WR will be hot item for Skins during Free Agency

Post by tribeofjudah »

Report: Redskins plan to sign high-profile WR The Washington Post reports the Redskins are "making plans" to sign a "high-profile" free agent wide receiver in March.
The Redskins no longer have a single proven receiver who can separate from top corners and make plays after the catch. The team plans to address the position via free agency as opposed to the draft. Vincent Jackson and Pierre Garcon are considered the top targets, though Marques Colston is another option if he escapes New Orleans. Reggie Wayne would only be courted as part of a package deal with Peyton Manning.

so one person sharpens another.

Other than Viccent Jackson, none of those guys fit that description.

Colston is a very good, but not great, possession WR with an average yards per catch.

Garcon is a younger Gaffney. His production over the past the years is almost IDENTICAL to Gaffney's (JG caught 3 more passes for 58 more yards).

Wayne is the best of the group but is entering NFL AARP eligibility.

Basically the Redskins will be signing Vincent Jackson.

About time we had a legit threat at WR...

Keep in mind, Jackson has 600 yards less than Braylon Edwards does over the same span and Jackson has been been on a team with a much better QB than Edwards has had.

+1

In my view, Jackson is the best target out there based on character and ability. Landing RG3 would help production too. One analyst was describing how immediately he thought RG3 would impact the Skins offense off the stretch playaction plays where the QB can reverse field and take off or throw. With the QB commanding an extra man in the box to "spy" we can get our WRs isolated deep more often.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

That's the threat of a speedy qb w a good arm.. The swing plays and play action still have the threat of run if the defense sticks to pass coverage and doesn't bite on the run.

I'd like to land Vincent Jackson. I keep wondering though what all of this means for Moss? Haven't heard much about any efforts to re-sign him or anything yet.

I didn't think much of Colston either, but you need to take a look at his stats compared to Vincent Jackson. VJ has had 3 thousand yard seasons in the last 7 years. Colston has had 5 1000+ yard seasons in the past 6 years. They're both about the same size and Colston is a year younger.

I thought Moss re-signed last year, he should be under contract. It would seem that only Garcon fits the age range targeted in last years free agency, VJ is 29 and Marques will be as well before the season starts whereas Garcon is only 25. Not saying that's who they'll target but I do wonder if they are going to throw money at WR's who are nearing 30 years old.

Hell yeah, you're right! For some reason I thought he was an FA this year. Thanks for clarifying.

I'm not sure I'd like to see the skins invest a lot of money in a 29 year old receiver (VJax). Maybe they can do a contract with an easy out after 3 or 4 years. I'm thinking DJax and Bowe will be off the market.

Then Colston or Garcon become the best options? Neither really excite me as number one receivers. (Ok, i see know that Colston will be 29 too...)

Manningham? Eh.

Garcon will be a high paid WR. Manningham would be worth a look. But we still have time. Some teams that are WAY over the cap will be required to cut some players. What about going after the WR from Pitt? Can't recall his name.

wallace. Problem is he's a restricted free agent, so we'd have to give up our 1st round pick. and you can't trade down. You have to give up your original pick. Not happening...

Hmmmmm. I know that. My solution would be to get Wallace, Flynn in FA and then draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round to backup.

Isn't it funny how much weight we put in unproven players that haven't played a down in the NFL vs guys who are proven talent. And my answer is YES but we have to figure out what we're going to do at the QB position first and foremost.

Why on Earth would Garcon be a high paid WR? He's no better the Gaffney. The only advantage he had over Gaffney is age!

Manningham is just another receiver with a lot of talent that underachievers and runs poor routes.

We heave plenty of Garcons and Manninfhams on our roster.

Colston is an excellent redzone threat and in terms of character, I'd have to put him ahead of VJ. Moss should remain excellent in the slot.

Also, Colston may be tougher for the Saints to retain than these other guys. The Saints have to worry about Nicks, Brees, etal.

I get what you are saying and you are right. I was just pointing out that Jackson was the only WR they listed that fit the description of a down the field play maker. Colston is the better guy on most downs, but Jackson is the only guy on that list that will make a safety or CB's butthole pucker and D coordinators have to gamer plan for him.

Those numbers aren't very useful without total catches or more importantly ypc. I'd guess Vjax may be similar in total yards but w less catches and less passes thrown to. Could be wrong jus a guess

You're right on VJ. He has a much higher y/c than any of the other unrestricted FA. Colston and Garcon are 13 to 14 y/c type guys (same for Moss) while VJ is a 18 y/c guy.

VJ Will never give you 80-90 catches/season but he will give you a tuon of big plays (providing you have a QB to get him the ball).

Honestly, Garcon isn't any better than many of the unproven guys on our team. He is a just a guy. There is absolutely nothing special about him!

Only age? How about speed and big play ability? We didn't have a single td pass over 20 yards last season, and Garcon alone had two tds that went for 87 yards. He already turned down 5 years and $35 million from the Colts. He's going to get paid.

Thanks for pointing that out CS. I've just seen his name out there as a guy who's going to get paid this offseason.
