My own observations:

Post by JPFair »

Just a fans perspective:

1- Our offense needs more work than we think. Brunell was rusty and unprepared. He overthrew many of his passes, and rarely looked impressive. Ramsey still shows the effects of being in Spurriers system. It seems like he was feeling a blitz when it really wasn't there. He audibled too much, which is another sign of Spurrieritis. And, as he did so many times last year, he held on to the ball way to long.

2- Jon Jansens loss will be enormous, and will most certainly be exploited by Bill Parcels.

3- Our defensive line, while not overly impressive, at least played with more fire and determination than last year.

4- Our secondary needs a little tweaking. Sean Taylor, in my eyes, looked o.k. His first interception was handed to him on a silver platter, but his second was a little more attributed to his skills.

5- Ade Jimoh is quite possibly the worst player to ever put on a Redskins Uniform. He is a major liability, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut in the next couple of days.

6- Kevin Mitchell could start for any other team in the league.

7- Our linebackers this year are going to be awesome. LaVar needs to up his game a bit, or he's going to be the second best LB on our team. Marcus Washington is going to turn some heads this year.

8- Notwithstanding the overthrown passes, the short yardage gains, and the dropped passes, Joe Gibbs continues to be one of the greatest play callers in the game. His play selection, irregardless of yardgage gained, was outstanding. His play selection in the final drive is evidence that it was the only part of the game that he really wanted to put points on the board.

9- Tom Tupa is going to give us a good punting game.

10- Our tackling was not great, and needs to be improved. We tried too many times to tackle above the waist.

11- The decision to have Ola Kimrin kick the field goal in the last few seconds was one of the most logical and classiest things I've seen this year.

12- Joe Gibbs looked awesome in that cap with the R on it.

All in all I think we have a lot of work to do if this thing is going to be turned around. Having said that, Joe Gibbs knows exactly what he's doing and the game he played yesterday is nowhere near what we're going to play like starting September 12th.
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!

Talk about dropping passes...Denver receivers must have dropped at least a dozen passes. I for one dont think that Sean Taylors first interception was handed to him. He had to totally turn around his body and because he had good position on the receiver he made the play. There are very few freebies in the NFL.

exactly...just because taylor was in perfect position to make the play it was a gimmie? no, that's just a guy with awesome skill making it look easy...

I would differ in one regard. I thought early in the game, the defensive line got good pressure on the quarterback. Sometimes, that pressure was manufactured through blitzes, and other times, it was from the front four. I saw an interview with Lavar after the game, where he said that they didn't show anything. If that is in fact true, the Greg Williams has some good things planned. I did see them blitz more that I expected.

One thing you can guarantee them working on this week will be the bootleg. They had to have run that play at least eight times, often successfully.

Now the second team defense is another thing altogether. They looked pretty pathetic, and I agree their tackling was atrocious. All of this gives the coaches something to harp on, while still coming away with the win.

Finally, what is going on with Ohalete? He just looks lost out there now.

I don't know about "handed to him." It amazed me because he was still able to catch the ball after looking at it so late. I liked it. The second one was sweet. He still has more TD's than Winslow this year.

Yeah, I don't know why Gibbs has kept him at all this year.

As I've been saying for years. K-Mitch could start for us and ANY other team.

You thought last night was nice, just wait until Barrow comes back! :celebrate:

And a good fake punting game. I can see Iffy catching a few more fakes this year.

And against his old team, too.

I couldn't have said it better! Seeing Gibbs on the sideline is a sight for sore eyes.

While our tackling wasn't the greatest, the one thing that really impressed me was the amount of white jersey's that swarmed to the ball once the first tackle was made. You can tell the overall effort is much higher already.

I honestly didn't expect to see much more than Gibbs threw out there last night. I was definitely impressed by our LB's... Mitchell included. I'm really bummed by the loss of Jansen. Not that we can find anyone to replace him but we have the best coach to handle his loss. He'll get them prepared.

Ramsey needs to step it up. Brunnel had a leg up on him last night. Hasselback definitely looked the best, albeit with the scrubs.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

You can judge nothing about the offense in terms of schemes and play-calling based on what you saw last night. This is NOT the offense you will see on Sept. 12. Only fundamentals and mechanics can be judged in pre-season.

Trust me, we ain't seen nothin' yet.

2- Jon Jansens loss will be enormous, and will most certainly be exploited by Bill Parcels.
Sure, if Parcells had L.T. or Strahan. But he don't.

4- Our secondary needs a little tweaking.

Yeah, like cutting Jimoh and putting Taylor on first string now.

6- Kevin Mitchell could start for any other team in the league.

The heads he is going to turn are the ones on the opposing RBs' bodies.

You must like vanilla. Gibbs barely went past Page 3 of the playbook last night. Counter-trey and 40/50 Gut all night.

My Gibbs Education from the first time around is to totally ignore play-calling and strategy approach in pre-season.

He's got one date in mind -- Sept. 12. Tampa Bay need not bother to game-plan off any of these preseason game films.

12- Joe Gibbs looked awesome in that cap with the R on it.

Except it was the wrong color. Get this black outta here! Black is not, has not been and never will be a Redskins color. Arrgh.

I hope you are right, because I didn't think they played well at all, particularly the outside backers. I don't believe LaVar had one tackle. There was some HUGH holes going off tackle several plays in a row. Also, Denver misdirected all night long on bootlegs. We never adjusted. I may be mistaken, but on a 4-3 the outside linebacker has contain. Why was the QB allowed to get outside of contain repeatedly. Where were they on forcing those bootlegs? If you look, they bit on the misdirection every time. Staying home on contain is something every football player is schooled on beginning at 60 pound ball. we've got a lot of work to do.
