Ashburn, VA-- Former Redskins linebacker Kurt Gouveia was at Redskins Park for Sunday's practice, wearing coach's garb and working with the linebackers during defensive positional drills.
Gouveia was greeted by fellow BYU alum and ex-Redskin Trevor Matich (now a TV broadcaster) as he worked with the linebackers on tackling form, and he appeared to be enjoying his work.
The Redskins have not announced Gouveia's hiring, and it is not known at this time whether he will become a fixture on the defensive coaching roster, or if he is working with the team on a temporary basis.
Gouveia won two Super Bowl Championships playing for Coach Joe Gibbs with the Washington Redskins in 1988 and 1992. In the 1992 game he returned an interception to the two-yard line to set up a Redskin touchdown.
Gouveia had a 15-year NFL career with the Washington Redskins, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Diego Chargers. In 1993, he led the Redskins team with 174 tackles and in 1995, he led the Eagles with 144 tackles. He last played for the Redskins in 1999, when he was signed to improve depth and bring a veteran presence to one of the league's youngest and most inexperienced linebacking corps.
Gouveia most recently played for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the now-defunct XFL in 2000, where he once returned a fumble 100 yards for a touchdown. A native of Hawai'i, he was inducted into the Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. This past April, Gouveia had joined the University of Hawai'i's coaching staff as a graduate assistant. He had previously served on their staff as a student assistant in 2002.

Gouveia: great addition to Skins, in whatever capacity. The last old-time Petibon/Pardee/Allen style linebacker, meaning a player who plays so smart and tough that he plays far above his physical talents.
Others were faster and bigger than Gouveia, but he was more often in the right place to make the play.
