I realize FA is still going on but I am interested to hear after our moves so far what everyone thinks about how we will do this year.

No question, for me that we will be an improved team, but looking at the FA moves, it appears that Shanahan's priority is finding his guys to build for the future. He is willing to give up a couple of victories to see what he has rather than pursue the the sure thing. I know that I better elaborate on that one.

Example 1: Rumors were we were going after Harvey Dahl. We had the money to get him, but we get Chester. Clearly Dahl is better. Why Chester? We have many holes, Chester may find a home with his old coach and with ZBS, he might be a low cost piece that we need for the long hall, but then again, he might just turnout to be an average guard. Shanny has this season to find out. Shanny also feels confident about a lot of the young guys on the O line that he brough in.

Example 2. We all know about the QB situation. Sure, he can't get a veteran to come in a learn the O right away, but what is wrong with signing a Bulger in case, we find ourselves in the thick of a play-off race because of our defense and a lot of lucky bounces of the ball. Beck and/or Grossman prove to be the weak links and Bulger replaces them and puts us into the play-offs? OR Beck is playing well and gets hurt late in the season still within striking of a play-off berth. Enter Bulger and carries us into the play-offs. (For those who think we have no chance of a play-off berth, remember we weren't eliminated until the 13th game - Tampa Bay).
No, Shanny feels that Beck is his guy and he is going to take a season to find out.

Example 3. Defensive signing have been pretty good even without the splashes, but what if Rocky doesn't re-sign, Shanny appears ready to turn it over to Perry Riley. From how he talks about Riley, he feels that Riley is the real deal. He, so far, seems willing to find out this season rather than sign an experienced proven ILB.

I think most will agree that we would have won one or two more games last year if we stayed in the 4-3. Carter would have been effective. Less Haynesworth drama. Rocky comfortable etc. I would have felt better at 7-9 or 8-8, but to Shanny the goal is to build a foundation and he keeps saying 3-4 years.

With all that I am saying, my point is Shanny is willing to sacrifice a couple of wins to solve personnel questions he has. Big example was the "evaluation period" during the last three games. The record will not the mostimportant thing to look at in terms of improvement. The things I will look for this year are identity, consistency, better on the field coaching decisions, no Philly -like blow outs, much improved D ranking, improvem in offensive average points per game, a running game, a reliable FG kicker. A wild card play-off berth and Beck proving to be an NFL starter are desserts.

I do believe our QB play will pan out to keep us competitive for a play-off berth until the last last couple weeks of the season.

I hear what u r sayin but I still think that Lorenzo Alexander might have an upper hand at the ILB after playin OLB last year his footwork will be better and he's definitely got the size to shed those fat boys in the middle but it will be an interesting battle.

From my like of Zo, I would have to agree with you, but I think that Riley is Mike's guy. Everything he says about him is positive even when Riley screws up. It is like the guy can do know wrong even when he did two illegal blocks in the back. I said if Mike believes that much in the guy, he must be good, but then came the talk about Beck ...

I think Riley should be better than Zo in coverage. They may rotate.
