Union sees announcement in August

By Jayson Stark
ESPN.com

Expos players were told this week that a decision on their 2005 home is near, that it won't be Montreal and that there is a strong likelihood they will be living in the Washington, D.C., area.

Sources familiar with the Expos-relocation process told ESPN.com on Thursday that union leaders Donald Fehr and Gene Orza met Wednesday with Montreal player representative Brian Schneider and his assistant, Brad Wilkerson.

The player reps were informed by the union that there is now an overwhelming probability that they will wind up in either Washington or Northern Virginia -- although there is still a small chance that baseball could opt for Las Vegas.

The players now believe Washington is the favorite, with Northern Virginia looming as a compromise choice if Orioles owner Peter Angelos attempts to block Washington's bid. Either way, the players were told that the union is very confident this is, finally, their last year in Montreal.

They also came away with the impression that San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the Expos have been playing some home games, and Monterrey, Mexico, also are no longer being seriously considered.

Relocation candidates such as Portland, Ore., and Norfolk, Va., were pictured as being extremely unlikely.

Players were not given a specific time for an announcement, but it is expected to be sometime in August. Owners have a meeting scheduled in Philadelphia Aug. 18-19, which appears to be a new, though informal, target date for a decision.

Commissioner Bud Selig said last week that a decision would be announced "sometime this summer."

But for scheduling reasons, and to provide as much time as possible to refurbish RFK Stadium as a temporary home for either a Washington or Northern Virginia team, several sources have been predicting an announcement by mid-August.

Orza declined comment, other than to admit he met with the Expos' player reps. Pat Courtney, a spokesman for Major League Baseball, said only that baseball is still in the midst of evaluating candidates, and that "no conclusions have been reached."

As you all know, I'm an O's fan but I'd switch alliances in a second if a team came to the area. If a team comes, they will be my favorite team but the O's would still hold a special place in my heart even though they haven't done anything in my almost 17 years of life except get a new ballpark and get cheated by a 16 year old at Yankee Stadium.

NO, NO, NO.... NOT THE SENATORS!!!!! ](*,)

If this team's gonna be able to compete... it's got to be market-able.... you your not gonna get a huge market with a name like the "Senator's"...

I understand it's all about history... but their history wasn't that great... and I'd like to have a team and keep it here...

We can start "new" history ;)

Damn, I grew up with the Senators - went to my first game at Griffith Stadium in 1959. That's my history...I reckon the new team will be named for some flying dinosaur so all the kiddies will buy shirts and hats...time for a poll - name the new D.C. baseball team...

Hey man... I respect the History.... but still were in a day in age were the kings of Baseball (most of them) win because they make money..... and I don't want to see Dinosaurs  on the Jersey's either... but I'd rather see Dinosaur's and keep a team in Washington... then see us keep our "Historic" name... and lose the team :(

I mean really... if the Redskins changed there name... would we stop rooting for them???

I really wish they would rename this team the Senators, but I don't think they will. The Senators was a great name and they had some great uniforms. When was the last time an expansion team in any sport put together those two things together? If we let whoever ends up with the team come up with a new name, it will be something stupid like "Wizards"...

"Senators" in first place, "Grays" in second and "Monuments" in third. I think the "Monuments" sounds pretty stupid, but I like "Grays"...

Grays isn't bad... but then it could be looked upon as a not PC thing... and we already got one team with that problem in Washington. :D

How is "Grays" politically incorrect?

As far as re-creating the old Senators, I would go one better than just renaming the team and brining back the old uniforms. When they build the new park, I would make it hte same dimensions as the old Griffith Stadium. It had that cool 30-foot wall in right, and in general was a great baseball part. All this tradition is worth something...

I understand that reference, but I believe the reason it has gained steam as far a potential Washington team name is from the Homestead Grays, a Negro League team that played at Griffith Stadium from the late 1930's throught 1948.

http://www.baseballindc.com/history/photos_hg.asp

"Many baseball historians say the Grays during the 1940's might have been the greatest baseball club ever assembled."

With this in mind, I don't think it really can be considered politically incorrect...
