AAA will definitely be back and Hankerson may start his rookie season, from there the Redskins are a mystery at WR.

Some in the media say they will go out and sign a wide out in free agency, well if they do that they've filled 3 slots. I wouldn't mind and hope they resign Tana, but that still leaves at least 3 slots to be filled. The draft provided a look to the future, with Hankerson and Paul lining up outside and Robinson should be a good slot receiver. That's the future what about 2011?

Paul was a pretty good return guy in college but also plays on the cover units... What does that say about Banks who's still not 100% after running into the blade of a knife and doesn't/can't play on cover units.
Banks may have a better shot at keeping a roster spot than Williams and Kelly or may battle Austin for the last slot.

Will they keep 6 or will they keep 7.

I think they'll bring in a free agent and bring back Moss, I think all three rookies make the team (Robinson to the PS, unless rosters are expanded due to the lockout) and Williams and Kelly won't.

Then there is Austin and a possibly improved Kelly to look at in camp.

I think that Mike is shopping Banks right now to get the best value. I don't see Mike outright releasing Brandon until he has to, so I expect to see Banks traded between now and the end of training camp even if he out returns the other guys in other words he will be showcased.

Looks Like I might be adjusting my "who stay, who goes, who comes back" sooner than I thought. Perhaps, Kelly got with a route running guru over the off season. The guy has the height, the hands and and now run routes. He has had a year to rest his body. If he gets hurt now, it just isn't meant to be for him, for us.

Banks on the bubble?
Brandon Banks became a fan favorite last year when he burst onto the scene as an explosive kick returner. Now he may be fighting for one of the 53 spots on the final roster.

If he is going to make the team, improving his skills as a receiver will go a long way towards that goal. At 5-feet-7 he needs to do everything right.

Banks is giving it his best go. As he runs routes you can see him focusing on making the cuts right when he is supposed to. If Banks isn't exactly where he is supposed to be, the quarterback will never find him.

Banks is also looking the ball into his hands, a fundamental that many overlook.

You can't take anything for granted when your team drafts three players at your position. It appears that Banks is giving it his best shot.

Paul looks the part
Niles Paul looks the part of an NFL receiver out there.

That sounds kind of dumb because, well, he is one. But not everyone out there looks the part.

Paul has that athletic smoothness that makes running and catching almost effortless. He just jumped in front of a defensive back to grab a John Beck pass near the sideline. Good elevation, good form. A natural.

Not sure how much he will play this year but he could be a good one

Banks loves being the underdog

Brandon Banks defied the odds last year, as he played in 13 NFL games after working his way onto the Redskins roster as a 5-foot-7, 150-pound rookie free agent.

He bucked the percentages even further when he became one of the team’s few true game-breakers, as he returned 38 punts for an average of 11.3 yards and 46 kickoffs at 25.1 a pop. He scored a touchdown on a kickoff return and had a couple of electrifying punt returns for scores called back by penalties.

Now, Banks again is an underdog. The team drafted three wide receivers, including two with return skills. Despite his performance as a rookie, a spot on this year’s roster is by no means assured.

Banks said he enjoys the competition for a roster spot.


“A little more pressure and a little more of a chip on my shoulder -- I play better as a person who is underestimated. I love it,” he said.


Banks’ performance tailed off toward the end of the year. He suffered a knee injury in the Week 8 game in Detroit and had arthroscopic surgery soon after that. The Redskins’ bye week followed, and Banks was back on the field the next time the team played. Although that earned him accolades for toughness, he still is suffering from some of the effects of the injury. On Tuesday, he couldn’t take all of the receiver reps during practice, and on Wednesday he sat out practice altogether.

“It’s a little bit sore,” he said of the knee. While he worked on rehabbing it, he was careful not to reinjure it. “I hadn’t really let loose like I have out here,” he said.

Receivers coach Keenan McCardell is not concerned. “I think he’s healthy right now,” he said. “You can see the suddenness; you can see his speed.”

The knee is not the only injury Banks has had to deal with lately. He spent a week in the hospital after a stabbing incident in February. A tube had to be inserted into one of his lungs, which had collapsed. He said he suffers no ill effects from the incident.

One way to increase the chances of making the roster would be to be able to contribute as a wide receiver, his listed position. On a 53-man roster, it is hard to justify keeping a player who is just a return specialist, no matter how good he is. Banks played just 15 snaps at receiver last year, and he wants to do more.

“I want to contribute on the offensive side of the ball and put points on the board so we can win,” he said.

He said that he put on 10 pounds over the off-season in an effort to improve his strength and durability. Banks doesn’t want to pack much more than that onto his 5-7 frame, as it could cost him his primary asset, his speed.

Banks is not concerned that people are saying the odds are against him. He said he relishes the role of being the underdog.

“I love it,” he said. “I love reading bad things about me.”

Moss, Armstrong, and Hankerson have spots, that leaves three spots for the other eleven receivers to battle for.

Johnson, Price, and Williams aren't going to last long, Austin, Robinson and Paul could land on the practice squad leaving six Kelly, Stallworth, Banks, Stokley, and Gaffney competing for those three spots.

Austin, Banks, and Paul will also compete for the return duties bring the number of WR slots down to two. Again I'll guess Banks is the odd man out and the loser between Austin and Paul landing on the PS. Gaffney and Kelly will battle for the 5th spot. If they keep seven Stokley and Stallworth will have a shot.

So the WR corps. will look like this:

OK 1Nik, this time around, I am going to have to side with you about leaving Banks off. My reasons are below.

