The Albert Haynesworth era in New England has come to an end.
In a surprising roster move today, the Patriots have decided to cut Haynesworth, the defensive tackle they acquired in August in a trade with the Washington Redskins.
Ian R. Rapoport of the Boston Herald, who first reported the move, notes that the decision to jettison Haynesworth comes two days after a sideline confrontation with defensive line coach Pepper Johnson.
The sudden end for Haynesworth is reminiscent of the Patriots’ decision last year to trade Randy Moss. The difference, of course, is that Moss had great success in New England before wearing out his welcome. Haynesworth has been nothing but a disappointment for the Patriots.
Now we’ll see whether any other team wants Haynesworth, or if the entire NFL comes to the conclusion that Mike Shanahan and Bill Belichick have both come to: That Haynesworth is more trouble than he’s worth.

Boy, the Redskins made two huge mistakes in back to back years. Signing Haynesworth and trading for McNabb both backfired in spectacular fashion. Just an absolute mess. I don't take much solace that he also flamed out in New England, he is what he is, an extremely talented individual with no desire to make the most of his talents. Same as Donny Mac. It's kind of sickening when you think about it.

How about the fact that we got a draft pick out of it? I definitely take solace in that, in addition to the mere knowledge that Haynesworth was screwing some other team this year.

Yes. This. I want to hear Shanahan lauded on Sportscenter for being smarter than belicheck and getting a draft pick out of him for a big pile of shi. . . nothing! Mike was excoriated (I'm not looking up the spelling) for the whole Fat A$$ episode and in the end he was CLEARLY right. Oh, but talking about that wouldn't be piling on the redskins and dan snyder, so never f-ing mind.
(/sigh)
I know he got a pretty good zip on the ball. He has a quick release. . . once I seen a coupla' throws, I was just like 'Yeah, he's that dude.'"
Just for the extra laughs. Anyone remember this piece by Michael Lombardi when the Pats acquired Haynesworth?
Haynesworth is exactly what Patriots defense needs by Michael Lombardi
New England is the perfect environment for Albert Haynesworth. I love this acquisition by Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
Is Haynesworth difficult? Without question. But surround him with the right teammates, like the strong leaders in the Patriots locker room, and he will comply. Like most players, Haynesworth needs to be led, he needs to be coached and he needs to be put in the best possible position to succeed. And this is what New England does better than any other organization in the league.
I know Haynesworth has lazy tendencies. I know he does not play hard all the time. But when he does, he is a game changer. He is a player everyone fears, because never can one offensive lineman handle him. The Patriots get a motivated Haynesworth, who will be out to prove his naysayers wrong -- especially Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. Haynesworth and Shanahan got off on the wrong foot and it went from bad to worse quickly and is the reason why he is now in New England. You can bet Haynesworth is already eyeballing the Patriots-Redskins game in D.C. in Week 14.
The Patriots have a good defense, but it struggles when it can't play its own style. The shocking loss to the lowly Browns in 2010 is a perfect example. The Browns were a terrible team when put in third down and long, but excelled in third and short. So when playing Cleveland, defenses knew they needed to create negative plays to gain control of the game. But the Patriots could not do this. They allowed the Browns to always be in third and short, which they were able to convert and keep the ball away from Tom Brady and the explosive offense. The Pats ranked dead last in the league on third-down conversions and they entered the offseason with the goal of trying to find players who could be disruptive.
Enter Haynesworth. When he is on the field, he has to be doubled. With Vince Wilfork lining up next to him, it spells more than trouble for opposing offensive lines. The Patriots now have two power players who will be impossible for linemen to handle. Watch the negative plays pile up for the Patriots this season.

I usually like Lombardi. Sucks to be him. Not only did he call the Haynesworth trade wrong, but somewhere up there he claims that the Pats have a good defense. I think he's dead wrong when he claims that the Pats have a strong locker room. In fact, that seems to me to be the largest cause of their recent demise, they just don't seem to as many leaders as they used to.

Yeah, like you said, it'll never happen. No one is smarter than Belichick and even though Shanahan was widely considered a "genius" (a label I hate for coaches, but that's another topic), as soon as he got to Washington he became pedestrian.

not really true - Mike has made some progress
this franchise was in a terrible situation with no real plan and ZERO NFL management for over 10 years
Mike & Bruce are not renowned NFL managers but they have made some progress
Mike's 'coaching' has some work to do but he's certainly cleaned things up a lot here - the country club atmosphere has gone
these last 8 games and the additions through free agency and the 2012 draft are going to be VERY telling
'pedestrian' is a little harsh
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant he became pedestrian in the eyes of the football media. Not in reality.
