You got that right .... why is this so tough for some of these ego maniac coaches to understand ... if he were to just be honest and say, I SCREWED UP ... that would be the end of it ... and by doing so, McNabb could continue to take the high road as we all know he will, while Shanahan restored his own credibility in the eyes of everyone ... especially the players.
The players know the deal ... and you can bet that most everyone of them feel the same way we feel about this. So is it a good thing for a team to look at their head coach, while thinking to themselves .... LIAR ... ?
Now, you have this quiet festering boil that doesn't look nearly as bad as it feels.
If this nonsense continues, and at this point there is no reason to believe it won't ... pretty soon you'll see a billboard up with a huge picture of Jim Zorn that says ... "Miss me yet?"

I am only speculating I have no clue to the truth. Look at this way. If he was being honest and believed that Grossman gave us a better chance and then heard from Mr Dan....If you had a screaming owner give you hell and had to deal DC media..... I am not trying to say this is what happen just that it could have I have no idea. If any of you guys know exactly what happened behind closed doors please tell us.
It could and probably is a case of Shanny being full of it but unless we are or were there what do we really know?
I can't wait to hear the presser...When it is up I might think like you guys.
VetSkinsFan wrote:After all that, you bench the 6 time Pro Bowler. The 5 time NFC championship QB.
This is incorrect. The Sexy one and McChoke have each won one (1) NFC championship. McNabb has made it 5 times, but only won once. I think McNabb's defining moment is throwing up in the Super Bowl.

You mean to tell me that the cardio was a problem and for THAT reason you left him for ALL but the last 2 minutes of the game???
And you expect ANYBODY to believe that crap?
Come on Mike, you are too smart for that. If Donovan has cardio issues, you know he would not be playing any time even for preventive reasons.
Now, you have more questions to answer than you had in the first place. An admission of responsibility and perhaps an apology to fans and players would have sufficed. Now ... CREDIBILITY and TUST are at stake.
How does McNabb play with cardio issues but big Al doesn't ?
Exactly. How does Grossman get into better football shape than Donovan holding a clipboard and running with the Scout Team.
In addition, have you even taken a look at Grossman??? The dude is probably the most overweight non-OL/DL player in the league. He is as puffy as they come. How is Grossman in better shape than DMc??? That excuse for benching DMc by Shanahan cracked me up.
This is just getting worse and worse. Chris Motensen comes out and says the Redskins disappointment with McNabb is the worst kept secret in the league, Shanny benches a Hall of Fame quarterback with two min to go... because apparently he's not studying or practicing hard enough.
The guy is the best quarterback the Redskins have had in 25 years, the Redskins finally are showing signs of progress, establishing credibility...
and Shanahan panicks, burns the goodwill he's built and sabotages the team's newfound chemistry.

well I am not so sure I would say 25 years. We a had a few I would prefer over him...Like Brad Johnson (who won a SB) or Trent Green or Mark Rip...Just a few. But, I hear what you are saying.

Correct me if I am wrong...Aren't some of you guys the same ones that said the press makes something out of nothing? Yet because we had a terrible game all that goes out the window? All of our games have been terrible but we won half of them. If wins are the only thing that matters then we are 500. If wins aren't the only thing that matters then quit saying so.
Wait till the end of the year or better yet wait for 3 years before we run Shanny and company out the door. If you have a beef that is fine. I know I do but people are going nuts over this. Me included. I am looking at this as a real bad game and there is nothing we can do.

This is what is killing me!!!! I agree 100%
Totally, I mean, I never expected the Redskins to be great this season, maybe 9-7at BEST and that was fine... but this is the worst thing Shanahan could have done. He's taken the team for a huge step backwards.

I just read the last 6 pages of this, and it looks like the mob is pissed, not that the mob has any idea of what is really going on behind closed doors, but apparently EVERYONE is in 100% agreement with each other. Not me though so you're wrong on that front. It's just kind of funny to read how pissed everyone is over this. Looks like the 3 years of letting this grow has come to an end.
First off, Kyle called a great game if anyone needs a clue to the interworkings of a game, so why is he getting thrown to the wolves? I can site SPECIFIC examples of why, which many in here can only spew recycled examples like he didn't run more bootlegs, or he didn't throw enough slants, without really knowing WHY they didn't do that. Did it ever occur to anyone that other teams are taking things away from us? I hate to talk down to people that say those things, because I understand I don't know nearly as much as NFL coaches do, but to hear people put the playcalling down without having any knowledge on the subject gets me fired up.
As far as Mike is concerned, he may not have made the best decision to take his QB out of the game, but in all honesty, if you watch the game again, and pay attention to how poorly McNabb played in this game, I think you may agree with his decision to pull him and maybe not. I want to watch it a third time to really take it all in. But right now, in my opinion, he benched a QB who failed to manage the game at the end. They had to pass at that point in the game (trust me when I say that playcalling was not at fault in this game), and he should have tucked the ball and ran or taken the sack. I think what people are so pissed about now is that he lied about why he did it. So what? No one is pissed at McNabb about lying about why he threw the interception. He said his arm got hit and he was not able to follow through, when in fact it wouldn't have mattered. He threw into triple coverage. The pass was right on, just a bad decision.
Now all this goes without having watched the presser nor having been in the locker room to hear the truth (not what the media spews...especially that Philly puke Mortensen), but all I can say is simmer down. You'll be much more pissed off if we lose what we have going right now. I am begging everyone in here to let this play out. Follow blindly if you need to, because the way some react to situations in here is blind as can be or at the very least, short sighted. I'd hate to be in battle with some of you guys who continue to instigate things. Good lord, talk about having locker room or battle ground cancers.

