I suspect that Anthony Armstrong, & Stallworth are gone for sure. Possibly Niles Paul is on the way out too. I can't see us getting rid of Santana right now, but who knows.

They're definitely the three that I'd look to offload, still not sure about Austin either...

frankcal20 wrote:Hey Guys - instead of having multiple topics regarding free agents that the Redskins actually sign - let's keep it all in one thread. I will do my best to continue to update this top post with the guys we sign. Something tells me it's going to be a slow day until we figure out how much we actually can spend.

WR - PIERRE GARCON (IND) 5-yr, $42.5M, roughly $21.5M guaranteed
WR - JOSH MORGAN (SF) - 5 - yr, up to $12m $7.5m guaranteed
DE - ADAM CARRIKER (WAS) 4-yr, $20m, 7 guaranteed
WR - Eddie Royal (Den)

Can't wait to see Eric Winston, Ben Grubbs, or Geoff Schwartz on this list. We need some linemen.

Mathis isn't top tier. 8 years in the NFL, 4 teams, never started 16 games, and in five of those seasons he started 0 games.

Well based on last years play I thought he was great. He did not allow one sack last season. Did you know that?

I didn't, but that's one season and he's 30 years old. And he's only ever started games in 3 of his 8 seasons. That's the kind of signing you make when you have a good offensive line and want to take a gamble on a guy staying healthy and productive, not when you have an offensive line that needs upgrading to keep your rookie franchise qb upright and healthy.

Just saying here. I mean we just signed Carriker to a contract a normal starting defensive lineman deserves. We just signed Garcon to no.1 wide receiver type money. Both of these players have yet to perform or prove that they deserve those type of contracts they are going to receive.

The first whisper I hear of a decent guard we are going after and I am supposed to be against it. I mean we need help at the offensive line. Mathis played outstanding last year which should be noted and not ignored. Its no problem to take a look at him. If he passes a physical then Im cool with it.

Garcon is 26 and has improved each year and doesn't have health issues. Carriker got $7 million guaranteed. If Mathis is the best that we can do to improve the oline that is a huge fail.

Well were you and I disagree is on Mathis. Mathis opened up huge holes for Mccoy last year. Is rated by many as one of the top guards in this free agent class. He didnt allow one sack last year!!! So I am not going to try to convince you otherwise.

For the record I never said it was the best we could to improve this Oline. If you are concerned about injury thats understandable. But it should be noted he was fabulous last year. He helped Mccoy rush for record bests in his career and did not allow one sack last year. How is that not impressive?

If he could do it consistently, I'd be impressed. Doing it once in 8 years isn't. Especially when that one good year happens to come when he's playing next to a LT that is regarded as one of the best in the NFL. Signing Mathis to anything other than a short-term incentive laden deal would the epitome of a Danny/Cerrato move.

Well I am open to bringing in any help at the offensive line. Through free agency or draft. I think that since we dont pick until the third round of this years draft that maybe we would get some help via free agency? Sure there are gems to be found in latter rounds but a good vet would help this Oline.

Now I am not against the signing of Garcon. I thought that would be enough help in the WR position. Heck I can even see Royal being a good pick up.

Then we go and get Josh Morgan who was hurt after the second game last year. Its getting to be a little overkill when we have pending needs in other areas. Top it off we gave starter money to a rotational player in Carriker.

Am I the only one concerned about getting help for the Oline? Its a little risky depending on the draft especially since we dont pick until the third round this year. I thought the Oline could use some upgrades two at least. Maybe I am wrong?

Brutal. Two Va Tech players.

Well there are a couple advantages over Hurricanes. First it means they've been on teams that have won something before. And yet they have less attitude about it...

That's the number i was after. No point cutting Moss for that savings, unless they think he's done...

Safe to say Gaffney is done here? How many receivers does one team need?

Hankerson
Paul
Gaffney
Armstrong
Moss
Royal
Garcon
Morgan
Stallworth

I's have to think Stallworth and Armstrong are gone for sure.

I'm sorry I can't get excited about any of the wr we have signed. We should have taken the money we spent on johnson and royal to get a RT.

We sure have rated a lot of our precious casio space on meh receivers. You can't make an solid argument that Garcon is clearly better than Gafney, or johnson is better than moss, or royal is better than who ever is next.

We spent a ton of cap space and haven't clearly improved our wr corps. Hopefully, johnson or royal got the will montgomery disposable contract so when they don't make the team they can be cut without impacting the cap.

We still need a starting RT and a RG to compete with the dore w signed last year.

Just having RG3 was going to improve our wrs as long we kept him up right.

This has been worse than my worst fears!

Free Agents thus far

Post by rskin72 »

Well, while I am not suprised that we went after a speedy #1 receiver (Garcon), I am suprised by continued WR additions to the plethora of receivers we had already. While I was underimpressed with most of our receiver corp last season, still had to take into account who was throwing them the ball.

Really suprised not to hear more on D-fense, specifically secondary. We do have the draft coming up, but don't pick for a while after our QB choice.

Also, nothing heard WRT Fletcher, nor Hightower.....but hopefully with our new QB (RGIII come on down), and additions at receiver, getting into the end zone will not be as much of a challenge as it has been the past, oh, 3-5 years......
