1983/84 vs 1991/92

To this day, I think that the 1983/84 Redskins were one of the top five teams ever. The way in which they decisively won their games during the regular season set them apart from the rest of the league. They set a then record of 541 points, and lost only two games by a grand total of 2 points. Although they lost the Super Bowl that year, I don't see any Redskins team, Super Bowl winners included, that could match the 1983 Redskins.

That's a really good question, but I voted for the '91 team. As great as the '83 team was, they got dismantled in the Super Bowl. The '91 team also crushed alot of teams. And that playoff run made their opponents look like...well, last years Redskins.

Great offensive lines on both teams. Great defensive lines, but I'll give the edge to '83 because of Butz. Great QB play on both teams. Byner had a great year in '91, but Riggo was Riggo. I think the '91 WR crew was better. Secondary was close, but I think Darrell Green in '91 was better than Darrell Green in '83. Mark Murphy was everywhere, but in '91, so was Brad Edwards. I think the difference was made at linebacker and on special teams. The seasons enjoyed by Wilber Marshall, Kurt Gouveia and Brain Mitchell were phenominal. Moseley had a great regular season, but came back to earth in the playoffs. Lohmiller was steady all year.

Just my opinion, but either way, wouldn't be great to have this discussion in a year or two, and feel the need to throw the current team into this debate?

I voted '91 because we really should have gone undefeated that season. I have always felt that if Joe had brought Ricky Ervins into the Dallas game (week 12) right after the half, we would have won that game, and being undefeated entering the final game of the season Vs. Philly we would have tried to win that one too, rather than resting people for the playoff run when we had already clinched home-field advantage. I will always have great memories of the '83 team as well, though. The regular season comeback against the Raiders that year was the best I have ever witnessed. We were done in by the big play in the SB that year, but it was still a great season. I just have to go with '91 since we won it all.

I would have to say the 83/84 'skins, just becuase of number 44, Neal Olkewicz, and Joe Bugel. In 1983 the most famous play in Redskins history occuried in that superbowl. (4th and 1, handoff to Riggins who ran it 43 yards for a TD). Also that same season was one of the Redskins most famous games when we beat Dallas in the NFC championship. Although I was not even born yet, I was watched old tapes of these games, and my Dad has told me all about them, and I get a sense that this Superbowl and team ment more to the team, history of the francise, the fans, and the city. And you can bring up stats, and say who was better at what time, and the fact that we lost the superbowl that year, but from talking to people, reading books and articles, research and watching old tape, I get the idea that it was simply a more fun and special time in Washington in 83/84.

You are off by a year R12287, you are thinking of the 82/83 squad.

While the 91 team was great I had to give the edge to 83. That team just dominated on offense and defence. If it hadn't been for the SB loss they would be considered one of the best teams ever.

The 91 team was clearly better. Ill grant that the offense was better in 83 - but not by that much. The defense was a whole lot better in 91. I forget the exact numbers but 91 gave up something like 14 points per game - the 83 team gave up something like 21 (remember the Packers putting up a gazillion million points, the raiders putting up 35 cowboys 31 etc.) - 83 just didn't have a dominant defense. The 91 team had alot more depth too on both sides of the ball.

91 - 485 points scored, 224 given up, +261

That's not a small differential. Defense was much better in '91.

Some good arguments either side, both teams were brilliant, but I'd also go for the 83/84 team. Although I couldn't see most of the games, being in the UK, I just felt that the 83/84 team were going to win guaranteed, not quite so certain for 91. That 83/84 offense was just unstoppable.

I have to go with the 91 team. They came out of the block 11-0 and just dominated to whole season. Also people love to point out the fact that we won SB's during strike years (to me it's a tribute to Gibb's coaching ability) There was no strike in 91 so it's a easy pick for me.

I still say 83/84 team. The 2 games we lost that season were by only one point each.
