I read this article today, it was my first time hearing about it. I'd like to know your opinions on this. Putting aside what appeared to be a fast-track to the NFL, these are situations that every man has to somewhat be afraid of.
I applaud the systems our society has put in place to protect those who cannot protect themselves.... But... These systems are too rigid IMO. It's too easy for a disgruntled person to ruin another persons life with almost zero consequence for doing so.

One mistake and he's felt the repurcussions for years. An absolute shame. In my view, the DA should have used better judgement in this matter. Collins admitted what he did without trying to hide it. The DA SHOULD have looked at the actions of the girls and decided to not push for such serious charges.
I'm saying this as a law-and-order-mean-evil-conservative. I believe we should protect victims -- absolutely. However, there has to be discretion on the part of justice. It's about doing what is right.

Some states have enacted statutes that consider the age difference between the partners. I think that does a better job of upholding the spirit of the law. In my parent's day, kids married a lot earlier. I think my Dad was 19 when he married my mom who was 17 I believe. If they didn't get married, I suppose an overzealous DA could have charged him with a crime. It's a tough situation that should be addressed case by case.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Wrong is wrong and Right is right. This is tough one. In other cultures and societies, a 12 girl is free and clear to have consensual sex and it would be acceptable. I'm talking 3rd world countries, you see.
So this statement only holds true in societies like ours:
I don't know if it's assult or consensual in Collins case. Shoulda, coulda, woulda been more careful. It's so tough: Prom night, alcohol and maybe drugs, physically developed 12 yr old looking like 18 (maybe).... no excuses, he broke the law.
Wow, many guys I knew in high school were 17/18 yrs old who had 14/15 yr old girlfriends.......and yes, having sex. You know what I'm talking about.
So....what's Collins future? Is he a GREAT linebacker? Could he play at the NFL level is given a chance...?

The phrase, sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, is a visceral force that unites virtually all walks of humanity in wanting to bury the man responsible.
