Redskins reportedly work out six players

Post by andyjens89 »

The Washington Redskins held workouts for six unemployed players, including running back Laurence Maroney, according to profootballscout.com’s Aaron Wilson.

Also working out for the Redskins were defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer (who spent time with the 49ers, Seahawks and Panthers), defensive end Everette Brown (Carolina), tight end Richard Quinn (Denver) and offensive linemen Nevin McCaskill (New York Jets, Green Bay) and Jonathan Compas (Tampa Bay).

Maroney and Balmer were first round picks, while Brown and Quinn were second rounders. Could be some potential, but I don't think any signings are imminent. Most likely trying some guys out in case of injury.

If a guy or two get's hurt, you've had a player in here and if he's a fit and available, you know what you've got. Keep in mind that we're in a long stretch here and there is more likely to be injuries.

Hightower is already nursing a shoulder injury. Torain is injury prone. Helu is a rookie.

Honestly, working out vet RBs is a smart move considering -- and now is the time to do it with the bye. Everything is nice now, but you always have to be prepared for the unknowns -- and considering that there is a probablility that Hightower and Torain could go down, you have to at least do some due diligence at the position.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Maroney got arrested with 5 other guys in a car, some smoking weed, at least one a felon carrying a gun.

The other 5 guys didn't happen to be named Wilson, Balmer, Brown, Quinn and McCaskill did they? :)

Updating their emergency list, teams hold these workouts every Tuesday. The Skins didn't bring anyone in the last few weeks, but will be doing this on and off all season.

So when a team works out players, do they play them with the rest of the team, or do they just run drills, like the rookie combine?

I listened to Doc talk about this subject when we were interested in Tatupu. A major part of this process is the physical. Doc Walker said that the physical can take more than one day because of the wait for test results, so by getting the physicals done now, that process is speeded up.

Doc didn't talk about what kind of drills, but I think that you are in the ball park when you say combine type of drills.

Another big major part is the interview. Questions about character and football - these is much like inteviewing potential draft choices except you have a body of professional work to go by.

Since these drills are usuall done on Tuesdays, the players' day off, it is not with the team, but there may be cases where a player or two comes to the facilities on their day off and volunteers to catch for a QB or throw to a WR especially if the guy being looked at is a friend of someone on the team (I am specualting with this).
