....some have speculated. JLC is at it again.... hahaha
In a recent report on NFL.com, former Redskins beat reporter Jason LaCanfora quoted a source as saying, “He is set on Beck. That’s his guy. He isn’t just saying it for the media or to blow smoke. He’s serious as hell about it.”
Before taking this statement as being the absolute truth, we should keep in mind that such leaks can be put out there to promote an agenda as much as impart the facts. However, there is another reason we should believe that Beck will be the guy under center on Sept. 11 when the New York Giants come to FedEx Field—the calendar.
It is July 14. The Redskins are planning to open their training camp two weeks from today. The NFL labor talks appear to be inching towards a finish sometime in the next week or so. At this point, no matter when they get a CBA signed, sealed, and delivered there will be no time for offseason preparations, nothing beyond maybe a few classroom sessions.
The situation will not just put a premium on experience on the offense; it will make it absolutely necessary. Although many have thought that Shanahan might go out and get a veteran free agent quarterback, that ship has sailed. It would be virtually impossible to bring in a quarterback like Vince Young or Marc Bulger now and have him sufficiently versed in the offense to start in about six weeks.
That article makes some good points. And it's also why I don't think our record is going to be that much better this year than it was last year, no matter what we do in free agency. You take a team that is still learning a new offense and defense, add in a new starting qb and possibly some other FAs and rookies into the starting rotation, without a full offseason to learn, and you likely aren't going to get results. The teams that are going to do well this year are going to be veteran teams that have been together for a while. Even talented, younger teams, like the Bucs, are going to struggle some in my opinion.
Knowing that Mike went against Kyle's wishes with McNabb. Knowing that Kyle preferred Grossman last year. With Mike coming out and saying Beck is the QB he likes. I would say that Kyle is in agreement with Mike, this time, on the QB.
When I look at Schaub play QB in the Houston offense, I notice that they move him around a lot in that pocket. Beck is supposed to be better at moving around in the pocket than Grossman. Now, that Beck has a year of this offense under his belt, I can see why Kyle may have pushed for Beck and this time, Mike is listening because he already liked Beck.
I believe that the Shanny's really are sold that Beck can get the job done this year. Does this mean that Beck is the QB for the future? I don't think that Shanny is saying or implying that.

Everybody has a short off season. Older players typically need more time to get in shape.

I think it's probably true. As I've always said I'm going to be in McNabb's camp as long as he's the best QB on our roster. However, it really does appear he won't be here long. There has been too much said and if he were even a consideration I think there would be more positive said about him from the organization. I still don't think it's impossible, but I see no signs his staying is going to happen.
So, if McNabb goes, I think Beck makes a lot more sense then Grossman. Grossman's had just too many chances to show he doesn't suck and hasn't done so. He also has no arm. He's a backup. I want to keep him for that reason. But start no way.
So, if Beck is decent in practice, it makes sense, start him this year. If he sucks go to Grossman this year. Either way look for a kid to groom. It makes sense. Grossman doesn't.

But teams that have been together for longer or that have been in the same system for more than a year have much less to learn and don't have to worry so much about gelling as an offense or defense.

I agree. I'm just saying that the short offseason will have multiple consequences. Teams that have an advantage in 1 area may well be disadvantaged in another.

the other thread was 12 pages - I guess we needed a new one
who cares?
no matter who is the QB, we're going to be better than 6 wins & most likely in the 8 to 9 win group this season
AND ... no matter who is the QB, we are NOT picking in the top 10
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Question.. as opposed to coaches yelling and screaming plays, you folks think it's better that the players are "coaching" these young guys?
I'm wondering because I think (and I honestly have no clue really) that players helping out players being on the same level may be pretty cool while learning. Who better to teach this system to Beck than Grossman who has been in it for so long? Fletch is obviously more than a great player he's shown to be a great leader and most likely a pretty good teacher too.
Well, anyways I was just wondering what you all thought about that. Perhaps we'll come out surprising plenty of people with improved play?

