Shawne Merriman was just waived, and even though it appears his best days are behind him, the dude is only 26.
He was born in D.C., starred at Maryland and IIRC was a Skins fan growing up. At one time he was an absolute beast, and he would be a HUGE improvement over Lorenzo Alexander who has played well, but doesn't seem to be starting quality. The defense could use more playmakers. This is Merriman's 2010 Scouting Report from Scouts Inc.
After missing all but one game in 2008 with a knee injury, Merriman returned to the starting lineup for 14 games in 2009 and finished with 36 tackles and four sacks, both of which were well under his career average. He looked a bit tentative and did not appear to fully trust his knee. He is a powerful, explosive pass-rusher who can be, for all practical purposes, impossible to block by a single offensive lineman. He is explosive with his first step and shows excellent acceleration off the edge. If he returns to full strength, there is no reason to think he won't be playing at an All-Pro level again in 2010.
Coming off a knee injury, but could potentially be a huge low risk-high reward signing. I would prefer "Lights Out" to Randy Moss to be quite honest.

No. He's been a shell of the player that he was prior to the suspension...I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
I would much rather have Moss... if you look at both of them at this point in their careers, Moss is still a playmaker and would be a deep threat and a red zone threat, both of which the Redskins need... Lights Out may be a slight upgrade at LB, unless he has fully recovered, but knee injuries are a scary thing...
My children, gather round! No retreat, no surrender; that is Spartan law. And by Spartan law we will stand and fight... and die. A new age has begun. An age of freedom, and all will know, that 300 Spartans gave their last breaths to defend it!
No one releases a player if they still have gas in their tank in mid season... (unless, as with Moss, they are turning burning bridges into a new art form) .
No.

I am 100% fine with cutting Chad Simpson - who doesn't play anyways and has been injured for Merriman. Portis will be back after bye week and Simpson is expendable again.

They have to release him. He was placed on IR and now he is healthy so they have no choice.

For those sayiing no...why on Earth not? Unless you are pitching in for his contract there is absolutely no reason not to. There is no draft pick compensation nor long term commitment. He he shows back up and can be healthy he greatly improves our LBS. If not, hes gone next year. Makes no sense not to pick him up. Can those not in favor explain to me how he is not an upgrade if healthy? And why this is a "bad" move if we sign him?
Mike/Bruce - If your going to spring big this year in Free Agency, please spring big on offensive lineman! I cant watch Rabach anymore!
Merriman, if I recall correctly, is a protegé of Lavar Arrington. So, this is something to keep in mind.
I would have the Skins staff do a medical assessment, bring him for a try out and check his locker room behaviour.
IF he passes those three tests, I would take him for a modest salary as a one year test. Negotiations or a release would follow next ...
... We do need help at LB. We do. Whether his skills fill this gap, I am not sure but I would be willing to try.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
He has played in a 3-4 his whole career in SD, so that helps. If healthy, and he can rush the passer, we could actually run a true 3-4 and try to fool the O Line.
The basis of the 3-4 is you never know who is coming, and you can bring LBs and drop Lineman or vice versa. In the Redskins 3-4, we rush the same 4 every down. Our 3 down linemean and Orakpo. Where is the confusion in that?
If Merriman is healthy, then you could start seeing those exotic blitzes where we drop 1 and rush the other, or drop both and rush our ILBs. Could be interesting

I'd be in favor of it, as an experiment but not expecting it to happen or caring if it does.
This is exactly why I do not want him here. Zo is playing VERY well right now. He is going to be able to play that position for quite some time. Why waste a role player like that?
Miss you 21

good point.

RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!

The National Anthem sucks.
What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.

Or... they could move another player... they had a choice.

He hasn't been good since 2007, has had a number of injuries, and would take snaps away from guys that have shown potential (i.e. Lorenzo Alexander). Not to mention the fact that it's time to stop looking for shortcuts as a team and to actually develop our own players instead of taking washed up players from other teams.
Damn, I wanted him for the Skins. Obviously he's in high demand since the worst team in the league claimed him almost immediately.

He has been completely ineffective since his superpowers were taken away and he's been hurt all the time to boot (which is the usual result of somebody coming off go juice).

Good luck getting him healthy again.
Thank you Doctor Wahoo for your brilliant medical diagnosis.

Not a "usual" result there Doc...
Not only "usual", it's "expected". Steroids work by making you heal quicker. Thus the reason you can work out more. Working out makes you stronger because your muscles tear slightly allowing regrowth. Most people can only work out so often because your body needs to heal. Steroids make you able to heal quicker thus giving you the ability to get stronger quicker. That's the fallacy about steroids..that they're for lazy people. You actually have to work out harder, but it makes working out harder and more possible.
People who get off steroids get hurt because their bodies either (1) can't hold the weight they currently have, (2) they were never that strong or could get that strong on their own or (3) they can't heal as quickly. Thus the reason you see players go to the DL about a year after getting off steroids.
I'm not a doctor. I just look at the results. He's been on the DL and ineffective since losing his "super powers".
Your success at OLB is predicated on speed and quickness at huge sizes. He has been unable to replicate the same speed and quickness since coming back. Anybody want to guess what happens to Brian Cushing when comes back? I see another David Boston situation....
