Phillip Daniels calls out Haynesworth

Post by spudstr04 »

ASHBURN, Va. -- Phillip Daniels has some stern words for Albert Haynesworth.

The veteran defensive lineman choked up Monday morning when talking about the latest Haynesworth distraction in the Washington Redskins' disappointing season.

Haynesworth was inactive for Sunday's loss to the New York Giants after an illness limited him at practice Friday.

Daniels says he hasn't missed a practice all year at age 37, even though he's been sick lately. He says Haynesworth hasn't fully grasped the concept of team, and that Haynesworth could be the NFL player of the year if fully committed to football.

Daniels says he has been through 15 seasons and hasn't won anything, so "if I can come out here and do this, don't tell me that you can't do it."

It's a darn shame that this man (Daniels) had to put up with this immature crap, and may have to end his career on a down note.

Should he have voiced his opinion like this in public about Haynesworth? Perhaps not, but, man was this LONG overdue.
Back and better than ever!

I think that is exactly what he should've done. They've managed to keep a good portion of this locked away and sometimes, you just get fed up. I feel for Phil and wish him nothing but success but he knows that he doesn't have much left and right now, the state of the team needs to win out. And that is going to be very tough given the games we have left. If every guy can give 100% for the rest of the season, who knows. But if they don't give 100%, then we know what the result will be and that's what we've seen for 10+ years.

His comments are pointless. This is nothing new and it contributes nothing to the team. The problems on this team go way beyond Haynesworth.

Apparently, Daniels got choked up.

Yea, he probably just finished watching tape of the Giants game.

I disagree. These are GREAT news. Fat Boy will not be with us anymore. If the ONLY thing that comes out of this multi-million dollar fiasco is that NOBODY is ahead of the team not only due to the coach but the players themselves, it is a good thing.

Yes, this is very true. But there is no denying that lack of DISCIPLINE and selfish attitudes are important parts of the problem.

What a boring and ridiculous soap opera have become the Redskins under Daniel Snyder.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

I actually disagree. Sure there is some of this, but the main problem is a lack of talent. Year in and year out fans vastly overestimate the talent level of the Skins. Our roster stinks and it's been that way for the last ten years.

Question: does this count as the team getting behind Shanahan's mindset of discipline, integrity, and accountability? I think it does. My 2 cents

No. Phillip Daniels had accountability and discipline way before Shanahan showed up. I had the good fortune of eating dinner last year with Phillip Daniels at a Redskins corporate event with he and his wife. The guy was pure class, unlike some of the other schmoes in attendance.

Did we forget London Fletcher calling out Haynesworth before the season? Did he learn accountability because of Shanahan? No. Fletcher and Daniels get it. They understand the concept of TEAM....as Daniels so aptly put, this is something Haynesworth has never understood. They didn't need Shanahan to tell them that.

I believe the reports that the Redskins will not release Haynesworth and I believe that whether or not Haynesworth plays again in a Redskins uniform is in Haynesworth's hands. If he practices, he will play. If he doesn't, he will not. That has been made clear to him and to the whole team since the beginning of training camp. There is no vendetta against him. If he plays good technique at DE, then he starts if not he is only going to play in packages. Would I start him at DE over Golston whether he plays good technique or not? Yes, but I am a short sighted fan who is not thinking about building a foundation for winning teams to come. I'll let Shanahan do the coaching.

Soooo... that means that Haynesworth should get a pass??? Whatever. Phil Daniels may not be the first team keystone he once was, but he is the picture of self discipline and team first attitude.

He gets his say.

Hate it, Bru, but gotta agree with Wahoo on this. If this were Hall or Portis, it'd definitely mean you were right... I just don't see it yet.

I'm not saying that the players are learning or acquiring accountability, discipline, etc. because of Shanahan. If they didn't already have it before he got here, then there'd be no hope of them ever learning it anyway.

I was referring to a recent discussion about Shanahan and the attitude he's trying to bring to this franchise. One THN member thinks Shanahan "doesn't give a RIP about" the team because he benched Haynesworth. Another says that he doesn't see the team "falling in line" with Shanahan's approach.

I think this news story is another piece of evidence that these claims aren't true. Team leaders are speaking up and there is no visible chaos in the locker room because of Haynesworth. Some players get it—and, yes, as you point out, they have gotten it since before Shanahan got here. The ones who don't get it are either being disciplined (Haynesworth) or have been let go. There will be more fat-trimming this offseason.

I just don't think that if Zorn or Spurrier was head coach that this is how the problem would be handled. (Remember only a couple of seasons ago when unnamed players were speaking to the Post about bitter differences between coaches and players?) So I see Shanahan's influence here, even though I completely agree with you that the leaders on the roster have long had integrity, discipline, etc.

Totally agree. These players will not be with the team next year regardless of talent. I for one don't want them. You can't get rid of all of them in a single season or you wouldn't have enough players to field a team. Last years roster was full of them.

A piece to a very good article in the post. Anybody at the start of this season who was in favor of this bum and saying that he wasn't a distraction, please stand up and let me :lowblow: .

Ever since Shanahan was hired, Haynesworth has defied him. If Albert had a few defenders in the past, the number of players on his own team who are ready to roast him has now probably hit critical mass.

If Haynesworth ever plays another game for the Redskins, I'll be mildly surprised. I told four veteran Redskins leaders I planned to write that Haynesworth should be cut. I may have added something about using a shovel to remove a large steaming pile from the middle of their locker room. Tell me now: Am I wrong?

"Blast away," said a Pro Bowler. "Now you feel our pain."

Another Pro Bowler kept punching the air with his finger in approval, as if he were at a religious revival agreeing with the preacher as I ranted about how Haynesworth was a team killer who was antithetical to everything Shanahan was trying to accomplish.

A third Pro-Bowler shook his head and said: "Go ahead. I can't say anything. Someday I will. Man, I'd love to be in the room when he and Shanahan met."

Imho, no. Until guys like Hall actually put forth maximum effort during games I'm going to say no. A team that has discipline, integrity, and accountability doesn't put forth the pathetic effort on tackles that we saw on Sunday against the Giants.

Hall - unwanted by the Falcons, released during the season by the Raiders, could not tackle Jake Delhomme - Maybe Hall and guys LIKE Hall are just not as good as we would like them to be. Just a thought.

This is the sound bite that really troubles me about this guy. He is all about ME. No TEAM. ME!

Earth to Haynesworth! You played in a 4-3 last year with the Redskins and you complained then.

I agree he's not that good, but the effort is lacking from guys on too many plays.
