Helu has enough size and speed to serve as a backup but probably won't be a full-time load back in the NFL. Isn't your prototypical inbetween-the-tackles or game-breaking back. Runs hard but doesn't pick up as many yards after contact as you'd like to see. Can get to the perimeter and get headed vertically but doesn't have home-run speed or great elusiveness. Somewhat of a liability in passing situations. Not a polished route-runner, hands are only average, and doesn't protect the passer with much technique or passion. Helu's still a big back who can run and should be selected on Day 3.

Anyone know who Roy Helu is or what we gave up to get the pick?

Seems like a lot to give up for this guy based on his evaluation but he did average 7 yds per carry and Mike is a hell of a RB evaluator - which I'm not.

Clearly, Shanahan sees something that others haven't... Shanahan knows running backs...

Like they said on NFL Network - he averaged 7 yds per carry. That's pretty damn good IMO considering we averaged about 3.5 yds which was one of the worst in the NFL.

I think he might have been there for our 30th pick in the 4th round. There were 6-7 RBs ahead of him on most "experts" board.

Yeah but the expert boards have been WAAAYYYY Off this year but I know most of them said it was going to be like that this year based on the fact that there is a lot of talent but most of the talent is VERY different.

#Redskins traded their 4th rounder (127) and two 5th rounders (144 and 152). For the pick they just made and a 6th rounder (178). #Redskins

Hmmmmm...don't know why they felt the need to trade up for this guy. All three picks on the first two days made a lot of sense to me, but this one has me puzzled. For now, I'll accept the "Shanahan knows running backs" angle on it....

A lil info on Helu:

Does a nice job of getting quickly to check downs. However, doesn't have a lot of suddenness with routes to consistently create adequate separation. Hands are a bit inconsistent. Shows excellent awareness in pass pro. However lacks aggression at times and technique needs development.

I like the pass blocking awareness.

If Stanzi is there, he might be our guy.

Well, I got the RB right. Now we need to get Stanzi or a lot of OL help.

Although a little reading up about the guy suggests that, just because I'd never heard of him before today, that might be down to my ignorance - his performances at the combine were excellent, and he has a track record of productivity in college.

From the bleacher report after the combine. They highlighted 11 players, and two the Skins have drafted: First the U of Miami WR and now Roy Helu:

Roy Helu Jr. was considered a solid but not explosive back. He may have just changed that perception.

Helu is well built at 5'11" and 219 pounds, and he can move that compact body. He posted a 4.42 in the 40. He then posted the second best (among RBs) 3-cone drill time at 6.67.

Not content with that, Helu posted the best RB times in the 20- and 60-yard shuttles.

He then went for the eighth-highest vertical leap among RBs with 36.5" and a 10th-best broad jump at 9'11".

Helu's explosiveness likely just propelled him from the fifth round to the third.

We picked him up in the 4th - sounds about right. But I am not sure I like what we gave up for him. All depends on how he pans out, but he seems to have the "tangibles" that some (Ahem, Redskins_Fanatic) have said we ignored this year.

An intriguing pick for sure. Not sure what I feel about it yet, but if he has strength, I like him for the NFC East. I think I saw somewhere that Dallas was eying him to replace Marion Barber, or at least back him up.

Pick doesn't make sense b/c they have Amendola. That kid is a 3rd down nightmare for defenses.

Helu Jr is pretty good. I mean he rushed for over 300 yards against a top ten NCAA team. He should be good in Shanny's system. He is a very good one cut and go guy. Watch some videos of him gash Mizzo

he seems like a stephen davis type of guy. which is good if he can be taught to run a little lower like stephen was towards the middle of his career...
