counter trey with the H-Back blocking, I saw them run it again with the guard and tackle pulling.

IM almost positive Gibbs ran that variation of the counter trey at very end of his first tenure...Teams were getting faster in the early nineties--COWBOYS/49ERS...I think that adjustment was made back then.........im going to check my old VHS tapEs to verify......
