Orioles Triumph After 16 Innings
Tejada Is Clutch In Franchise's Longest Game: Orioles 7, Phillies 6
By Dave Sheinin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, July 3, 2004; Page D01

PHILADELPHIA, July 2 -- The toll for the Baltimore Orioles for their win Friday night was nine pitchers used, two members of the starting lineup injured, one starting pitcher alienated by a perceived quick hook, one all-star catcher beaned in the helmet, one bullpen fried to an absolute crisp. The staggering effort for the Orioles included 13 straight scoreless innings by the bullpen and seven straight hitless innings.

ImageBaltimore's Rafael Palmeiro singles in David Newhan and Melvin Mora with a hit in the first inning. (George Widman - AP)

The time of game was 6 hours 15 minutes, the longest game in franchise history. The ending came at 1:23 a.m. Saturday, or about 22 hours after the Orioles' flight from Kansas City, Mo., landed here. The final score was 7-6 in 16 innings, Orioles. It was witnessed by 44,390 fans at Citizens Bank Park, a gleaming new stadium that had never hosted anything like this, and probably will not again for some time.

It was followed by fireworks.

The Orioles won it in the top of the 16th on Miguel Tejada's RBI single to center field with one out off Brian Powell. It scored David Newhan, who had led off the inning with a single.

Tejada was the hero of the game. Back in the seventh inning -- which is to say, eons ago -- Tejada had tied it with a solo homer off Phillies right-hander Tim Worrell. Hours later, in the bottom of the 14th, he made a spectacular play in the hole at short, with the bases loaded and two out, and threw out Placido Polanco by a half-step to keep the game going.

The linescore brought milestones: Eddy Rodriguez, the Orioles' eighth pitcher, earned his first big-league win, and Daniel Cabrera, a starter pressed into 16th-inning duty, earned his first big-league save.

The Orioles would celebrate this extraordinarily hard-fought and hard-earned win, but they are too exhausted and beaten-up, and perhaps a small part of their collective psyche is wondering whether one win in a 162-game season is worth the destruction it toll it took on them.

And the Orioles may be scared of what the next day will bring, with a bullpen full of shattered arms, and a lineup full of bodies that are fully spent at best, broken-down at worst.

The bullpen's effort was simply astounding. From the third inning, when John Parrish allowed an unearned run, to the last out of the 16th, eight Orioles pitchers combined to hold the Phillies scoreless. The no-hit string lasted from the sixth inning to the 14th, when it was broken up by Phillies pitcher Brian Powell -- who was batting only because the Phillies had no more position players.

It was the Orioles' first game in gleaming new Citizens Bank Park, and it felt like three games.

Phillies slugger Jim Thome struck out five times in eight trips to the plate. The ninth spot in the Orioles' order -- manned by pitchers and reserve outfielder Chad Mottola amassed six strikeouts. Orioles pitchers issued 17 walks, four of them intentional.

The win was the Orioles' third in a row, but it exacted a high price. The Orioles emerged with their bullpen in total shambles, a frightening proposition with four more games coming up over the next three days.

In addition, the ranks of the discontented, the disaffected and the bruised of ego and body grew exponentially during the course of the Orioles' endless evening.

The Orioles saw lefty starter Matt Riley blow a five-run first-inning lead and fail to make it out of the second inning, then go into a mini-rage -- shooting a venomous look and an expletive toward the mound from the top step of the dugout -- upon his quick departure. Riley's ERA is 8.39, and there is no guarantee he will get another start.

They saw third baseman Melvin Mora (strained hamstring) and left fielder Larry Bigbie (sprained ankle) leave the game with injuries, and Mora's appears to be a disabled-list situation. They saw catcher Javy Lopez hit in the head by a Geoff Geary fastball but remain in the game.

Man, this was a good game! It was 6 hours and 15 minutes long and ended at 1:20 in the morning. I am so tired from watching it. I'm glad we won and both Boston and New York lost. I think the O's aren't in last place anymore.

Great Game.... but to start off 5-0 in the top of the 1st and still be play 6 hours later that had to be rough on the fans and the O's
But a win is a win

I watched that game here in the Philadelphia area, and I tell you what... that really was a heck of a performance by the Orioles bullpen. Even the Philadelphia announcers named the O's bullpen as the collective player(s) of the game. One run in twelve innings? Very well done.

