Free Agency needs

Post by Morgan33 »

Now that the franchise tags are set, we know who is available next week. The redskins have several needs and could potentially take care of most of them in FA. Then we can draft players to potentially start and some to learn for a year or two before taking over.

Notable FA:
WR - Vincent Jackson, with Stevie Johnson and Bowe off the market, we will have to pay a little more for him. Although you add him to LH and JG and use moss in the slot on long situations, you have a very decent WR crew. other option may be Colsten

G - Ben Grubbs, G - Carl Nicks - We need a guard bad, there are several options on the market, but these are two of the best. If we land one of these two, and have all of our workouts this year, it will tremendously help our line. Which means if we have a young QB he wont be running for his life the entire season. Then we can draft for depth.

QB - I know some of you want Payton, but look at Alex Smith. More Mobile and has nothing from the 49ERS yet. I do expect him to return to the 49ERS though. He could be a valuable option if RG3 is gone and we can let Tannehill learn for a couple years.

If these FA are gone and we do not get any of them we should look at:
WR - garcon
CB - Carr
WR - Reggie Wayne
QB - Kyle ORton

Just some thoughts, let me know what you think...

I really do think the biggest competition at WR will be Jax to the Bears. I'm actually ok if we don't get him but lots of folks won't agree with me. I'll take Grubbs over Nicks only b/c Grubbs is more suited for our type of running game. I've given some thought to Alex Smith but he's from the Bay Area and I can't imagine him leaving SF.

My #1 FA signing has to be London Fletcher. After that, then we can get some other guys.

Not sure the Skins will make a move at G in free agency. I think they like Kory at one guard and it may be too soon to give up on Chester who they just signed last year. Tackle, on the other hand, might be more of a concern. Brown just hasn't been able to stay healthy, and I don't think Willie Smith is ready to start yet.

As for WR, I'm sure they'll chase VJax, but so are a bunch of other teams including the Pats and the Bears, both of whom have an established QB. Maybe Colston or Garcon sign here, but neither really excite me. And I wouldn't be so quick to downgrade Santana to 4th on the depth chart. I think that when healthy, he's still the best WR on the roster right now.

Obviously, QB is the top need and I think Plan A will be Manning, which may means Wayne and/or Garcon as WR.

On defense, they could use another CB, but I doubt it will be a top line starter given the money they have tied up in Wilson and Hall.
Priority will be resigning Fletch, as well as adding a back-up middle linebacker, and then figuring out the safety positions.

I expect Atogwe to be back, and hope they can bring Landry back on a one year deal. But I think that ship may have sailed...

on special teams, veteran competition for Gano...

Alex Smith isn't going anywhere.

I think we should go after (first) Marques Colston, Ben Grubbs or Carl Nicks, re-sign Fletcher, Brandon Carr, and trade up for RG3.

if we got these guys our lineup would be:

QB-Robert Griffin III

WR-Marques Colston
WR-Leonard Hankerson or Santana Moss in the slot.

RB-Roy Helu or Tim Hightower or Evan Royster

(FB)-Mike Sellers

TE#1-Fred Davis
TE#2-Chris Cooley

LT-Trent Williams
LG-Ben Grubbs or Carl Nicks
C-Will Montgomery or Phillip Blake
RG-Lichtensteiger or Chester
RT-Willie Smith

DE-Barry Cofield
DE-Adam Carriker
DT-Jarvis Jenkins

OLB-Ryan Kerrigan
OLB-Brian Orakpo
MLB-London Fletcher
MLB-Perry Riley

CB-Brandon Carr
CB-Josh Wilson
SS-???
FS-???

Damn good lineup (playoff caliber!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Hail Robert Griffin III!

21 Sean Taylor will never be forgotten.....

Earlier this offseason, I suggested that we target:

Carl Nicks OG Saints
Vincent Jackson WR Chargers

Nicks believes that he should be highest paid interior O Lineman. He's probably right, but if that price is too high, Ben Grubbs might be a good consolation prize.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

I honestly think Garcon would/will be a better CHEAPER option than VJack. Garcon had no one to throw to him and he still put up career highs. I say let the bears deal with VJack's attitude and let's get Garcon's speed and ability to get open. The money (hopefully) saved on Garcon should absolutely go to getting Carr AND Nicks or Grubbs.
$40 million under the cap... Spend it all, I'm sick of losing.
May #21 never be worn again by another Redskin but may every Redskin play like they are wearing #21 on their backs.

Yeah, that's the way I'm leaning. I like Garcon, I don't like attitude.

Hell, we can get a couple of 3ft WRs if we have RG3, he's THAT good!!! Then spend all the money on enormous linemen to keep him healthy.

OK, I'm watching the Chelsea game and I'm on my 4th beer now so perhaps a little exageration just then, but you get my point!

I'm asking seriously, what do you like about Garcon. To me he is just a guy. Nothing special. A #3 WR or #2, at best! We haver plenty of those. We need a #1 and he aint it!

I would prefer to have Kory as our #6 OL. The first guy of the bench when one of our interior guys go down! I'de also like Brown as a backup or not at all.

This.....

would mean very few draft picks, and still quite a few holes

Here are some low level free agents they should look at...

Offensive guard Chilo Rachal, 26 years old.

Wide receiver Eddie Royal, 25 years old.

Cornerback Terrell Thomas, 27 years old.

Offensive tackle Anthony Collins, 26 years old.
