Redskins sign Neil Rackers
We signed Neil Rackers.
Years ago, I would have loved this signing, but Rackers isn't what he used to be. I doubt he beats out Gano - Gano is great in the pre-season.

Graham Gano just gulped, hard.
The Redskins have signed kicker Neil Rackers, according to Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston.
“We’re headed to Washington,” said Rackers, who spent the last two years in Houston. “I visited with Coach Shanahan and [special teams coach] Danny Smith out there [Monday] and really enjoyed what they had to say. I’ll be competing for a job with Graham Gano, who is an established, good kicker.”
Rackers said he wanted to stay in Houston, but that the Texans never came through with a multi-year offer.
“We’ve had promises for a while now on a long-term deal and they came to us with a minimum offer,” Rackers said. “So we just felt like the opportunity for advancement was not in Houston. We came in and did the job like they asked us to. Didn’t really feel like that was appreciated. I am really excited to go to Washington. Really excited to compete. Really excited to hopefully win a job and be the guy in Washington.”
Gano probably isn’t as excited.

Might have to eat some early crow - Didn't realize that Rackers had such a good year.
Rackers set a Texans team record last season with 135 points.

This BR report ranks Rackers 25th and Gano 26th.
Impressive is Rackers KO power.

Are you being facetious? He scored a 2 on KO power. Only had 22 touchbacks. Gano at least got a 5.

How does he kick with DL 3-4 yatds into the back field.
Danny Smith was more of the problem last year than Gano was. Any time your FG/extra point team gets 9 kicks blocked there is a problem with coaching.

We needed to have competition for Gano and the FO has brought in a solid kicker
we might even see another one brought in
we have been looking for these guys to ensure that there is competition for each and every position
Rackers will push Gano and we'll end up with the better kicker

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I predict one of two things will happen:
1) Gano will beat out Rackers in the pre-sesason, going 12-12 on kicks including a beast 60 yarder. Then will finish the season 30-46 with eight blocked kicks.
2) Rackers beats out Gano in the preseason. Then finishes out the regular season 30-46 with eight blocked kicks. Gano will get picked up by Pittsburgh and earn a pro bowl appearance.

Also, behind a blocking unit that allowed 9 blocks!

Tie breaker for ganoooo!
Most wasn't his fault not ALL but he did set a Redskins record last year, an we ain't no expansion team. He has a beast of a leg and if he goes anywhere else we will regret it as he becomes a pro bowl kicker for years.
The problem was the line last year not him... Also I see him kicking more chip ins and extra points w sexy rexy holding the clip board.

I hope for 2 things
whomever is kicking for the Redskins has a great year here
The kicker or kickers that leave here to go kick somewhere else, have a great career

I read that worng. My bad. Thanks for the correction.
With Rackers FG power, one would think that his Touchbacks would be higher on KOs. Was his teams coach asking him to pooch kick?
I ended up picking Gano.
I looked at Rackers career record and in Cincy, his first two years, he was in the 57 and 60 pct. He has one good year and goes to 83%.
He goes to Arizona and in the next two years goes 75 and 76% in better home field conditions. He hits 95% in 2005. Then hits consecutive 76% in 2006 and 70% in 2007. Arizona goes to the domed stadium in 2006. From 2008 - 2011, Rackers finally puts together 4 straight 80+% seasons.
It took Neil 9 seasons to become a consistent 80% kicker and that was with a domed home field.
Neil is 35 years old Gano is 25 yrs old.
Shayne Graham came in here last year as the 4th best all time FG pct guy and coming off a great season with the Pats as a substitute kicker. He tanked. I am going to predict that Rackers does the same.
Gano wins especially since he kicks great in pre-season. This will be Gano's make it or break it season.
All time FG percentage kickers
Rackers barely ranks above shwishy because of his inconsistency in his younger years.

Gotta say this suprised me.....not bringing in competition, but Neil Rackers is a respected, good kicker. That said, Gano is younger, and I believe, has a better leg, especially at distance. Think that this is his wake-up call from the coach.....as we all remember his clutch misses, like the Dallas game last season at FEDEX.......
I am not off the Gano bandwagon just yet..........
