Exactly. Jackson has gone or over 1000 yards twice in the past three seasons, and Gaffney has topped 1000 yards....never. Jackson also is a deep threat, which Gaffney is not and which we are severely lacking.Skeletor wrote:except that it was a really bad year for Desean and a career year for Gaffney, DJax has a much higher upside, and that's about as much as we're going to see from Gaffney.
Don't get me wrong, I like Gaffney and think he was a really good pickup. But DJax is a game changer
DeSean had a bad year because he spent it complaining about not getting paid instead of running his routes, and telling anyone that would listen how great he is. Where's the upside in that. He might have had two 1000 yards seasons but like you say it's a "what have you done lately"CanesSkins26 wrote:Exactly. And something we hoped we had in Armstrong. Same type of guy. Diamond in the rough. UFA who blossomed. Armstrong for whatever reason just didn't click this year. I can only hope he's working VERY hard because everyone on the team said he's fast as hell and has GREAT hands. I think it's going to come down to him selling his routes better. That is all.Skeletor wrote:Victor Cruz was a bargain, 1,500 yards for a half million dollars.
Gaffney was a good pick up and could be 3rd or 4th on the depth chart if we sign a free agent receiver and Hankerson comes back healthy...
My whole point was DJax is about to get paid and Gaffney out performed him and only cost a Jeremy Jarmon to the Broncos along with a 6th round pick last year and will cost about a third of what Jackson will get.frankcal20 wrote:And something we hoped we had in Armstrong. I agree that Gaffney is one of the best examples of the solid moves our FO has been making. I do think the stats are enlightening. For those who are making qualifications on the stats: how many of you, honestly, would have been able to name the relative production of those two receivers side by side? I wouldn't have before opening the thread but would just have assumed Jackson played better — attitude problem and all.1niksder wrote:DeSean had a bad year because he spent it complaining about not getting paid instead of running his routes, and telling anyone that would listen how great he is. Lately Gaffney has been catching more balls than Jackson.... That's the bottom line. The lin above that says Jackson was being thrown to by Mike Vick while Gaffney was playing catch with Orton and Grossman.
You can say what you want about stats, we can see who earned their money last year. Gaffney is under contract, Jackson is still talking about the one he wants.
Not a team guy... I wouldn't hesitate before I passed. I'd trade him for a QB... almost ANY QBSkeletor wrote:let's put it this way, would any of you hesitate to trade Gaffney for Jackson straight up?
Of course not, in terms of talent and ability. But that doesn't mean Jackson had the best production at WR last year or that he's going to be worth what he gets paid.Skeletor wrote:let's put it this way, would any of you hesitate to trade Gaffney for Jackson straight up?
that is really pointless - who caresSkeletor wrote:let's put it this way, would any of you hesitate to trade Gaffney for Jackson straight up?
Yes, I can say that I would hesitate. I'd rather have the player that fits the scheme, fits the locker room, and that houses the work ethic and overall demeamor of the team.Skeletor wrote:let's put it this way, would any of you hesitate to trade Gaffney for Jackson straight up?

That's all true. But we aren't going to win anything with Jabar Gaffney as our leader in receptions and yards. We need a significant infusion of talent at the wide receiver position or our offense, even with a new qb, is going to suffer. Like Kyle Shanahan recently said, the wide receivers didn't make plays this year.StorminMormon86 wrote:+1Countertrey wrote:I think you are entirely missing the point... I don't care if people want to say, "He'd be a No.3 Receiver on any other team in the NFL", the guy was clutch for us this season and it seemed like the only receiver on our team who was producing on a consistent basis.
Not having a single td pass over 20 yards from the qb to a wide receiver is beyond pathetic, and it's what happens when you lack explosive players at the position, which is what a guy like Jackson brings to the table. If you look at Gaffney's numbers, he only had 1 catch over 40 yards and average 2.9 yards after catch.“We do need to make more plays,” Shanahan said after the South team’s practice for Saturday’s Senior Bowl. “The one thing that hurt us the most was every touchdown pass we made was caught in the end zone. There wasn’t one that was caught outside the end zone and ran in until Week 16 when Helu caught that screen versus Philly. The other one was [Brandon] Banks’ throw to [Moss], who caught it and ran in. Our guys need to do a better job of getting up the field and making some plays after the catch so we get some points on the board by running it in instead of us having to go all the way down the field and trying to throw it in.”
You're missing my point. I was strictly talking about how he was clutch last season. There's no debate...every position on offense (except maybe RB) needs to be upgraded for the 2012 season.CanesSkins26 wrote:Getting a free agent like Jackson or Bowe, or drafting a big play threat like Blackmon is critical for this team if there is any hope of the offense improving. Rex obviously isn't a very good qb, but we also have one of the worst group of wide receivers in the entire NFL.
