Profootballtalk:'Skins Still Angling For O-GUN

Post by 1niksder »

POSTED 6:10 p.m. EDT; UPDATED 7:07 p.m. EDT, July 23, 2004

'SKINS STILL ANGLING FOR O-GUN

A league source tells us that Redskins owner Dan Snyder is passing word through intermediaries to Miami defensive end Adewale Ogunleye that Snyder eventually will swing a trade for the unsigned free agent -- and then reward him with a healthy contract.

Snyder, we hear, is encouraging Ogunleye to be patient as Snyder prepares to make his move.

Ogunleye and the Dolphins have been at odds throughout the offseason. The Fins slapped him with the highest possible RFA tender, requiring any team interested in signing him to an offer sheet to be ready to pony up a first-round and a third-round draft pick.

Ogunleye, meanwhile, has openly lobbied for a long-term deal or a trade, threatening not to sign his tender until after the seventh week of the regular season. The team responded by cutting his tender dramatically on June 15.

Rumors of a trade to the Redskins (possibly involving offensive tackle Chris Samuels in return) have been swirling for weeks. The thinking in some circles is that, as the Dolphins get closer to the start of the regular season, they'll be more willing to take a player or some draft picks in return for a disgruntled pass rusher who probably won't be in a position to make a difference for the Dolphins until November.

Stay tuned.

I think we just need to wait till next year. Why waste money on him when we haven't even seen what the guys we have now can do. We can't base them soley off of last year because coaching makes a big difference!! Let Gregg do his thing for one year please! Gibbs is going to be here for 5 years!

Your right. It would be nice to be a team with a nice draft next year.

Samuels, who will have somewhat of a 2nd break-out year this year, should not be trade bait! Let's give them R. Gardner or someone like that.

I would have no problem with that but to have to give up Samuels would be a deal breaker

I dont think the skins could afford giving Ogunleye a huge deal... that is unless they trade Samuels.. but tackle is too important of a position. I also think Gregg Williams should be allowed to work his magic.

Not so fast.
Trading Samuels is a "deal-breaker" ?
Why ? Because he's Jake's favorite ? C'mon. Not even Jake would stand in the way of anything that could potentially fill the biggest hole we have left on the team.
Look, I like C-Sam as much as the next guy. Not as much as Jake does, but still...I like him just fine. However, there aren't many players on the current roster that I wouldn't trade.
Steel yourselves, kids. With his contract, and his refusal to renegotiate, it could happen. Nothing is sacred anymore.
Sometimes, you have to give up something good to get something good in return. Witness Bailey for Portis.

Totally agree TC.....Samuels play last year doesn't match his pay. Bottom line I trust Bugel, he'll let Gibbs know if Chris is expendable or not.

Trading Samuels would add on to our cap hit, so trading him shouldn't be an option. And yes, quality left tackles are harder to find then defensive ends in this league.

Yes I would. Why would I EVER want my FAVORITE player traded? It wouldn't make ANY sense if I wanted that to happen, so you're wrong there. And as far as our weakness on our team is concerned, it's OBVIOUS that the coaches are content with who we have on the team so why ruin what we have? We can't always get what we want in an offseason. And it's no guarantee that Ogunleye is what everyone thinks he is.

I don't know who posted the Rod Gardner suggestion, but while trading Rod Gardner makes plenty of sense for us, it makes no sense for the 'Phins. They're set at WR with Chambers and Boston, while their Oline is WEAK, especially at tackle. I mean, who the heck is John St.Claire? Does he even belong in pro football? Our coaches are high on Brandon Whiney, and if they should decide to trade Samuels, I don't doubt that Buges will have Whiney ready for Kearse when the time comes.

well we have to look ahead also guys. do we have an extended contract with chris right now?? what is going to cost us to keep him next year?? the man (O-Gun) in question has 24 1/2 sacks in to years. do we have a graeter need on the D-line?? wouldn't that maove make a bit more on thye well rounded side?? as opposed to being totaly stacked at ofense while having nothing to offer on the defensesive side in the way of a pass rush?? bottem line we need this guy. GO GET HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyway we can.

I think Gibss plan has been very obvious from the beginning....we drafted 2 o-linemen......got a lefty for a qb, therefore devaluing the lt position....trade the underperforming tackle who is not going to be here after his contract is up anyways and get a potentially dominant DE to team with those lb's and we just solved our pass rushing problems while at the same time not weaking our O. We can make up for our shortcomings on the oline easier than the dline(see L.Tomlinson). Then next year we move P-Ram in and hopefully the olineman we drafted have been somewhat developed to step in. I just hope we can get our 2nd rounder back and Ogun..but i doubt it.

If the Skins could get a top flight pass rusher (signed for 5-6 years) in exchage for a top flight OT (unrestricted FA next year), why not make the trade. My resoning is this...
1. Rod Gardner does not have the trade value to get A-wal. :-#
2. What did O.Pace ask of the Rams? Some $20 or 25 million in signging bonus? You know Samuels took notice of that. How much can the Skins commit to Chris? Will he take less than LaVar got? :hmm:
3. Brandon Winey - Now I'm an not going to say Winey could replace Samuels, but I will say this, with Bugel & Gibbs coaching Dockery & Winey, these two young guys could be a viable duo. With Brunnell in the offense, Jansen & Thomas become the blind side protection, Dockery & Winey become the road graders.

Bottom line is that I would prefer Samuels manning the LT, Jansen & Samuels are two of my favorite players, but we could get a valuable defender at an acceptable loss on Offense - Sorry Jake.

Chambers wants BIG $$$ too so nothing has happen there yet

The Dolphins simultaneously are negotiating contracts for Chambers and Adewale Ogunleye, with the hopes that signing one will put more pressure on the other. Miami could use a franchise tag for the other player next season.

Does anyone really think Ogunleye is that good? I mean really...He has Jason Taylor on that line with him. I wonder who got all those double teams, leaving Ogun man to man. After all, I'm one of those that isn't sold on Portis yet either.

I think both O-Gun and Portis are that good and think it would be great for them to prove it to the rest of the world as Washington Redskins

But at what price is the question CP is a done deal and the cost has been debated

I still feel in the end we will work something out with Chris so I'd hate to see him go... if we could get O-Gun for Gardner I wouldn't think twice... if Samuels is going to due more damage than good (Cap wise) then see ya but he would give Buges at least year to wrok with Whiney and that could only help

If O-Gun comes here, I'll take up double teams. If he doesn't he'll be good. If he does, like I would think, then Phillip Daniels could beat constant 1-on-1s.

the question is do you think o-gun is better than our current de's.......yes absolutely 200 percent better....and taylor is a great de but to have 15 sacks is no fluke. Not many of the good ones have done that, much less the guys that play on the other side of the good ones. You put any skins de on the other side of taylor and tell me he will have 15 sacks! im not saying he is a cant miss, but he would definitly be an upgrade.

I hope we get O-Gun. I will be thrilled. I would rather, despite much objection here, trade our 1st rounder instead of Samuels to get him. O-Gun is young, healthy and very productive. He has good character also. Our D-line will be vastly improved.

An upgrade? Yes, I would agree. However, he's a VERY expensive upgrade. Samuels, draft pick, whatever...not to mention his salary. Let's just stick with what we have and see what happens with Williams behind the D.
