Seahawks fan saying hello
Hi, I'm a Seahawks fan, checking in because you come to our house next week, and I wanted to get some thoughts from you all about the game. Here are my thoughts about the matchup.
SEAHAWKS ADVANTAGES: Our defense vs. your offense. Our defense has been playing really well this year. I haven't had a chance to watch the Redskins this year, so I'm mainly going off stats. It looks like you guys are 30th in rushing... our run defense is playing lights out, so I think your best chance to score will be by relying on your quarterback. Fortunately for us our secondary is also really good. Our one weakness on defense is in the pass rush - we have only 19 sacks this year. Can your quarterback pick apart a talented secondary if given good protection? I think this will be your best chance offensively.
REDSKINS ADVANTAGES: Your defense vs. our offense. Our offense has been absolutely atrocious for most of the year, and from what I understand your defense has been playing very well. Our running game has been improving for the past few games after being among the worst in the league for several seasons, so we will be looking at this game to continue improving. Tarvaris Jackson has also been getting better, but by "getting better" I mean he's gone from terrible to almost mediocre. The matchup that is the most worrisome for us is quarterback pressure - I see that you guys are #1 in sacks, with 31, whereas we are the second-worst team in sacks allowed, with 34, and the worst in quarterback hits allowed, with a whopping 79. I think Jackson will be under siege all day and probably feeling a LOT of heat. Our best offensive hope will probably be to run the ball, but we just lost two starting O-lineman, so that won't be easy either.
So, overall, with our two teams both having good defenses and bad offenses, this game will probably have a lot of back-and-forth three and outs. Our punters will earn their money. When we played the Cleveland Browns earlier this year, we lost 6-3, and it was the lowest-scoring game in Seahawks history - hopefully this game doesn't beat that record! Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this game was tied 0-0 going into halftime. I think home field advantage will give us the edge in this game and we will take it, but that it will be competitive until the end. Stats of course don't tell the whole story, so I'd love to hear a bit about the Redskins from those who have been watching them. Well, here's to an injury free game!

Glad you could join us. Well, this is my take.. I bet our offense is worse than yours!!!!
No disrespect to your team but I think we're pretty much equals in the bum category.
I hope you guys lose by the way.
Here's to no injuries though!

Pretty refreshing to read a sane take from an enemy. You seem right on target with your analysis. I really want to pick the 'Skins in a pool at work which is for $ but was leaning toward Seattle until I read your post. I like our chances to stifle you but from my experience the 12th man will prevent us from taking advantage of what I see as a slight edge for us in personnel.
Looks like a true toss-up to me. I'm thinking it will be a 16-13 kind of game.
Good Luck.
PS - If I were your D coordinator I would stack the box and simply drop 2 guys into underneath after the play fake. Rex will find thier chests with the ball.

Dear CHawks fan,
Don't worry about our D, it isn't near as good as the stats indicate. Our offense has been putrid so most teams back off after getting a 2 or 3 score lead. So our D looks better after the game than they really are.
Yes, they have a ton of sacks, but they never come at an important time in the game. Our D has no idea how to force a punt, so your punter, won't get much work. If there is a critical 3rd down, have no fear your team will pick it up!
You might want to watch out for our rookie Kerrigan, but I'm sure your OL coach has already told your left tackle to hold Orakpo on every play, because the NFL allows this practice. LTs hold him on almost every play and they NEVER get
called.
Don't worry about getting sacks. Buffalo had a total of four in the prior five or six games and had ten when they played us. So expect to get a season high for sacks.
We won't be able to run the ball sui don't worry about that. Rex will move the ball a lot, but he will throw at least one pick (probably 3).
You guys won't even have to resort to amplifying the crowd noise like you normally do (I still have no ideawhy the NFL ley's you get away with that).

If you think your defense won't be able to force a punt, you haven't seen our offense in action. Specifically, the O-line. We have a good running back with Marshawn Lynch, he busts tackles and runs angry, but he often has to break three or four tackles just to get back to the line of scrimmage, and we give up sacks like we're doing it on purpose.
As to the artificial crowd noise, this is a common misunderstanding... a lot of people get the idea that crowd noise is getting amplified or pumped in through speakers, which it isn't. It's that the stadium is built so that crowd noise gets acoustically channeled directly onto the field. I'm glad the NFL lets us do that, because we'd have to tear down the whole stadium and rebuild it otherwise, and it was expensive! The artificial noise rumor was started by the Giants after they got 11 false starts in one game and, in typical Eli Manning style, decided to whine and blame someone else.
"No disrespect to your team but I think we're pretty much equals in the bum category. " Unfortunately, I cannot argue with this. How did you guys get into this position anyway? It was only a few years ago that the 'skins and the 'hawks met each other in the playoffs. In our case an incompetent GM ran our franchise into the ground. I hope you guys can turn it around in the next few seasons, because I hate the Cowboys, and I REALLY hate the Giants, and the Eagles have a dog-torturer quarterback and the fans are douches, so they can go to hell. While I don't have an opinion about the Redskins either way I would love for you to keep your divisionmates out of the playoffs!

