Unfortunately, I agree. Some people praise the OL and we must have watched different games yesterday.

it's a problem across the league. what's the biggest difference between the NFL now and just a few years ago? teams don't even tackle anymore in practice.

players that retired just 6-7 years ago if they went to watch training camp today, they would see that one of the 3 fundamentals of the sport (blocking, tackling, and running) is no longer even practiced. no more tackling.

I don't even blame the players. how can they not be bad at it? they're not even allowed to practice it.

I agree with several posts thusfar. My takeaway from last evening...

1. While RGIII looked a bit mortal last evening, many of the problems were on the Oline.....although a couple of times when he tried to evade the rush, he was not successful and seemed to me as if he thought his speed would allow him to escape. Also, curious where Cooley says that the offense will look like what the second string is doing with Cousins vice what RGIII is being allowed to do. Not a great night, but not a total throw away either as if nothing else, RGIII got to see a pretty good defense, even if they played a bit "vanilla".

2. Cousins looked accurate, decisive, and in control. While I know Rex will be around this season....wonder if we have to use a second QB in a game if it will be Cousins or Rex off the bench first. Cousins continues to impress me, and I was not on the Cousins bandwagon when he was drafted. And....yes....I realize he was playing against backups....but he was also playing with backups....and he still looked far better than many of the backup's I have seen on other teams this pre-season.....heck, he looks better than Kolb right now.

3. Morris, Crawford, Robinson, Briscoe all impressed me last evening. While Banks had a nice return for a TD, he also did this last pre season against the bucs.....but that did not carry over to the regular season. Based on the pre season games (I did not get a chance to visit TC) that I have seen, Banks is on the outside looking in. Garcon, Morgan, Hankerson, Moss, Robinson and Briscoe.......Banks would be my next WR.

4. Oline is an issue. Even when the starters get back and play.....they will still need time to gel. Just look at how the bears Oline (first team) played last evening........kept our defense at bay for Cutler. It is definitely hurting us that several of our starters are not playing now, and this will carry over into the season as the Oline will still need time to gel, something that should be happening now. Even though we have competition, it may be competition between players that are not quite top tier linemen....outside of Williams. And even he is debatable.

5. As many have been saying for a while, our secondary still looks suspect. And, if Merriweather has a season ending injury, along with Gomes....it certainly impacts how good the secondary can be. Hall did not have a good game....Cutler threw the ball as if our third string was playing. Of course...this leads to the next item

6. Our Dline got absolutely no pressure on Cutler for the most part. As others have mentioned, we seem to be unable to generate a pass rush without a blitz. The bears first team seemed to provide good protection allowing Cutler time to dissect our secondary.

7. Da Bears looked pretty sharp last night (first team).....certainly better than the Bills first team.

8. Can Raheem Morris have his guys practice catching the darn ball for interceptions? Several players in the past two games showed "hands of stone" where instead of a timely interception, the bears ended up with new life.

We should fare better against the Colts this weekend, don't think anyone will confuse their defense for da bears. While I don't want to read to much into preseason games.....we certainly looked like the young, inexperienced team on the field last evening during the first half.
A winning effort begins with preparation.
Failures are expected by losers, ignored by winners.

RGIII's final series in the first half was a 70 yard drive that ended in a FG. Its too bad they didn't get a touchdown on that drive.

I'm glad Cousins did so well in the second half. If there is seriously any talk of controversy with RGIII, I'll puke. But it would be awesome if Cousins can bump Rex.

Btw I'm sure they commented on this in the game thread, but Jason Campbell was painful to watch.

I look at what the O Line did for what it is. Trent Williams played very well against Julius Peppers.

Adam Gettis & Leribus are not only backups, but they are rookies who faced a very formidable front seven.

Gettis has obvious leverage issues on some plays, but keep in mind he is an undersized, rookie lineman. He doesn't look out of place, but with coaching, experience, and weight training, he showed that he can play in this league.

Leribeus has played well also. Will Montgomery was getting pushed back a bit, but I think much of that is fan over reaction. Montgomery is what I'd call a steady Center. He's probably middle of the road in terms of the league.

As for Polumbus. I disagree. He has not played as poorly as some say. He's facing the starting defenders, and on most plays holds his own. He's also playing with Niles Paul & Fred Davis, two TEs who aren't exactly superior blockers next to him. He is also supposed to be a reserve, but is forced to start. If Brown can't go, I think he is serviceable but not spectacular. On the sack/fumble, Alfred Morris told the media that it was on him. He released into his route before blocking in pass protection. And, if you look at the replay that's right. So, some of those pressures are not all on the linemen although it may look that way.

I urge people to remember that this line is down 3 starters. The only one who may be out indefinitely is Brown. So, what I'm looking at is a line of young reserves who played well against one of the better front 7s in the game. That's why I am not as pessimistic as some.

Gettis gets to the second level and runs well downfield. He's a rookie though. He will get better. With another draft and free agency, we might have a line that is talented and deep.

Haven't had a chance to read through this entire thread, but I presume you mean the controversy for back up.

