33rd out of 32 teams? He really must have been sucking wind.
So he's worse then every team's punter including a punter who got cut and his replacement. It was always silly that some assumed he was cut for that play, I thought it was pretty clear all along it wasn't. If anyone was going to be cut for that game alone it was Gano
...Just checked NFL.com stats, his net avg is ranked 33rd, his yard avg is ranked 31st, but it also seems like he shanked a punt everytime we needed a good one this season.
I still don't think he should have been the scapegoat this week, but its obvious he didn't get cut just for that botched PAT.
Who scapegoated him?
I think he took the blame himself, but he could have been Danny Smith or Shanahans scapegoat...not really sure which, but IMO that loss was more on Gano than anyone. I think they cut the wrong person at this point, even though all 3 (Gano, Sundberg, Smith) deserve to be cut after this season.
I'm confused. You argued he's 33rd in a league with 32 teams so it doesn't seem like we were blaming him for one game, now you're arguing we cut him for one game. I think you were right the first time...

I know the sentiment on the board here is to continually cut kickers if they have a rough couple games. I, for one (and I may be the only one), would like to see them stick with Gano and give him a couple years. He's a youngster, he's got a fairly strong leg, decent kickoffs, and decent accuracy... I know all that stuff needs to improve some, but I think all that will improve as he matures and gets more comfortable/confident. I'm tired of the revolving door of kickers, punters and QBs...

I agree that Gano blew opportunities... but, the loss sits squarely on the shoulders of Mike and Kyle. That game should have been won by Gano... but the reasons it was on him was because our coaching staff did a horrible job of play calling and clock management last Sunday... Period.
The troika of Gano, Sundburg, and Smith blew multiple scoring opportunities, but intelligent coaching would not have put the game into their hands.
Muddy field, rain, wind... why would you abandon a down hill running game that was clicking on all cylinders?????????? That's just a start.
Blame the troika, yes... but as an afterthought. Primary responsibility for that loss was bad coaching.

I generally agree with your sentiment, but what concerned me was that after missing the first kick he missed the second and almost missed everything else. Kicker is like CB, you have to have no memory. That he mentally collapsed like that concerns me more then a bad game

Let me clarify...I think they should have cut him, it was a good decision based on his play so far this season. However, I do not think they should have cut him just because of that game. They picked a bad time to do it, because it makes it seem like they are blaming him for this past weeks loss, and I don't agree he should be cut solely because of that one mishandled snap.

I hear what you're saying about memory, but watching his interview after the game I didn't get the impression the second kick was a collapse. It didn't sound like he miss-hit it and was trying to compensate for anything he did on the first one. On the contrary, he said the ball actually felt good when it came off his foot.
Don't get me wrong, I know numbers don't lie, and if he's gone after this year, no one will blame the 'Skins, but i get the feeling he may have an upside if someone sticks with him...
of course I thought the same thing about Durant Brooks though and he's sitting at home...

I think it's very clear he wasn't let go for that game but for the season, based on what you pointed out. His season stats are horrible. I don't really get why it would "appear" to be any differently. He's 33rd in a race with 32 places. He's one of the worst punters through 13 games in the league: "AHA, it was that one game wasn't it!!!"
I still don't really get it, but we can let it go

Yeah, but then he almost missed another chip field goal, almost missed his extra point. And those "almosts" were seriously "almosts." He barely made them. It was by a whisker. Four kicks in one game that NFL kickers rarely miss is hard to believe it was coming off his foot fine and just bad luck.