My opinion, LPJ, is that guys who want to soak up all they can about the NFL will take if from coaches and veteran players alike. The hardheads will be hardheads regardless of who's 'teaching' them. I think for us it will be good b/c it seems we have good character guys who are more likely to soak it all up.
...any given Sunday....
RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

The National Anthem sucks.
What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.

Grossman has only been in the system 2 trs to Back's 1.

I'm sure we'll continue to see improvement from both the players and coaches this season like we did see at the end of last season
I am not as concerned about Beck as QB - we are still putting together an offensive line (and defensive line) - it's not going to be a big deal who is the QB - that becomes a little more important when we bring in the next guy
we are seeing the results of a franchise being managed by NFL people and rebuilding
I think we'll see better play but I think we'll really be a lot better off next season
I don't expect a lot but I'm fairly sure we're not picking in the top 10 next draft
There's a lot to look forward to here

Agreed. So, I'm pretty sure I won't have to suffer taking sh$t from my eagles' fan friends as a result of my team getting bent over anymore (I went to school in Philly; yes they're good people, I swear). I just want a team I can be proud of legitimately. Tired of having to be creative to defend them.

Starting to make sense....
As crazy as it sounds, Mike Shanahan may have guaranteed himself an extra season or two as the Washington Redskins' head coach by throwing his support behind quarterback John Beck.
Shanahan is scaring members of the Redskins organization with his "unwavering" backing of Beck, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora. La Canfora quoted a Redskins source who insisted Shanahan is "serious as hell" about going with Beck as the Redskins' quarterback.
At first glance, the decision to start Beck is a head-scratcher because the 29-year-old has only played in five NFL games and thrown just one touchdown in his career. However, film study of Beck's scarce NFL experience shows the idea may not be as crazy as it sounds.
In Beck, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan undoubtedly sees a resemblance to Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who the younger Shanahan developed into a top-ten quarterback in Houston. Beck and Schaub have similar throwing motions, and both have the same ability to keep their feet underneath them when throwing on the run.
We knew NFL players were eager to get back to work, but John Beck, the Redskins' presumptive starting quarterback, might have taken it to the highest level. According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, Beck headed over to Redskins Park a few minutes after Roger Goodell announced that the lockout was over. A security guard (who didn't recognize him, Jones writes) turned him away, telling him players weren't allowed to report until Tuesday morning. “I’m OK with that,” Beck said of not being recognized when reached this afternoon. “I haven’t done anything yet.”
Beck hadn’t received official word on the start of training camp, but some teammates had told him that they are scheduled to check in on Wednesday, and then the first practice will take place Thursday.
I don't have official word from the Redskins yet. I have received releases from the Eagles and Cowboys saying they'll open camp Wednesday, and according to the official calendar the league released, the Giants' camp is scheduled to open Friday and the Redskins' camp Thursday. I presume that Beck will be there, in full uniform, ready to greet his teammates as they arrive.
Got to give the guy points for enthusiasm. I assume that most of us, if we were told we had a real chance to be a starting quarterback for an NFL team, would be just as fired up as Beck is. We'll see what happens in camp between him and Rex Grossman, and whether the Redskins bring in anyone else for the competition. But if you can get bonus points for being rarin' to go, Beck is squarely in the lead.
I am starting to convince myself that Beck will succed just like I convinced myself Zorn was going to be a diamond in the rough. I wish I would not do this to myself.

Whadda ya mean? Even the most casual NFL fan can see that Beck is ready to have a 10 year, repeat Pro Bowl, mulitple Super Bowl MVP winning, Hall of Fame career as quarterback for the Washington Redskins, he's had 4 years to master the nuances of the NFL on his keister being misevaluated by the brain dead heads of football operation in Miami (Parcells) and Baltimore (Newsome) and now he is ready to take this league by storm! Who needs game experience? Hell, I'm surprised such a genius as Shannahan didn't see it last year, too busy looking at that McNabb guy, I guess.
In Beck we Trust!!
