We know that they will keep 4 inside backers. It was thought that Robert would compete and possibly compete for one of those spots. Why release him so early? Injury settlement? Gonna sign Tatupu? That seems to leaves Rocky, Perry, Zo and Horatio (formerly known as H.B. Prince). Is there a rookie that has been impressive?

From what he said on twitter, he was 100% healthy. I heard that he had gained a fair amount of weight though, so maybe that was part of the problem? I definitely think this is a sign Tatupu could be coming to D.C, but I don't want to say that's true because I certainly don't know.

Henson DOES wear Mr. Tatupu's number...

The Redskins have dropped out of the bidding for free agent LB Lofa Tatupu.
The Skins had him in for a visit Thursday, but the Washington Times reports that the re-signing of Rocky McIntosh "precludes" a deal with Tatupu. Tatupu has drawn minimal interest and may have to settle for a minimum contract.

Being he's expected to receive league minimum or a small contract, I forget the exact wording and the Redskins still have two spots (I think) left on the roster. Mix that with the 18 million under the cap, one LB less, I don't know if I'd be too inclined to believe the WT.

I was listening to Dcc Walker on ESPN 980 (local DC) on Thursday. He responded to a question asking why would Tatupu come in when we signed Rocky? Doc said that just because Tatupu is visiting doesn't mean we will sign him or plan to sign him. He added often if there is mutual interest, a player will be brought in to take a physical. That way if a need for an ILB comes later, such a player would be reay to step on the field immediately.

So there could be validity in what the times, is saying, but I hope not. Tatupu at, or around, the vet minium? Go for it and the best four stay.

So if he's going to settle for a minimum contract, how is it "bidding?"

Everything but the total dollar amount--guarantees, incentives, and particularly how he'd be used. In the Skins' case, Tatupu would be a rotation player at best in a system that will exaggerate his inability to shed blocks (he's probably worse at this than Rocky). It's a bad fit on both sides.

This idea that the Skins can go into the season with only one ILB with meaningful positive experience in the system is a disaster in the making, and filling gaps with veteran castoffs who weren't good fits in the first place seems bizarre beyond comprehension.

This "idea" is a lot safer than the idea of going into a season with only one QB with meaningful, kinda positive experience.

disaster in the making?

Last year's defense was disasterous made. Going into this season with one ILB with positive experience in the system is hardly a disaster with this defense with the additions of Cofield, Bowen, Kerrigan, Jenkins, Atogwe and Wilson. Also, you might not have noticed that Anthony Bryant cannot be pushed around like Kemoeatu.

one ILB with meaningful positive experience

Are you saying that Rocky's experience wasn't meaningful and positive?

Rocky learned that he positively needed to get his behind back in camp and learn his gap assignments and quit thinking that he is not appreciated. Now, that is meaningful for Rocky to have a better season this year.
