Noble Suffers Another Setback, Breaks Right Hand

Defensive lineman Brandon Noble, whose surprisingly successful rehabilitation after major knee surgery was the talk of training camp, suffered a broken right hand on Wednesday.

Noble broke the third metacarpal and is expected to miss four days of practice, team trainer Bubba Tyer said. His status for the preseason opener is uncertain.

Gregg Williams, assistant head coach -- defense, said it is possible Noble would take part in Monday's exhibition opener, but he was unable to practice today.

"We're going to take it day by day," Williams said. "We're going to hold him of a few days. If it calms down, we'll play him on Monday night. But if it doesn't, we're not in any stress on trying to get him in the ballgame on Monday. We've got five preseason games, he's still got four left, three left, two left. He's played enough ballgames. I just want him to get healed."

Noble surprised the coaching staff by being able to participate in mini camp and training camp after tearing knee ligaments in an exhibition game last August and was earning rave reviews from players and coaches for his progress. But Noble broke his hand during Tuesday nights training session, although the extent of the injury was not known at the time and he finished the session despite the discomfort. The Redskins had been limiting the tackle to one session a day, holding him back on days with morning and afternoon sessions planned. More details of Noble's injury should be forthcoming with director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer scheduled to give a medical update to the media later this afternoon.
