What to do with Rex vs Giants

Post by frankcal20 »

Put yourself in the shoes of the Shanahan’s (Mike and Kyle) as the Redskins prep for the Giants this Sunday at Fed Ex Field. The season opener with Rex Grossman under center.

What are you going to see from New York defensive coordinator Perry Fewell? Pressure, some unique looks, plus a front four that can allow the Giants to play coverage and still get to the QB in 3rd down passing situations. Thinking that way, what is your counter, your adjustments and how do you build your game plan to put Grossman in a position to produce? Here’s what I would do…

Rex Grossman ICONWant to see Grossman produce? Give him a game plan that is loaded with inside breaking routes.

- Deep shot in the first three plays of the game. I understand the need to run the inside and outside zone with RB Tim Hightower (something we will see on Sunday), but I am going to test the top of the defense early. And it’s most likely going to be a double-move with WR Santana Moss.

-Inside breaking routes. That’s where Rex is at his best. But keep it simple. Run the dig (square-in), slant, Hi-Lo crossers, the option route, curl, etc. Short to intermediate throws that break back to the middle of the field. No need to see Grossman trying to throw the deep out.

- Use the boot and sprint game. Last thing I want to see is Grossman having to retreat from pressure and throw the ball off of his back foot. Get him out of the pocket with the swap boot action (counter action in the backfield) and use the basic curl-flat combo in the sprint out pass.

- Screens. Easiest way to slow down pressure is by incorporating the screen game into the call sheet. That will get those Giants’ DEs to slow their rush and if you catch New York in a blitz, we are talking about a big play.

-Manageable third down situations. We can say this for any starting QB in the league, but does anyone want to see Rex facing 3rd and 11-plus on a consistent basis? Move the ball in early down and distance situations and give him something to work with. The playbook has multiple options on 3rd and 3-6. After that? The playbook shrinks—drastically.

- Use three and even four WR personnel packages. The Giants have had injuries at the CB position. Find out where they are talent wise on the depth chart. Basically, wear them down.

- Give him some confidence through the play calling. No QB wants to be handcuffed in the huddle. The ‘Skins need to give him some opportunities to play aggressive and challenge the Giants. The early deep shot like I talked about above, vertical play action concepts and the opportunity to check to a route down the field when he sees press-coverage.

I’ll be honest here…when training camp opened in D.C. I was sure this was John Beck’s job. But with Grossman taking the snaps this Sunday, you have to script a game plan that gives him an opportunity to produce like a No.1.

I like the sound of this. Bunch formations. Anything that will confuse the defense who hasn't played much together.

I know everyone is concerned about our QB situation. Don't be. We will be winning games this year by running the ball. Expect a heavy dose of running Sunday.

I'm sorry but until these two QB's prove me wrong I will be very concerned. The problem this Sunday is which Grossman is going to show up?

Just protect him because we know if Rex gets hit the ball is coming out. Solid playcalling will also help as the original post said.

I don't think the QB situation is as bad as a lot think or some think it will be. No doubt they aren't elite QB's, but they still can get the job done. Both look comfortable and both can run the offense.

The only thing I worry about with Rex is his mobility and his consistency. Rex has shown he can be a good QB, problem is that every other week.

Teams are going to be stacking the box against us until the passing game is able to make plays consistently down the field.

Moss or Hankerson.

AAA is the team's best deep threat. His performance last year ess on par with Desean Jackason's (don't believe mw look it up - DJ was only slightly better)

With the G-string's injuries at LB and DB, that play where Rex rolls right after a fake to HT and then throws back accepts the field to the TE, should be WIDE OPEN!

Every NFL Coach thinks this, none of them think Grossman can beat them, and especially not with the talent around him to throw to. The Giants and every other team is going to stack the box with 8 or 9 in it and make Rex beat them. FYI Tim Hightower has never proven himself to be a durable every down back in this league, no one knows if he can handle a heavy work load. Plus he doesn't exactly hold onto the football very well, (i.e.)he has fumbling issues.

FYI not being able to decide who to cut and keeping EIGHT wide outs is pretty stacked I think he will have people to thro to.. Not to mention 2 great TE . Of course you hate cooooooley and Davis but we got some players that can catch you'll see Sunday

It takes a few PA plays to get teams to stop stacking the box. We will run, lots of running. That is my prediction. I'm sure coaches knew this, however coaches also knew Green Bay were going to throw all the time. I also don't think at this point NY can afford to stack the box.

I disagree... If I'm playing Washington, I have seen a very disciplined and effective run game, that bloodied the noses of two very stout run defenses in preseason, but a considerably less efficient pass game. I will hedge on the side of stopping the run, and forcing Washington to try to MAKE ME defend the pass... in other words, I'm stacking the box until forced to do otherwise.

That's MY prediction. My major concern all along has been... "Can our passing game prevent teams from stacking the box?" I still don't have a feel for that. The passing game doesn't have to be great... just "good enough" to make stacking the box too risky to do.

Isn't this the type of route that Grossman threw his preseason pick on?

I just don't know if Mike & Kyle will be able to commit to running the ball. I know Mike always had great running teams in Denver, but his style together with Kyle's as the OC, nothing really tells me that they will commit (25-30 carries) to the run game. If we do, we should have an opportunity to win. If our coaches "force the pass" it could be a long day.

I think we'll have more runs then pass attempts

We are going to do whatever it takes - this is going to be about the 'now', NOT what happened last year or what happened with other franchises OR what happened during the pre season

We are going to see a VERY determined effort from our guys to win this game

AND it is only THIS game, THIS week, all season long

we are not a great offense or defense yet but the process has started

We start off our season with a win AND it's against the giants :D

GO REDSKINS - BEAT THE GIANTS

We are still most likely going 8-8 or 9-7 at best
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

This is it. It makes what Portis did in Gibbs' first year VERY impreesive - he got all his yards the "hard way" because we could not make defenses honor our passing game.
