Mike Shanahan: Running Backs Build His Teams

This is a pretty popular article and a pretty popular theory these days...

Good article. The key to all of this is still the offensive line. Right now, it is among the worst in the NFL. I agree with the thought in the article that Shanahan will get it fixed.

I like this quote from PeterCO42's link

Hang in there Redskins fans because if you watch the original movie, you’ll know that he’s capable of turning your team into consistent winners. With the acquisitions of these running backs, the improving offensive line, and the rookie receivers, Aldrick Robinson, Niles Paul, and in my estimation, the steal of the draft, Leonard Hankerson, this team will be contending sooner, rather than later. The defense will see the most improvement when these running backs start getting traded, because that’s how his system works.

I agree on all counts with this article. Im not trying to be a SHanny homer at all, but look at the facts.

1. He has brought a sense of discipline to a team that was listening to music during practices and skipping meeting the yr before.

2. He admits his mistakes (benching McNabb who got OUTPLAYED by Rex)

3. He has kept Danny in the owners box, and out of FO decsions

4. He has transformed the FO into a solid group

5. Has actually undergone a rebuilding process, something this team/fan base knows absolutely NOTHING about.

6. Face it, he knows O Line and RB. He is being patient with alot of guys who drive us crazy (Lichensteiger, Rabach) because we are rebuilding. Im really expecting to be a solid team in 2-3 years, until then hold on because we it will be a bumpy ride until some of these guys develop
Mike/Bruce - If your going to spring big this year in Free Agency, please spring big on offensive lineman! I cant watch Rabach anymore!

I stopped reading after I saw that Mike might want to try Vince Young here - I highly doubt that
Mike made a mistake with McNabb and I don't think he will take on a QB like Young

Mike is NOT patient and he will twist anything & everything he can that might be seen or perceived as a mistake or a flaw

We needed someone to come in here and change just about EVERYTHING we had done over the past 10+ years

Mike has begun the work here but just like the NFL draft, nothing will be really known for a few years and we look at the results

there have been mistakes = bad .... there has been progress = good
the jury is still out as to whether the good will outweigh the bad
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I have no doubt that Mike & Bruce will bring in the players needed and I'm sure we are going to see players traded as we continue the rebuild process and also because there are so many positions that need help

I think that towards the end of last season despite all the issues we saw glimpses of some good things and I think that will continue

One of the reasons I'm glad we have Mike instead of some of the other guys that were being considered is because I think he's intense to a fault and driven to succeed more than most - he will instill that same desire in his players and we have already seen evidence of it

We are going to need to continue to get a lot of players in here but I believe these guys can get it done because Mike will not accept anything less than consistently good performances from both his players and coaches

Good article - thanks for posting. So nice to see something positive/optimistic.

You know after the two SBs, Shanahan still had 7 winning seasons out of 11 with the Broncos. I think most Redskins fans would be pretty happy if he can achieve anything close to that here.

Yeah. Ask Elway if that's true.

This is the guy who flagged Clinton Portis as a "system back".
As if the Backs don't really matter.

The truth is the truth.
Mike Shanahan is nothing without a King Cobra Quarterback to make his offense go.

No Elway, No Shanahan.
That's the truth.

Get a QB

No Peyton - No Dungy Super Bowl; No Brady - No Belicheck Super Bowls; No Roethlisberger - No Cowher and No Tomlin Super Bowls.

How many Super Bowls has Dungy won without Peyton? How Many Super Bowls has Belichick won without Tom. How many Super Bowls has Cowher won without Ben? Noll without Bradshaw? Johnson without Aikman (Johnson even had Marino and did not win one with him)? Lombardi without Starr?

BTW - How many Super Bowls has Elway won without Shanahan?

By my calculations all of that adds up to ZERO.

Your analogy does not fly. Seven out of eleven winning seasons without Elway is a winning coach and that is something.

Truth is there is only one Joe Gibbs!. Three Super Bowls with three different QB's. Joe Gibbs #1 would have won a Super Bowl with Campbell as a his QB.

NO! That is VERY misguided

Having a good QB is VERY important to ANY franchise and certainly having a great QB helps make a HC look a lot better but to think that a HC is ONLY going to be able to build a consistently competitive product with a great QB is just not 'true'

This franchise was in terrible shape because of Snyder and Cerrato's management AND their undermining the coaches by not allowing them to do their jobs

Shanahan is a part of an FO that seems to be helping fix the mistakes of dumb and dumber and is working on finding the pieces that are needed to ensure success

A good QB will help but given time Shanahan will show that he's a great HC and we already know that he's a huge upgrade over who we had managing this franchise

IMO Shanahan is possibly the ONLY HC that could turn this mess around - a lot of other HCs would have tried to work with Snyder and Shanahan knew that would not work PLUS he will not put up with any player thinking he's bigger than the player's around him

There are not many coaches as suitable for what this franchise needed AND there were NONE available at the time :D

THAT's the truth

Watch the NFL special when TD was there in Denver (I don't know if it was SB 32 or 33). TD had a migraine so bad he couldn't even see straight. They said, "Just go in there, you don't have to do anything."
...any given Sunday....

RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

GSPODS:
The National Anthem sucks.
What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.

no dilfer no raven sb.....haha billick- i would love to dilfer ourselves another Super Bowl. maybe Beck it for #4?

seriously though. if the guy shanny wanted wasnt there this year you cant blame the guy for not wasting a pick on someone that he doesnt like. i think there were a couple teams that pushed it drafting qb's 1. too early and 2. who couldnt play.
I know this guy named Jimmy, he has a pet....POSTERNUTBAG! Thats his cats name, POSTERNUTBAG!!!