Coaches have praised him b/c while he may not be the most athletic guy, he's always in the right spot. His biggest downfall is coverage but he's REALLY good in run support and always seems to be involved in the tackle when it's in the secondary.

this team is missing Sean Taylor now more than ever. their defense would be miles better if he were back there. and laron Landry, to a lesser extent, who is off to a good start with the jets. even landry is better than any of the safeties they have now. their secondary has taken a major dip in the last five years from pro browlers and talented players like Taylor, Carlos Rogers (who could stick to his man) and Landry to the third rate stuff they have out there now....major issues.

I'm really concerned that our possible 8-8 season is in jeopardy because of this devastating loss

AND

I will be very surprised if the Packers don't fire their coach and let Rogers go after losing to the Browns who look like they are a favourite for the 1st or 2nd pick in the draft in 2013

this is the pre season people - get a grip
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Something I've noticed is Shanahan has repeatedly said that they are putting players in a position to be reviewed to see what they can do and what they can't. Our Oline did not really do a whole lot of zone blocking last night. It was mano e' mano. They Bears ran a lot of stunts with their Dline, something I'm sure we didn't expect going into the game. Players on twitter seem to have acknowledged their mistakes and understand that they need to make improvements. I imagine that this team, while not being the most talented, have smart players who can self evaluate and will work to get better.

We're not there yet and I don't expect us to contend this year. Too many missing pieces but we have a number of pieces in place to be VERY good down the road.

Also I would expect that we will be seeing how many players are on the street once cuts come down after next game to bring in some Vets to fill some holes.

Looks like Rg3 isn't the only rookie QB having a rough time the second preseason game...The Steel curtain is showing MR.Luck a thing or two. luck just threw a pick that was run back 49 yards for a T.D. but thats OK.... he is not in a skins uniform so the sky can't be falling. Or wait a min, he is just a rookie also learning the nfl just like RG3.

John Keim's Post Game Analysis

5. Why the run game must produce better: Of the seven third down situations faced by Washington’s No. 1 offense, four were for five yards or more – and three were for at least 12 yards. First down plays were an issue, too, though the stats were skewed a bit by two plays. The Redskins gained 42 yards on nine first down plays (excluding an end of the half kneel down). But 32 of those yards came on two plays. The other seven first down plays managed 10 yards (yeah, I guess you could have figured that out on your own).

Consequently, Griffin dropped back to throw 13 times; five times it was at least second and 9 or more and three times it was third and four or more. He completed three of those passes for 22 yards (he was sacked once and another pass resulted in a pass interference penalty). On third downs, Griffin was two of four for 24 yards and first down.

6. Meanwhile, Cousins faced third and three or shorter on four of his six third downs. And of his 11 second downs, seven were second and five or less. Does that make a difference? Well, Cousins was six of six passing on second down for 67 yards and four of five on third down for 79 more.

Of course. This is the entire point of pre-season. It would be absolutely useless to trot out every nook and cranny of the offense to try to win a pre-season game. Each game has its separate evaluation; the first game focused on pocket and more rhythm-based passing, whereas the second game focused more on the running game and a moving pocket. The coaches will look at what worked and what didn't and adjust based on that. Following this trend, I'm sure we'll see a lot more short and intermediate passing to see how well RGIII can work those routes underneath the coverage.

Watched on TV tonight and it wasn't as bad as I thought in the stands. Wasn't great, but wasn't horrible. Correction, it was Cedric Griffin that was an embarrassment. They threw on him all night. I thought it was D. Hall. Guess that's the view I get for spending $40 for a ticket. I was at the top!

There was really no improvement in the o-line. We have the same starters and they are almost all injured again, just like last year. Hopefully the Redskins will pay more attention to the o-line in the next draft.

It's not that we did not address the o-line - we drafted three o-linemen this year. That is a lot of attention to it. Also, I am not concerned about them not being 1st rounders. We picked the guys that best fit our system. They still need time to grow - no one debates that, coaches, players or fans.

What the FO did not do was pick up veteran o-linemen that are can be starters. I think it was mostly because of concerns in the secondary coupled with limited options in FA. Oh, and that whole cap-gate thing didn't help either.

It'll be a year or two, but everything is moving in the right direction. Losing Sean Taylor was the single biggest hit to this franchise since Dan Snyder bought the team. In so many ways, it takes years to make up the ground, as his absence leaves a rippling effect on all personnel decisions.

I am not concerned about this game. Bottom line, Orakpo and Merriweather's injuries do not appear serious after negative MRI results. That is the most important news for now.

Due to salary-gate, that's not the fault of the coaches.

They drafted 3 linemen, how much more attention can be paid to it? If they drafted 4 linemen, they'd lack depth somewhere else...and I'm sure you'd be in that thread saying they should have drafted deeper at that position too.

Aside from Jamal Brown, I don't agree. Kory simply had his knee scoped, that is COMMON for people who suffer that injury. Only in Madden do you come back from an injury 100% on time without lingering complication.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Chris Chester was healthy last year.
