Graham Gano

Post by DarthMonk »

12 years ago we signed a guy with a HUGE leg. He played one game for us. He made 2 PATs and missed 2 FGs - both from over 50 yards. We waived him. The Eagles picked him up. He's been to 4 Pro Bowls, made the All-Decade team, and now holds the NFL record for most points in a decade (1,114). His name is David Akers.

I say all this because we now have a guy with a HUGE leg (yeah, I know he just left a 47 yarder short). He has missed a few but I do not want to lose him.

Here is something I've noticed. Gano makes his move for the ball AS IT IS SNAPPED. Therefore, everything has to be perfect. I notice the ball is STILL SPINNING in Hunter-the-Punter-the-holder's hand as Gano's foot is striking it. This is a recipe for misses. Chip Low-driller aka Chip Pole-killer did the same thing. The only time he was REAL good was when we had the best holder in history.

Watch Akers. He waits half a beat before starting his approach. Does anyone have a hotline to our special teams coach? I'm convinced Gano has an all-pro leg and a strong mind. He needs to wait half a beat and hit it like a wedge from 55 yards in.

It looked to me like he got under that one a bit. I suspected that both from its distance and its trajectory.

He definitely has the leg. His game-winner would have been good from 56 yards out, if not more. He's put plenty of kickoffs into the endzone.

I hope we keep him.

HEY! He's 6th in the NFL in KO distance at 66.8 and his hangtime is great. I really want to see a change in the instant approach on FGs. I think accuracy would increase markedly.

May be so but we don't need to let him go because of bad coaching and a few misses.

Also, a similar comment might have been made the day before we waived Akers.

I meant that he is the least of the teams concerns and should be kept so they can focus on other areas like o line...

It was a bad snap and Hunter barely got the ball set before it was kicked. I think thst added to the mis-hit.

This is what I'm talking about. He moves AT THE SNAP. Therefore everything has to be perfect. Low-Driller aka Pole-Killer did the same thing.

PLEASE WAIT HALF A BEAT BEFORE APPROACH.

Watch the game and see if you notice this. Watch other kickers.

Gano has shortened his approach from 3 steps to 2. He waits for the holder to catch the ball before he starts his approach, unlike last year. Things are smoother in the entire unit. No one, most of all him, looks hurried. He hit from 48 against the Ravens and it looked like a 3/4 wedge from 90 yards. I don't think he has missed a kick yet.

The proof will be in the real games. I think he's gonna have a very good year.

I agree. Give him this year at least. Provided he shows at least some improvement, keep him as the presumed starter going into next year.
