ESPN’s John Clayton on free agent Braylon Edwards: “Watch for Washington to make a big bid.”

DCPSR

Edwards has the size [6'3" and 218 lbs] the Redskins want and need and at 28 years old he should still have a few good years left in him. The problem is that Edwards has only had one really good season and that was back in 2007. He played pretty well last year, averaging 17.1 yards on 53 catches [904 yards] for a run-oriented New York Jets offense. On the other hand, those are hardly great numbers and they came in a contract season — when Edwards was likely to put forth his best effort. It would surprise exactly no one if Edwards never plays that had or well again once he’s got a new signing bonus making his wallet fatter than ever before. Dan Snyder is usually the sucker on the receiving end of that punch.
If the Redskins are going to dip into the free agent pool at t his position, I think they would do better to pursue a free agent wide receiver like Sidney Rice. Sure, Rice was hurt last season and played in only six games, catching 17 passes for 280 yards [16.5] and two TD. Rice was a superstar in 2009 when he caught 83 passes for 1312 yards [15.8] and 8 TD, but that’s been his only good year. On the other hand, Rice is four years younger than Edwards and an inch taller. Because he’s coming off an injury-plagued season Rice is likely to be cheaper than Edwards, but will probably be a lot more productive over the next five years.

I'd take Rice over Edwards at the same price, if Rice is cheaper they have to get him

I much rather have Rice. Braylon seems to have an attitude for a guy who has underachieved. Braylon has all the talent in the world just hasn't lived up to his full potential.

+1 Rice

Both of them have potential and would be a major upgrade for us. I just see more potential in Rice.

Sidney Rice please. Just bring him back slowly and atleast for the first season put him in street clothes every time he is hurting. He could be big for us going forward.

Then again, Braylon Edwards is lower risk.

Or we could pull a Redskins and sign both.

It would only be pulling a Redskins if we signed both for more than market value, Rice continued to have injury problems and Edwards panned out like a Brandon Lloyd... all the talent in the world but never motivated as a skin, released and successful elsewhere. Wait, that's a pulling Vinnie, hopefully not pulling a Redskin anymore.

Rice. However, I want money spent on the OL instead. AA is better than given credit for here. He'll have a fine year.

Rice, though I have a feeling that we'll get burned by either one of these guys.

IMO, Tana wouldn't be back if we signed Edwards and Rice and that is a shame because he has been more productive over the last few years than the other two. The only down fall Tana has is age.

If Skins fan's think Moss drops a lot of balls they should watch BE! The guy is always at the top of the league in dropped passes. The guy dropped more passes in one season than Rod Gardner did his whole time with the Skins.

How about we not sign any FA Wr's and wait until next year when Larry Fitzgerald is a FA! I am all for tanking for the year to land Andrew Luck at the #1 pick. We should focus on signing O-lineman that can protect Andrew Luck in 2012.

F signing Braylon Edwards that would be the biggest mistake. We would be welcoming into town the New "50 50" replacing Rod Gardner. F That. We will all know if we sign Braylon Edwards to a monster deal that Snyder made the move.

we are going to have to spend $40 million. We need to drop McNabb and Haynesworth however we have to (hopefully via trade)and sign DeAngelo Williams, David Akers, Nnamdi Asomugha, Aubrayo Franklin, Sidney Rice AND bring back Moss.

Keep Moss and neither. If I had to pick 1, I don't know which 1 I would pick. I like Edward's big play balls out potential, but Rice has big play ability, too. Honestly, neither give me a warm and fuzzy.

As I said earlier, if I had to pick one, I would pick Rice, but I agree with Vet. Moss and neither one of them. Edwards drops too many balls and has character issues. We need to stay with veterans who are team first.
Rice would fit the team first. I think that he showed that he is recovered from the injury in his brief appearance last year. I would love to have him, but Rice will not come cheap - I think that our prioritites should be elsewhere. Defense and run game (O line - re-sign Brown and sign a guard) should be the priority here.

I like the reports thad they are interested in Santonio Holmesan and bringing Moss back, but they really don't have any interest in Edwards.
