How long will it take to rebuild the Redskins?

Post by Skinsfan55 »

How long will it take for the Redskins to be a competitive football team? Shanahan has had almost two seasons. There are some good pieces on the team but:

-There is no solution at quarterback
-The offensive line is a mess
-There is no answer at tailback
-There are few weapons in the passing game
-The defensive line is mediocre
-Our corner backs are mediocre

Simply put, we're not seeing a lot of progress with the Redskins. I heard a commentator say "If Shanahan doesn't work, what does Snyder do? He's tried veteran coaches, college coaches, Joe Gibbs, untested coordinators, and now Shanahan. What else can he do?"

We're looking like a few years off, sure, Landry, Orakpo, Kerrigan, and Williams look like up and comers but it's not enough. How long will this rebuild take?
"Guess [Ryan Kerrigan] really does have a good motor. And is relentless. And never quits on a play. And just keeps coming. And probably eats Wheaties and drinks Apple Pie smoothies and shaves with Valvoline." -Dan Steinberg DC Sports Bog

2 years. I know we're losing right now but it's not as bad as U make it seem. It's fine to be emotional during a beatdown but you're exaggerating at some positions. #shrug

MORE THAN five years.

Honestly it might take another two decades. Everything needs to be changed from the GM down to the water boys and the AV staff. There is NOTHING worth keeping on that team right now.

I take that back there might be two players worth keeping.... Orakpo and Kerrigan. Let them fight it out for one of the OLB jobs and trade the other for something worthwhile.

Yep.

And here we go with the over-reactions. Nothing work keeping? What about Orakpo and Kerrigan? Good lord. (Btw...nice edit).

Did anyone actually expect this team to be any good this year with the Walking Turnover or John Beck at QB? If so, did you remember to take your medications before thinking that?

This team was a disaster under Zorn. Disasters take time to fix.

They might be the only two players of value, and I only see a need for ONE of them. They're both MAJOR liabilities in pass coverage so we need an OLB who can cover on the other side from whichever one is kept.

I still haven't heard the coaching staff or GM or Owner come out and say they're in a rebuilding mode. Until I do, I expect this team to be a contender.

This team has been a disaster since 1992. Nothing short of a complete and total enema is going to change that.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see this.

People . . . we are an 8-8 team this year. We will probably have to fight to make it to 8-8. This was predicted many times over by Skins fans much more knowledgeable than me during the offseason.

The Shanaplan is in motion. If we are 6-10 again this year, then I'll admit we have a serious problem. For now, though, these mini ups and downs are just going to be part of the journey.

8-8? 6-10? This team will be lucky to make it to 4-12.

It's going to take probably 3 years for us to be a good team consistently. We need to address the O and D lines, and the CB position in the next couple of drafts. I want Hall gone... I don't care about his interceptions.. he gets burned and can't cover. His tackling has slightly improved, but I'm tired of seeing him get torched. Makes me sick to my stomach... that's prolly why Fletch was on the sideline yackin so much. He was watching DHall on the jumbotron after Steve Smith raped him.

I need to see more of Beck to determine whether we need to draft a QB in the first round next year. If Beck stumbles throughout this season, I beg we get a good one. All other positions afterwards.

Well Beck did what he needed to do this game. Our overrated defense lost this one to the Panthers. We are definitely 7-9 at best this season. Hopefully 2 more years will put us back in the hunt.

QB: Beck played very well today and looks like a solid option for a while at QB and i wouldn't rule out him becoming the next Fitzpatrick. should be able to at least hold down the fort while we draft and groom our next prospective franchise QB.

OL: did an ok job considering all the starters that were out. overall still has a way to go for sure but considering that the OL was nonexistent 2 years ago, making good progress there.

RB: the RBs are good in this scheme and do great when the OL gives them a chance.

PASSING GAME WEAPONS: that's definitely one of our biggest weaknesses. we need to get better there; hopefully some of the young guys can develop into solid options. i don't understand why Gaffney is out there; he's ok but not good enough to warrant interfering with letting a younger guy develop. either way, the fact that our new management hasn't put many resources into upgrading this area of the roster yet shows they know what they're doing; WR is the most overvalued position in football and bad teams don't get better by upgrading at WR.

