I did not write this. You quoted the wrong poster. I quoted someone else and said I thought there were 3 QBs rated ahead of Mallet.

Redskins_Fanatic wrote:Nope. There is probably not going to be any QB I would want available at the #10 spot, and we have both too many needs and not enough picks to even consider moving up at all.

Sorry about that. I think there are at least three rated ahead of Mallet and I don't want Mallet, regardless of whether he's there at #10 or not. Luck and Newton are the only two I would even consider, and they'll both be long gone by #10.

Agreed. I'm thinking WAY down, probably to somewhere in the #25-28 range, hopefully in multiple steps so we can get some more picks to use on linemen, linebackers, and maybe a FS or CB.

No hard feelings. Actually glad you're not "done" though it's been fun teasing you.

Trading down in multiple steps would be ideal if we could do it and then pick wisely.

I'm at a point now, with the removal of Luck from the equation where I want out of the #10 pick simply because I don't think there will be anyone there that I want. I definitely don't want to go the BPA route at #10, and I do not believe there will be anyone who I believe is worth the pick available at a POSITION OF NEED for us.

Right now I'd probably consider taking $0.75 on the $1.00 to get out of that pick, unless something changes dramatically with the Combine or in Free Agency prior to the draft.

I have from a usually reliable source to keep an eye on Colin Kapernick as a possible late-round pick. I know little about him but fortunately he plays tonight so I'll get a chance to "evaluate" him.

This the QB from Nevada that brought them back from a 24-3 deficit to Boise St. to win in overtime. The guy can run and throw.

More not so good news about Mallett.

Some have compared Mallett to Ryan Leaf, a similar big, strong-armed pocket quarterback with off-the-field concerns, who was the second pick of the 1998 NFL draft before flaming out as perhaps the biggest bust in league history.

“He’s one of those guys you’re going to have to check out pretty carefully,” Brandt says of Mallett.

What off-field concerns does Mallett have other than a misdemeanor? We did sign Larry Johnson...

Couldn't find any specifics, so that should mean that there is nothing serious out there that is yet to be uncovered; however, with this quote from the article I posted:

“I’m not like I used to be,” he said with a sheepish grin. “I grew up a lot since my younger days.”

there is an implication that there is something out there. What do the articles I posted amount to? Probably nothing more than reporters setting themselves up to say, "I told you so," if Mallet flops because of attitude; however, buyer do beware.

Are you comparing the risk of signing Larry Johnson with a vet minimum contract to the risks of drafting and signing a #10 pick?

As far as bringing in players with off-the-field issues, yes. Bring in LJ with major issues and little upside, then scoff at a potential franchise QB because of a misdemeanor charge?

One thing your comparison does show is, if Shanahan thinks that Mallett is HIS QB, then the media reports with no serious incidents reported, will not scare Shanahan away.

Citing a source “extremely close to the Washington Redskins,” NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported on Path to the Draft Monday evening that Mike Shanahan’s club has legitimate first-round interest in Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett.

I wonder if ChiefHog was that source. He knew this way back in January. :)

Evan Silva from PFT says:
but in our opinion, he’s not going to be a Redskin. Shanahan might be intrigued by Mallett’s big arm, but he wouldn’t fit the head coach’s decades-long track record with athletic passers

I would not be bothered in the least by having Mallett on the roster.

Bonehead move

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett did not show up for a meeting with the Carolina Panthers earlier this month during an official pre-draft visit to Charlotte, N.C.

Mallett met team officials for dinner April 8, the day he arrived in town, but meetings the next day at Bank of America Stadium were cancelled after Mallett called and said he was sick, multiple sources told the National Football Post.

Complicating the matter is the fact sources said Mallett was seen out on the town late following the dinner. Off-field questions have followed Mallett every step of the process since he announced he was leaving school in January with eligibility remaining.

Two sides to every story...

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett did not keep his appointment for a meeting with the Carolina Panthers earlier this month during an official pre-draft visit in Charlotte, according to NationalFootballPost.com, which cited unnamed sources.

Mallett and Panthers officials met for dinner on April 8. Mallet was supposed to meet with the team the following day, but reportedly called and said he was sick. What makes the matter murky is that sources said Mallett was seen out on the town after having dinner with the team

A source with the Panthers would not confirm or deny the story to the Sporting News.

J.R. Carroll, an agent representing Mallett, told ESPN that "Ryan was in his hotel room by about 10 o'clock.”

Mallett did meet with Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski the next morning, Carroll told ESPN, but that his client was genuinely ill and missed a meeting planned for later in the day.

“I'm pretty sure Ryan was really, really sick,” Carroll was quoted as saying. “He told me he was sick the night before. And I know Ryan wasn't out late night. I know that for sure. He's not an idiot."
