Interesting signing. Davis was a stud at Clemson but hasn't done much in the NFL. He's limited by his lack of speed and physicality but will be interesting to see what Shanahan can do with him.

He ran a 4.5 and was the "Thunder" in the Thunder & Lightning backfield which featured Davis and CJ Spiller. If anything, he has an injury history. But, I wouldn't say he lacks speed or physicality. His speed and power were actually his strengths. And, if he would have left Clemson after his junior year, he was graded as high as a 2nd round pick by the NFL Advisory Committee.
If anything, I think Davis is a great signing if he can remain healthy. With the emergence of Peyton Hillis, and the eventual return of Montario Hardesty (whom Cleveland moved up in the draft to take) I think the Redskins benefited from his release due to a crowded backfield of players with similar skills in CLE.

Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

He's quick, not fast. At the NFL level he doesn't have the speed to break big runs. Still a great signing though. I'm excited to see what he can do.
James Davis RB, Clemson War Room analysis Strengths: Has good size and strength. Shows the instincts and vision to find holes and cut through them. Is a strong ballcarrier who absorbs hard hits and runs through arm tackles. Is not a fumbler; wraps up the ball in traffic. Shows good hands and plucks the ball away from his body. Runs hard after the catch. Flashes the ability to cut-block effectively in pass protection.
Weaknesses: Is a one-speed runner, lacking the explosive burst to consistently get through holes. Lacks the home-run speed to score long touchdowns. Is not an elusive runner who makes tacklers miss. Runs upright, absorbing hard hits while failing to deliver a blow. Shows bad technique and only adequate effort in pass protection, allowing opponents to pressure the quarterback.
Positives: Tight skinned athlete with good overall musculature. Good all-around athleticism. Quick to the hole. Good lateral quickness to make defenders miss in the open field. Can stop and start to elude defenders and is a threat to gain big yardage every time he touches the ball. Not a bullish runner, but has good lower leg drive and is at his best when he gets significant carries. Flashes explosiveness and can run through tackles. Secure ball handler.
Negatives: Characterized as the "Thunder" in Clemson's "Thunder and Lightning" combo of he and C.J. Spiller, but isn't necessarily a strong interior runner. Effective interior downhill runner and will bowl over the occasional unsuspecting defender, but lacks the explosive power to gain the tough yards after contact. Only marginal production as a receiver, but shows the hands and body control to be productive in this area. Lacked effort and technique as a pass blocker and really struggled in this area during the Senior Bowl. Missed most of the 2008 spring recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed running back James Davis to their practice squad. To make room for Davis, the team released Jeremiah Johnson from their practice squad.
Davis (5-11, 218) spent the first seven weeks of this season with Cleveland, where he played in four games with four rushes times for nine yards.
Davis was originally drafted by the Browns in the sixth round (No. 195 overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played in two games that season before being placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Oct. 3. To that point, he had rushed for 15 yards on nine carries and made four receptions for five yards. In the 2009 preseason, Davis rushed for 186 yards on 24 carries (7.8 avg.).
A four-year starter at Clemson (2005-08), Davis finished his career as the school’s second all-time leading rusher with 3,881 career yards and 47 touchdowns on 753 attempts. He was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection following his sophomore and junior seasons.
Davis was born on Jan. 1, 1986, in Atlanta, where he attended the city’s Frederick Douglass High School. .
I think it's a great, no risk pickup. He's a guy who's never gotten the chance to get off the ground due to injuries and he's a perfect fit for Shannahan. He's constantly described as a one cut back.

Can you blame them? Who really expects an old back to come back good as new after having his groin muscle tear to the point where it was HANGING OFF THE BONE!!!!
Hadn't heard of this guy until this signing, but, from what you cats are sharing, this may become the best tandem in Football.
I think this kid was a great signing...hopefully we'll get to see what he can do on Monday night. Sounds like he is already picking up the system, but we need someone who can pass block well.

Tweeted Davis, "I thought stayin' here could be a good fit plus the Skins took care of me."
Teams can increase practice squad salaries in order to convince them to stay in town. It also sounds like Davis is confident he could get a look on Washington's 53-man roster before the season is through. Davis is someone to keep a close eye on with Ryan Torain (hamstring) and Clinton Portis (groin) banged up.

It's a downright SUPER move.
this could give new meaning to: "hanging OFF the Bone"