Mike Shanahan is an experienced, veteran coach. How could he possibly do that?
No, I’m not talking about the Rex for Donovan thing. (More on that tomorrow.)
I’m talking about his decision a few minutes earlier, his decision regarding what turned out to be McNabb’s last play.
With 2:15 remaining, the Redskins trailed the Lions 28-25. They had two timeouts left and it was fourth and 10 at the Washington 28.
Shanahan decided to leave his offense on the field and try to convert the fourth down. He did this rather than punting the ball and trusting that his defense could hold the Lions without a first down. With the two timeouts and the two-minute warning to go, the Lions could have been punting the ball back to the Redskins with just under two minutes left.
Instead, McNabb was sacked and the Lions kicked a field goal. That triggered the decision to insert Grossman in the lineup, creating the firestorm of controversy we’re experiencing this week.

Oh I loved the decision to go for it because they got help from the two minute warning, which, had they punted, it would have been close, and would have allowed the lions to real off about 40 more seconds, which, according to these odds makers, probably would have put the game out of reach. 3 points in that situation was no big deal because they would have most likely kicked a field goal from where they would have ended up after the punt anyway and the clock would have been at 1:15 instead. I know that's not exactly what this guy is saying but just wanted to comment on it.

I just listened to the presser and it seems to me that he provided enough details on his thinking that someone on the team (namely Donovan) would have first hand knowledge on whether he was full of it or not.
As for the excuse, I'm actually ok with it. He wasn't able to run the two minute drill as effectively because of his limited reps and the fact that he is so banged up. The guy had a conversation with McNabb earlier in the week about how healthy he was. I stated on here about five weeks ago that I noticed that on a long run by donovan, he pulled up as he hit the sideline and appeared to grasp for his left hamstring. It makes sense. His balls were horrible tonight. Watch again and you'll see every long ball is a duck and underthrown. That is not Donovan. Both extra points were off the mark wide and high respectively. He was short on a ball to Moss down the sideline. He was way off the mark on a couple screens to Torain. McNabb is not the most acurate passer, but that game he was exceptionally off the mark.
Anyway, I'm looking at what was said and matching it up to what I observed. Only Donovan can say whether he was lying or not. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until McNabb says otherwise. He will be the ultimate judge. If he re-signs, it weighs in favor of Shannahan. Unfortunately, we won't know for a while.

Donovan was "protected" by a combination of the most inept, old and poorly coached offensive line in the NFL. Donovan was sacked, rushed, beat up all game long and you still wonder why his game and stats were questionable???
We better go and grab a real OL from the NCAA because this one is the WORST OL in the NFL. I think Trent Williams will be a good O lineman eventually but you need five solid guys and we have NONE at present.
Donovan has got us wins in situations where other QBs would have lost those games.
And the most importtant point that you miss or decide not to address:
The Head Coach LIED and keeps on LYING. The issue is far from play calling, which is not my main beef anyway, or the ineptitude of our OL, the REAL issue now is how to win the TRUST and CREDIBILITY with p[layers and fans?
Tough job if you ask me ...
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
mike shanahan is bringing a division to this team. You can talk about last year's QB all you want, but he did not win any games. Our fans are already starting to treat McNab like the Eagles did. I now don't like Shanahan for that decision. He underminded the skill level of a great QB.
I watched the press conference and I think everyone is overreacting.
The accusations of dishonesty are way over the top. I would not be surprised if Shanahan thought about a lot of the things he explained in the press conference. There may have been multiple factors that came together at the point he made the decision. We will never know all the things that were going through his mind. In my opinion he does not need to explain everything ad nauseum.
The accusations that his ego is out of control is ridiculous. Who did you think we were hiring? The last thing we need right now is a meek, humble and soft spoken coach. Maybe in his personal life those are good attributes, but not as a football coach on a team that has been missing discipline.
My fellow fans, there is no need to drive the bus off a cliff after every loss. Eight games ago the vast majority of you were saying "I trust Allen. I trust Shanahan. Snyder finally did the right thing by hiring some real football people." Ah how quickly those sentiments go out the window at the first sign of trouble. Now halfway into a season where we are 4-4. At the beginning of the season many of you were predicting a 6-10 or 7-9 or 8-8 finish. In other words, we are right on track. We knew there would be growing pains. We knew there would be a lot of changes. But now instead of trusting the coach, fans are second guessing everything -- from personnel selection (OL), to discipline (Haynesworth), to coaching staff selection (K.S.), to the defensive scheme (3-4), to the timing and reasons for a QB change. What did I leave out? I'm sure we could make a much longer list. As usual, fans who convinced themselves that they would be patient and have low expectations in the beginning are once again ready to blow everything up and start from scratch.
Ok I have had a day to let this sink in and I will say this, Shanahan is creating a culture in DC. Its similar to what what has happened up in New England.
He stood his ground with big Al and while we may not be getting our moneys worth we are getting more out of Haynesworth than we did last year.
He cut 2 underperforming RB's and found a guy in Torrain who is willing to play they way he wants.
He has found a few other guys in Banks and Armstrong who continue to perform much better than anyone could have expected.
Now with McNabb... while I don't agree with the benching, remember when this happened last year and Reid benched McNabb for Kolb, when McNabb returned as the starter he was a much better QB for the rest of the year.
I think what Shanahan is doing is telling the players, this is his team and its his way or the highway. (I could have sworn I saw Kyle mouth "what the hell his he doing" on the sideline after one of McNabb's plays) I think it was gutless to throw McNabb under the bus twice in two different ways in two different press conferences but it is what it is. Bottom line is he is getting results and we are a better team then we have been in years with Shanahan as our head coach. It may be uncomfortable for a few years as we get the complete team he feels he needs to take us all the way though.
