Brunell vs. Ramsey
Drops seemed to be contagious during practice Wednesday, causing all four quarterbacks to look subpar. The Redskins' top two signal callers had an especially hard time shining in the heat, mostly because of the play of their receivers, both with drops and with misreads. Mark Brunell had a nice touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles while the team was running its red-zone offense. But Patrick Ramsey came right back with nearly the same play to Dameane Douglas, again in the end zone. Both were during offense-on-offense drills.
Ramsey had another notable throw, when he slipped a pass through three defenders to running back Chad Morton. Near the end of practice, safety Matt Bowen picked off a pass from Brunell. Despite the minor miscue, cornerback Fred Smoot praised Brunell after the session for being a quarterback that doesn't make mistakes, something he said Coach Joe Gibbs values highly.
Quotable
"I love him. You know he's got some Mississippi roots, too. I'm just looking forward to him touoching the ball about 300 times."
-- Cornerback Fred Smoot on new running back Clinton Portis
Fresh Faces: Ola Kimrin
Position: Place kicker.
College: University of Texas-El Paso.
Who He Is: Kimrin, who is originally from Malmo, Sweden, started out playing soccer in his native country but turned to football after an injury. After coming to the United States to attend UTEP, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Kimrin walked on to the football team as a kicker. He signed with the Redskins as a free agent this year.
How He's Doing: The 32-year-old said he had his first real session during Wednesday's practice, when he appreciated the high temperatures: "It makes the ball travel a little farther, so it's good for us. . . . [The other players are] not happy at all. I kind of feel sorry for them."
Chances of Making the Roster: The Redskins expect eight-year veteran John Hall to be kicker this season, so Kimrin likely won't make it beyond training camp. If he weren't at camp with the Redskins, Kimrin said he'd be back in Sweden laying out cable networks for computers with his father.
The Daily Gibbs Watch
Despite the heat and humidity, Coach Joe Gibbs remained calm and collected throughout yesterday's practice -- but forced the team to face one of its longest sessions of training camp so far. During the two-hour practice, following last night's later session, Gibbs called out a few players on some misread or misplayed situations, including running back Sultan McCullough after a pass was thrown to his back because he was facing the wrong direction. Gibbs spent more time with all four quarterbacks than he has during other sessions of camp, overseeing their drills for the middle part of practice. Once again, Gibbs used a headset for much of the nine-on-nine and 11-on-11 drills, but near the end of the session, he removed it.
Odds and Ends
Wide receiver Darnerien McCants, left, had a bad day all around. He missedat least four passes, including two straight at one point. McCants also had to receive aid after he overheated while running after practice. Ade Jimoh, Rashad Bauman and Jafar Williams also needed medical attention because of the heat during the midday practice.
Tight end Robert Royal and linebacker Billy Strother got into a shoving match for about a minute during drills. Both blamed the aggression on basic competitiveness.
Wide receiver Gari Scott made cornerback Fred Smoot look silly in one drill, blowing past him to catch a pass from Mark Brunell.
Garnell Wilds, a cornerback noted more for his long dreadlocks than his play during training camp, made a nice interception on a throw from Tim Hasselbeck intended for rookie John Standeford.
Early in practice, part of the team participated in a drill that involved throwing and catching a couple of volleyballs.