We will see about the punts. I'm putting the over and under for CHawks punts at 3.5 snd I'm taking the under!
As far as piped in crowd noise, I have never been there myself and I understand that your stadium is designed to focus the noise on to the field, but I also know that the crowd noise is been accused of being artistically enhanced by way too many people for there not to be something to it.
During one of the Skins/CHawks playoff games, Bram Weinstein (who is unbiased) said he heard "transistor him"the entire game. That means the mics were never turned off.
I'm a firm believer that the "stadium design" helps cover up the fact that the crowd noise is amplified and the stadium design makes it even more effective.

Shortly after the Giants complained, the NFL sent official league monitors to two games, and they didn't find any wrongdoing. I think most players from other teams are just surprised by the power of the 12th man and jump to conclusions. After Marshawn Lynch made his 67 yard TD run against the Saints last year in the playoffs, the crowd celebration was recorded by a nearby seismic detector as a small earthquake! It's just passion for the team. They even retired the number 12 for the fans. Also, it's a copycat league, so if artificial noise was passable, I think lots of other teams would have started doing it. Beyond that I don't know what to tell you.
I lived in the Seattle area for three years (1986 - 1989) and I can attest to the Hawks fan's passion for the team. I have never been to the new stadium, but I went to several games at the Kingdom and it was maddening loud in there. I learned to despise the Broncos when I was there. Hated them as much as I hate the Cowboys. What I remember most about being in the Kingdome was one side of the crowd erupting with "Go" and the other side answering with "Seahawks" and it would be repeated and get louder and louder. The that got me was it was orchestrated. The whole stadium was in unison. It was like the "Let's go Reskins!" chant that starts up and dies out. A guy on one side would hold up a card that said "Go" and the show would begin until the guy put down the card. To me, the fans up there have a diciplined organized way of cheering for their teams. Though it is debated who invented the wave, I don't think that it disputed that the Seahawk fans were the first NFL fans to do it.
No, I have no doubts that they do not artificially enhance the noise in that stadium. I do not believe that Seahawk fans are any louder than Redskin fans, but their orchestration and unity make them sound louder with and stadium design makes it that much louder.
I think that your analysis is fair an accurate. I think that this game comes down to whose offense makes the most mistakes. Neither QB is good, but when Good Rex shows up and plays a whole game, he plays like an all star. He has gotten better with each start since his benching. I am going to predict that good Rex plays the whole game and he doesn't make the costly errors. That will be the difference in the game.
Redskins win a close game despite the crowd noise.

On the noise: remember RFK. Loudest, most imtimidating stadium for oppoents because of Redskin fans' enthusiasm and the old baseball park grand-stand overhangs that bounced the noise back down onto the field.
Maybe the Redskins should move back to RFK...put up a mega-jumbotron in JKC and let sell "overflow" tickets.
Ah...just a dream, but still!

Welch, I have just one regret as a Redskin fan and that is that I never saw a Redskin game at RFK. I grew up in Texas seeing the fans at RFK on TV rocking the house. I dreamed that someday I would move to DC and go to all the Redskin games. My dream came true, I moved to DC and I go to almost all the home games, but never will I have a chance to experience that RFK Redskin experience.
I wrote Bruce Allen a letter asking if they would at least consider a scrimmage against the Ravens at RFK for Fan Appreciation Day. He wrote back and said that they were negotiating with Mayor Gray to do just that.
Yes, a move back to RFK - just a dream, but sometimes dreams come true.

I have been to many games at RFK.... The scene was way different. I was just a kid when they were chanting WE WANT DALLAS!!!! The stadium was rocking and I wasn't there for it but I had gone many times in that era and I am here to tell you that those fans were different. Sections had been around for years and everyone knew each other. I remember getting in trouble for cussing out loud during a bad game by adults that I didn't know but they knew my parents. It was a trip back then. I hope you get to experience a great time.
