The Washington Redskins haven't won the NFC East since 1999. A confident Rex Grossman believes that drought will come to an end this season.
The defending division champion Philadelphia Eagles have grabbed the offseason headlines with their free-agent spending spree, which included CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DT Cullen Jenkins and DE Jason Babin, and the talented Dallas Cowboys are a candidate to rebound with new coach Jason Garrett and a healthy Tony Romo at quarterback. The New York Giants won the division as recently as 2008 and are the last NFC East team to win the Super Bowl.
But Grossman says the team no one is talking about will come out on top.
"We're fine being the sleepers right now," Grossman said Tuesday in an interview with Comcast SportsNet. "You know, we're just waiting in the wings, ready to take over the NFC East.
"Nobody's talking about us. That's right where we want to be. You look at us from top to bottom out here, there's a bunch of great players. And we don't need people saying we're the best right now, but when it's all said and done, I really feel like this team's gonna win the East."
Grossman, who is listed at No. 1 on the Redskins' depth chart at the quarterback position, was the starter for the Chicago Bears when they played in the Super Bowl in the 2006 season. He says the Redskins' offensive talent is better than the offense he led in Chicago.
"I look around, this offense from top to bottom is better than that offense I had in Chicago," Grossman said. "The defense is gonna make a ton of strides this year. I know they are. It's gonna be fun. I know we're gonna be a good team."
John Beck also has a chance to start at quarterback this season, but a groin injury has slowed him so far in training camp. Coach Mike Shanahan had praised Beck in April and the quarterback said during the lockout that he was approaching the season like he was the team's starter.
The Redskins finished 6-10 last season, their first under Shanahan. Their last winning season was in 2007 when the team made the playoffs as a wild card under former coach Joe Gibbs.
The Redskins have undergone a transformation this offseason. Gone are Donovan McNabb, Albert Haynesworth and Clinton Portis. And several players have been added to the roster through free agency and trades.
Donte' Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney were added to the receiver corps and top wideout Santana Moss was re-signed.
In the backfield, Tim Hightower was acquired in a trade with Arizona and can give Ryan Torain a break on third down and step in if Torain, who missed four games in 2010 with a hamstring injury, gets hurt again.
On defense, ex-Giant Barry Cofield is an upgrade at nose tackle, the position Haynesworth refused to play. The Redskins also improved at defensive end, signing ex-Cowboy Stephen Bowen.
Cornerback Josh Wilson and safety O.J. Atogwe were added to strengthen the secondary.

I like how controversial this statement was yesterday. Like Rex should come out and say, "Well to be honest, I think we'll probably only win one or two games this season."

Was he paid to say this? This was just an attempt to kiss up to the coaching staff and help his chances -- because if he really believes this he is even dumber than he looks. He just wants to make sure the coaching staff knows he has bought into the direction of the team.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

What the hell did he say that he shouldn't have. I hope he really believes what he said and even if he doesn't, what is wrong with him trying to get his teammates to believe it is possible.
And it is possible. It happens almost every year a team goes from worst to first in their division. Especially of their division has a many questions as the nfc east does. The Egirls are the only team that don't have huge questions and if they lose Vick they are DONE! That nut bag V Young would only last a few games before being benched and them he might try to kill himself.

Or he could have said...
This is a quote from Brian Orakpo
“It’s our goal to reach that Super Bowl,” ... “That’s every team’s goal. That’s our goal especially. We went 6-10 and we had our ups and we had our downs, but we were in a lot of games last year and we’ve just got to be more consistent. That’s one thing we’re preaching this year.”

Honestly, I don't want to hear anything from Rex and/or Beck. Beck has done nothing in the NFL and Rex has had a very mediocre eight-year career. Win the starting job, then win some games, and THEN talk.

He was commenting on the team not himself...
Plus he got everyone to stop talking about Beck as the starter, he might not play worth a damn but he ain't stupid

I like what Rex did and I think we are way underrated. I see nothing but FAIL for the Eagles. They have always stayed away from the big names and went with youth. It's like we swap places, like one of those corny movies where the two guys say they wish they were the other guy and they get struck by lightening at that very second. That's the great thing about the NFL, you just don't know. But I love the confidence and it just seems different this year.

Go ahead Rex. He only threw 7 touchdowns in three games last year. His worst game was versus Jacksonville and it was also his only win.
I say it was HIS only win since I know the losses vs. Dallas (where he had four touchdowns, two INT's and threw for over 300 yards) and New York (where he had two touchdowns, one INT, threw for over 300 yards and completed 59% of his passes) will be blamed on him.
Never mind we had the worst defense in Football and lost to Dallas 33-30 and New York 17-14, nope those were clearly Rex's fault.
Go get 'em Rex; prove the haters wrong.

I concur regarding the EGirls. We tried buying dream teams. How'd that work out? Major expectations make minor setbacks into hysterical response inducing calamities. Without Vick, they probably are hosed. I would love to see the media turn on them like a pack of hyenas. What a relief if someone else can be the whipping boy.
I am not afraid to believe. We got better this year. We can do it. Go Rex.

The difference is that the Eagles didn't buy a dream team as you called it. They built their team through the draft and by developing their players, and our using free agency to supplement that. What we tried to do was build through free agency. It's apples and oranges.
Will it work? Who knows, they still have some issues on the oline and at linebacker. But what they are doing now is not comparable in any real way to how we tried to put together teams in the past.

True. I just think its odd to have a player that doesn't have a starting job yet talking about winning a division.
I can see that as one way to go. "Well, I'm focused on winning this starting job first. Then week 1. Then week 2. And so on. Ask me again if we're in the running in October." That'd be fine.
But it's just one way to look at it. I get that some people would prefer the deflection approach. What I don't get is why it's a big deal if Rex takes the "I want to achieve great things" approach. It's not like he's saying he's going to win the Superbowl, set all the records, and not throw an INT this year. Saying that the team will win the NFC East is an achievable — if unlikely — goal.

Really?
Well let's use last year's "odds on favorites" to win the superbowl as an example then. The pies built their team through the draft and added all the window dressing, yet matched our record. Hmmm...
Go Rex
Go Skins
Doom on you, opponents.
