NFL punishes the Saints: suspensions, fines, and draft picks

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

NFL punishes the Saints: suspensions, fines, and draft picks

Post by Hooligan »

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8 ... aking_news

Sean Payton suspended for a year without pay, Loomis (GM) suspended 8 games, and Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely. Saints fined $500,000 and lose their 2nd round draft picks in 2012 and 2013. Wow.

Normally this would be in Around the League, but I think the Redskins should be very concerned about this, since players admitted the same went on here. The NFL hasn't finished their investigation yet, so punishment for the Redskins organization could be on the horizon. Mostly, I'm worried about us potentially losing draft picks... we need those now more than ever.

The issue with the Saints is that the head coach was aware. That is "apparently" not the case here... If it happened, the guilty party has been penalized already...

Course, as we are already aware, the NFL is not above conjuring rules from thin air...

Yes, it was mentioned in a reply to a thread about the Saints. This thread is about whether the Redskins need to be concerned about being penalized similarly. It seems likely to me that we'll get something, since it originated here and happened for quite a while. That, and the NFL seems to enjoy beating us down.

Penalties are not strictly for running the bounty program, but mainly for their denial of it and refusal to stop it.

Do we really know it "originated" here? Williams was a head coach in Buffalo and a def. coordinator in Tennessee for years before coming here.

Its a good question though. It seems to me that this is so far in the past as far as the Redskins are concerned. None of the coaches involved are here anymore. How many players are still here? Even so, I wouldn't put anything past Goodell. He might penalize us a couple picks and suspend Dan Snyder for a year.

I'm really shocked by this penalty. I can understand the punishment for Williams, but suspending Payton for an entire year just strikes me as ridiculously harsh.

Payton lied during the original investigation, as did Lommis and GW

Yeah? Was it "under oath" as well? hah. I still think Payton's punishment is over the top. The team owners should be taking a hard look at how Goodell uses his authority. Never know when its going to come back around on one of them.

I take it GW's "indefinite" suspension is at least a year since the commish will "review his status at the end of the 2012 season."

Yep and his reinstatement will be based on his co-operation as the investigation proceeds

Which has nothing to do with the Redskins

While suspending former Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely in connection with the bounty scandal while he was in New Orleans, the NFL has cleared the Redskins of any wrongdoing while Williams was with the team.

In the statement announcing the suspensions read in part:

“While NFL staff has interviewed people in connection with public allegations of bounty programs at other clubs, no evidence was established showing that the programs at other clubs involved targeting opposing players or rewarding players for injuring an opponent.”

Those “other clubs” included the Redskins as well as the Bills, Titans and Jaguars, the other teams that Williams has coached.

in light of the very latest news that the Greg Williams dropped $15k on a table in front of Redskins and told them that "Brad Johnson does not finish this game", the Redskins likely will be the next to be investigated.

Yes, the league said they closed the case on the Redskins. That was before this story:

Skins could be next in line for major penalties. Again, these stories are brand new, coming out after the league "closed the case" on washington.

they could find these to be even worse than new orleans and require a new investigation of washington.