DL: definitely very average, but Jenkins looked like he could be a major upgrade before we lost him for the season with the injury. definitely significantly improved from last year and we will keep adding pieces Cofield seems OKish at NT but we still need a beast there; i don't think there was really one available in the draft or FA this year so we did the best we could in the meantime and will keep looking to upgrade it.

CB: Hall is one of the most overrated players in the league and is terrible in coverage; definitely need better players there if we want to run a lot of the big-blitz stuff.

overall we are definitely improving; there's only so much you can do in each offseason and when Shanahan inherited the team, he had what, at least 40 lousy-to-averageish players to progressively replace/upgrade?

we're not very good yet but i think they're concentrating on the right things and slowly but steadily improving the roster.

Yup... Other than believing that next year sees a concentration on offense, including, hopefully QB... I think we'll see significant improvement next year.

DCD, I think your analysis is excellent. This team clearly is better than last year and headed in the right directions. The Skins came out the gate and surprised folks and now they are settling into what they really are - an average team at best, but better than last year with another off season away from filling some important holes.

The only question I have for this team is - Can Mike and Kyle co-exist? Did Houston run the stretch running game when Kyle was there? It seems that Kyle can't get in sync with his play calling when the stretch running is working. It was working against Carolina, but yet we had the same results. The offense can't seem to get going unless it is passing more than running. My understanding is Kyle calls plays by feel, if he is forced to call run plays when his mind says pass, then he stumbles and can't get into a rhythm.

Um, no it won't.
There is no way we win only one of the rest of our remaining games R_F. None whatsoever.

EDIT: I say 3 years, just to give us that extra year of cushion to polish everything once it's in place. By the by, dcd - solid summary of our respective parts. I concur in full.

You're right. They probably won't even win one the way they've played the last two weeks. They are downright unwatchable at this point.

OK! - thanks CLL - I went with 1 more year

geez Sf55 - what else is new with the negativity stuff

we have improved a lot since 2009 AND we're NOT near as bad as you're trying to make it out to be

Beck actually surprised me a little today - he's not too bad at all

c'mon man
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Well, you have to figure at least 2 years beyond this season, likely three. We are going to have to draft a qb in this draft and you're probably looking at another mediocre year next year with the rookie sitting most of the season, an up-and-down year his first year as starter, and hopefully we didn't botch the pick/development and he is ready for a good season his third year. Expecting anything less than that just isn't realistic considering our qb situation.

Until Shanahan drafts his franchise QB this team won't be a real contender. Hopefully that QB is drafted in next years draft. We still need help in the secondary, o-line, and receiving corps.

First off we got to draft a franchise QB, then add maybe 2 more years to build an offense around him.

On the subject of QB's, you gotta wonder which god looks after the Colts , I mean they draft probably the best player ever to play the position, then when he starts to show signs of age and fraility , they suffer one year of pain and will seemingly be able to draft their next franchise QB :)

The Colts did have a long stretch between Jonny U and Peyton. Not as long a our stretch between Sonny and whoever we eventually draft.

Think about that. In almost 80 years this team had only had two franchise QBs and we had to trade for one of those.

Exactly what I was thinking Chris. When we start 3-1 we all hope we're taking a shortcut to good. But that we aren't doesn't undo we've made significant strides the last two years.

Before a QB, we need to acquire some WR's that can catch the freakin' ball.

We are not going to win only one more game this season. I'm hoping (and this is being very optimistic) for a 10-6 season. At worst I hope we'll go 7-9. I just don't want to finish last.

we need to see the quality of coaching, practicing and playing continue as it has been here recently no matter what the win loss record is

The Shanaplan has resulted in this franchise going through significant changes in attitude and execution
- from where we were in 2009 to where we are now is very encouraging

we are not as good or as bad as some here think and I still think that we need only 1 more draft and off season to see a consistently competitive product on the field

we are not far off - we've come a long way from the disaster that was this franchise from the owner down in 2009

The Shanaplan will deliver - 2012 will see this franchise in the playoffs