With the addition of Stallworth and Gaffney, draftees Hankerson, Paul and Robinson, the re-signing of Moss and the emergence of Armstrong last year, Banks will be hard pressed to remain on this team even before the pre-season games are played. Then there is Austin and a possibly improved Kelly to look at in camp.

I think that Mike is shopping Banks right now to get the best value. I don't see Mike outright releasing Brandon until he has to, so I expect to see Banks traded between now and the end of training camp even if he out returns the other guys in other words he will be showcased.

I come to this conclusion because:

1.AA - Starter
2.Moss - Starter
3. Hankerson - Will start later in the season - Doubt he will learn the O and route running for opening day start.
4. Gaffney - Not a lock - must impress - height helps
4. Stalworth - Will push Gaffney and may make Gaffney expendable
(Either Gaffney or Stalworth will start opening day - one might not make the team)
5. Paul - An all around special teams guy and KOR guy
6. Aldrick Robinson - I think that he is the X factor Punt Returner - hasn't returned punts but received high grades in open field running


Kelly - I don't think he has enough to make the squad even when healthy.
Austin - My big question mark. I suspect that he has been working hard this offseason. He is a candidate to showcase in preseason to trade for a draft pick.

I'm confused. You say Moss & AA will start. Then you say Hank will start during the season & that either Gafney or Stallworth will start.

That makes more sense. I think Moss starts ahead of Gaffney. In 3 WR sets, Moss moves into the slot.

Too valuable as a returner to risk on a pass play, when we have others more adept. I expect that Moss, Armstrong and Gafney will "start". There won't be a set 2 WR's that are always there, but those 3 will always be in constant rotation in 2 WR sets.

Which leads me to believe that you'll see quite a few of these guys depending on the play and field position. But I guess that's dreadfully obvious....

Well, if I had to pick 2, I'd pick Armstrong and Gafney to start. Gafney stands out to me from camp reports and that's he's a possession guy. Armstrong stretches the field.

You make a good point about Banks, but I would think that you would have to keep 6, like Shanny did last year, if you keep Banks as a mainly a return specialist.

Don't forget that the NFL has changed the rules for kick-offs to abate the concussions players have been getting. Kickoffs will now take place on the 35 yard line instead of the 30. This will almost eliminate Bank's as a kick-off returner. He can still do punt returns, but his diminished role in kick-offs makes his chance of being on the team very small. I guess we'll see in the first pre-season game how much of a difference five yards makes on kick-offs.

Answer to you question is no. I definitely think that Niles Paul will make the team. He is a special teams stud as well as a good receiver. Check out my list on this thread.

My question was posed to CH1 who has already stated, earlier in this thread, that Paul is camp fodder, so I saw no point in asking him about Paul especially since he gave his reasons. Austin, on the other hand, was on the team, last year. That is hardly camp fodder in my book. He might not make it here, but he has a chance to get picked up by someone else.

Yes, we will see, but I think even if he does hace a good pre-season returning kicks, he will be shopped for a trade unless we keep 7 which is unlikely. I am not baseless on my opinion - when Shanny's no name backs got over 1,000 yards, it didn't stop him from trading them while they still had value.

Likewise, Brandon Banks came into camp ready to prove his rookie season was no fluke, his off the field issues were behind him, and he could contribute as a wide receiver. At the moment, both will be doing nothing at all as they are not practice this morning.

Yesterday, Malcolm Kelly suffered what appeared to be foot injury and was attended to by the staff on the field. Meanwhile, Brandon Banks has been on the sidelines not taking any work and not even having a helmet. This does not bode well for either player, who need to make their mark as the wide receiver position is primed and deep. For Kelly, the arrival of Jabar Gaffney and the drafting of Leonard Hankerson certainly impede on his chances of making the team solely because he is a big target. The fact that he also does not play special teams is another factor. In Bank’s case, he needs to show he can play offesne. Draftee Niles Paul can also return kicks and is seeing some reps at receiver. Also, not a good sign for him.

Look for these guys to move quickly or else, they will be moving to find new employment

I think that he can make the team. I don't have him in my six or seven because of numbers. - he's the odd guy out. I like the young guys - Paul and Robinson. I don't think that you are way out there to think that he will make it. He is still a good receiver.

Watch out for Aldrick Robinson

A few things about Robinson impressed this analyst, who studies a lot of college film. One was his hustle. We watched several plays that went away from Robinson and on each play he executed his assignment at full speed. Not every receiver does this consistently...

But what impressed the observer the most was Robinson’s ability to plant his foot, cut, and change direction. “That will get you separation at any level of football,” he said.

As we watched, many players, even some NFL veterans, were rounding off their routes. Robinson ran a simple square in and changed direction very suddenly. The ball did not come his way but he had achieved separation. Before practice wrapped up he executed a few more sharp cuts.

I will keep an eye on Robinson over the next few practices to see if he keeps is up. Most believe that Robinson will have a hard time making the 53-man roster and that a year on the practice squad is in the cards for him. But if he can display the skills that this analyst believes he has he just might force his way on to the roster.

This is why I belive Robinson will make the team. He comes from SMU where they have a track record of preparing their receivers for the NFL.

SEPARATION is the key word in this article.

I've been saying for awhile that Banks would be cut in order for Robinson to stay. The guy is just as fast as Banks, but can also play the WR position. Definitely don't see them keeping Banks who is one-dimensional over a player who can do two things.