My girlfriend and I are having our third anniversary on Sunday, and we got tickets to the Orioles-Phillies game for that afternoon. I can only hope that the game on Sunday is as good as the one last night.

As a side note, let's hope that, if the Expos move to DC, their new stadium is as nice as Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. It really is a magnificent stadium. We went to the very first game there, an exhibition game against the Indians. We were in section 114, I believe, and you wouldn't believe how nice that place is, especially when you're that close to the action.

Anybody who's in the general vicinity of Philadelphia should make it a point to head up there and check that ballpark out if you haven't already. It's quite a sight to see.

I'm a die-hard Braves fan. I'm glad Baltimore pulled that one out. It helped the Braves gain ground. I hope Baltimore wins again. Hopefully the Braves will beat the Redsox again tonight.
Let us all gather around and drink the Cooley-Aid of the Redskins.

I must say I enjoyed watching the Red Sox kick the crap out of the braves tonight. They gave up a grand slam to Mirabelli among all people. How do you give up a grand slam to him????

Maybe tomorrow....tomorrow can always bring a brighter day. :D

I hope your proud of yourself, JH. The Phillies pounded a 600 pounder with no pitching skill whatsoever. Ponson sucks horribly. $22 mil down the drain right there.

Just remember... Game of the Year nominee. Remember who won, buddy. Also keep in mind the O's had just arrived at their team hotel at 4:30 in the morning and still managed to play 6 1/4 hours to beat the Phillies. Thome 0-8, Thome 0-8, Thome 0-8. 5 strikeouts. It just keeps ringin through your precious pug ears, doesn't it?

I love ribbin ya JH.

I'm going to the O's game tommorow. My boy Daniel Cabrera is starting but it's against the D-Rays pitcher who almost had a no hitter just a few days ago. I thought we would lose but now that I know Daniel is pitching, I think we're going to win! It's sad when I worry about losing to the D-Rays. :?

Listen...I've never been to the new ballpark at Philly. I'm goin' to my first game on July 22nd. I'm looking forward to it because I hated the Vet. In my opinion, there is no way it can top Baltimore's park. I luv that place!

The game on Sunday was terrific. I was wearing my Phillies hat, as not to attract attention to myself, but I was surrounded by Orioles fans. I bet you can guess who I was cheering for. Hint hint, it wasn't the Phillies. I don't have anything against the Phillies or anything, but I do prefer the Orioles.

It was a pretty good game, in my opinion. Go Cabrera, too! He's very quickly becoming the ace of the staff, which is kind of sad in a way.

Growing up, it seems a lot of people around where I lived were Phillies fans....and a lot were Orioles fans. I chose the Phillies because I cannot stand the designated hitter rule. I love the strategy of the game when a pitcher has to hit. I think this is why I stuck with the Phillies. Besides, how can you NOT like John Kruk (back in the day).

I hated having to go to the VET all of these years....and I absolutely drooled when I first saw Camden Yards. However, I don't like the parking situation in Baltimore at all. It also takes me about 40-45 minutes to get to Philly versus 60-75 minutes to get to Baltimore.

I am looking forward to seeing my first game in Philly's new ballpark later this month.

Hope you enjoy the game, JH.

I've been to Camden Yards at least 6 times. I like the ballpark but I've never really found anything special to it. I guess since I'm so used to seeing it on tv that it seems old to me. I know it's only been around for 12 years, though. I think Philly's new park is pretty cool but then again, I think all new ballparks are cool.

Well, the game was pretty fun on baseball terms. As I predicted... we won. There was a fan that intefered with Tim Raines, Jr. trying to catch a foul ball and the whole area booed him like crazy, including myself. The guy had to be escorted out and everyone cheered. It was hilarious. Then Tino Martinez hit a 2 run homer to tie the game. The fans yelled "Throw it back! Throw it back!" Then the ball flew over the scoreboard and onto the field. The crowd cheered.

On Comcast Sports Net at 6:30 they're going to show highlights from the game. You should see Tim Raines, Jr. in a few of them. He was the MVP of the game. He was just awesome today.

He needs to throw like that against the Yankees. I got sick and tired of seeing every pitcher on the Orioles all of a sudden get hit like a pin ball machine when the Yankees came to town.
