Across the bay, the Oakland Athletics seem to be the one contender with a need at second base, and the A's have expressed interest in Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, a cheaper alternative to Jerry Hairston.
A package deal, involving Julio and Roberts, could bring the Orioles closer to their grandiose goal of landing A's left-hander Barry Zito.
I'd rather trade Roberts and Julio for Zito instead of Groom or Jerry Hairston. Jerry has been a beast in the outfield but the sad thing is that he wants to play second... so I guess I'd rather trade Roberts. Groom has been decent this year and Julio has been unusually inconsistent.
Zito has been bad this year (to his standards) but I would like to see how a change of scenery would improve Zito.

Aww! I like B-Roberts, but I guess it would be okay if Hairston was back at 2B. Hey, if Hairston makes the kind of defensive plays at 2B that he's been making in RF lately, I'll be more than happy to see him back there. Besides, there's no wall behind 2B for him to get hurt on. Just outfielders.
This is exactly what the Orioles need to compete. They need a veteran starter pitcher. I know Zito has struggled but he is better then all of the other starters the O's have.
Yes, DO THIS O's! We need Starting pitching so badly! And Zito is a Beast just has not been one this year! but i think he could get his stuff back!!! Julio sucks and Roberts is only average! I think that deal would be a huge steal for a SP the caliber of Zito!
The only problem is that then we are stuck with a backup second baseman who is a utility player. Until Hairston shows the ability to last for more than half of a season, we are really stepping out on a limb, especially given Zito's performance this year. We really need pitching though, and you gotta give up something to get something. It would give us a former Cy Young winner so what the heck.
