THN Exclusive - Carriker Weighing Free Agency Options

Post by Jake »

Carriker talked to THN recently and was very open about his stance on free agency.

Here's a preview:

As March 13th and the start of free agency approaches, it is likely that the attention of Redskins fans will be placed upon free agents such as London Fletcher, Fred Davis and LaRon Landry. However, flying under the radar is a man who had a career year in 2011.

While Fletcher led the league in tackles, he wasn't the only Redskins defender having a good season, Adam Carriker was putting up a proficient stat line as well. Having missed the 2009 season with a shoulder injury, the 13th overall pick in the 2007 draft played in his fourth full season in 2011. He put up the second most tackles in his career (34) and set a career mark in sacks (5.5), which is more than he had in his first four seasons combined. What was helped propel Carriker to an improved 2011 season?

"A combination of mental awareness of the game after being in the league for five years and being able to physically do anything I want to do," he said.

His two productive seasons in Washington followed a rocky three-year span in St. Louis that saw the Rams only win 13% of their games while Carriker had become labeled a bust. While the former first round pick has had his fair share of trials and tribulations during his time in the NFL, he feels his career is on the rise.

"St. Louis was not good. We won six games and lost 42 games in three years. Washington has been much better. I feel like the future will only improve on that," Carriker said.

A few things that stood out to me:

Carriker says his agent has had discussions with the Redskins since the season ended.

Carriker's comfort w/ Haslett's 3-4 is a factor in his decision making but he's intrigued at the idea of playing in another scheme.

Thanks Jake

with the 2 sides having had 'some' contact, in your estimation, did it sound like Carriker got the feeling that they'll bring him back
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'd love to have him back but with Jarvis in the wings, I think the Skins aren't going to offer him but so much cash.

He'll prolly test the waters.

No problem, SJ.

Both sides having discussions is a very positive sign but it will not be a surprise to see him leave and feel appreciated elsewhere. He could very easily leave but the fact that both sides are talking already is clearly a plus.

Thanks Jake - this guy has handled himself and his job here well

since he came in we've gone from being a complete embarrassment to having a lot of positive signs = especially on defense - be great to have him back but he has to check the market and he's earned it

all the best AC - hope to see you back in B&G this season

With Jenkins coming back, Adam would be a key part of a beast D-line rotation. I hope he signs.

Maybe it is the skeptic in me, but how can we know that a player can come back from the type of injury that Jenkins had 100% healthy and capable of playing every down for the duration of an always grueling NFL season?

Please get Carriker a new contract. If we have a beast D-line and LBs, the pressure on the DBs will be reduced and we can focus spending more $$ on the QB, O-line and WR upgrades needed to compete at a championship level.

How often do we see Skins get wasted in DC only to thrive somewhere else? It's about time we start doing that to other teams. Let Carriker be the start of it.

I would not be against using him in a trade scenario if the price is right, but I believe he is undervalued due to his seasons in St. Louis. My gut says re-sign him for best results and continuity on a much improved Defensive unit.

We as in fans? Well, we don't matter because non of us are doctors and/or coaches. History and Google shows that he should be able to.

I'm all for resigning Carriker. But he isn't "beastly" by any means. He's above average, a consistent and solidy contributor. Jarvis Jenkins, is the one who is alledgedly "beastly".

Who's being wasted? Carriker was a bust in STL and restarted his career here. Your wish has already come true.

Well one can never 'know' but seeing as it's been reported that JJ could have probably even played by end of season 2011, it's not like there isn't grounds for optimism. He has rehabbed strong and SHOULD be ready to go.

Carriker is obviously looking to get paid. So my ONLY criterion in the 'Do We Sign Carriker' question is, is it at a fair market value? If it is, do it.

If it isn't. Thanks for your service Adam, but we have an organization to build and can't afford to overspend at a position we already have options.

Good article Jake, thanks.

This is pretty cool, from the NFC east blog on ESPN. Nice seeing THN and Jake getting mentinoed on there.

Adam Carriker tells Jake Russell of TheHogs.net that he feels he's finally coming into his own as a defensive end and he should be compensated fairly by the Redskins or some other team.
