They have to be making room for someone, or else this makes absolutely no sense. Why not at least wait until after the Packers game, either way? He must have pissed someone off, to be let go on a Saturday before a game.

Sounds like a scouting issue to me. Aside from a few no-brainers (Taylor, Orakpo, Williams), we haven't been in the habit of making good choices. There are a few value picks here and there (Golston) but no real gems aside from

Then I read this quote from him after being asked what factors may have contributed to the decision:Maybe I just wasn't the type they're looking for. Maybe they just don't want a big-play receiver who can do everything. Maybe that wasn't appealing to them.
That, friends is exactly why he was released. He's full of crap, he's a me first player and he doesn't fit what Shannahan wants to do here. Part of building a great franchise is changing the culture surrounding the team, that's what Shanny is doing, and I don't have a problem with it.
ya thats the deal....dude was all me first and junk....thats all i could figure....a diva wr type like ocho cinco etc.....but without the pedigree......I hoped he could work out as well particularly cuz i think he has way more upside that Galloway or Roydell williams

relax everyone..!!! Mikey Shan has a plan. He has no belief in the Vinny picks.....you watch and see: Kelly won't be here, even after he heals up.
No..Mikey want's HIS picks, not the old regime's.
I see Armstrong, Terrence Austin (PS) and Banks moving up the charts.
If this happens - we will be getting younger.
Hail to the Redskins.

I think they were desperate for WR's and wanted young ones when maybe they should have explored other options. They were good athletes, they just had questions, hence they were 2nd rounders. DeSean Jackson I guess had the size/receiver skills issues, but he overcame his shortcomings. Second round really is the round the Skins struggle. They got Rocky and Fred Davis, but they seem to miss out on some possible gamechangers in that round. They aren't great in later rounds, but I have seen worse than them.

I don't blame people for being disappointed about DT. Its just year after year of bad picks with this team, guys who don't pan out. It would be nice to draft our own "Vincent Jackson" for once.
Shanahan knows what he's doing. If he was willing to cut a young, big receiver, there was obviously a problem.

That's not fair at all. Had we not focused on the O-line then everyone would have rightly bashed us for that. We couldn't address every weakness at once and the line was more then one hole. We actually did pretty well there for the first year. That left us looking over the left overs for RB. You SERIOUSLY think we should have used our options at running back? Be serious.

Look to the players that have been moved/cut by the Shanahan regime... Have any of them had an impact elsewhere? Campbell? Benched... Marko Mitchell? Looking for a team as far as I know...Reinhardt? Jets practice squad... ARE? In a situational role where he belongs... (At a much lower salary) LJ? Parker? Come on... He was cut because his value to the team is less than Keiland Williams, plain and simple.
It's just a game.

I don't see how people can be upset about this. I also don't understand why people keep saying this guy has potential.
How many years does it take? Only 1 for a real WR that is going to make it in the NFL. Thomas has great altheltic ability, and was fast. He played WR for 1 year at Michigan State. He was a track runner, and NOT a WR. This guy never showed any real potential. He couldn't run routes, and was just another bust mistake by a misguided talent level reader Cerrato.
On another note.. Does this mean Banks will be returning kickoffs too this week?

I have a feeling we will be seeing Banks returning kicks early and with a lead. I do not think Shanahan trusts him to make smart decisions with the ball when its close or late in the game. Just what I have noticed.
Support the troops, especially our snipers.
The only fault I find with this move is maybe not doing it in camp. He had every opportunity to get on the field and couldn't do it, even with our craptastic corps, so that speaks volumes for me.
As for his quote, you have to be kidding me. And Shanahan's ego ain't the issue. The best example is Haynesworth; let's say that did involve shanahan's ego. Pretty sure he was still given an opportunity to show what he could do and worked himself into the lineup.
Thomas fans (of which I was kind of one) need to face reality; this guy can't play, has the wrong attitude and was taking up roster space. I could see him turning into a Howard type BUST (caps used because howard really sucked), where only redskins fans understand how truly awful he is, while others only remember his kick return ability and think he deserved that MVP. But Shanahan, as with haynesworth, will be proven right on this.

I'll add that the OL makes the RB. We know a team that won three SBs in ten seasons with three different RBs, (as well as three different QBs), but only one center. Some guy named Jeff Bostic.
Drafting for OL was a sensible move, and dropping Devin Thomas also sensible. It appears that Shanahan tried him and found him wanting.
Yes, Malcolm Kelley probably goes as soon as the team is allowed to drop him.
Good drafting and good decision on WR.

Just saw this on cbssports.com about DT. DT was not cut b/c he stinks.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/WAS
WR Devin Thomas was released Saturday because of his approach. "He's got the talent, he sure does, but he's going to have to commit to being a pro," coach Mike Shanahan said. "I talked to Devin many times and told him what he needed to do to be a pro player."

You can add this for what it's worth...
St. Louis could use a wideout, which immediately led to speculation the team could be interested in recent Redskins cut Devin Thomas. Rams G.M. Billy Devaney, however, says that's not going to happen, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Mark Clayton is out for year, but the Rams don't want Devin Thomas

. . . as do Campbell (considering what we gave up), Ramsey, Taylor Jacobs, and Rod Gardner IMO. Lesson learned: Don't draft QBs or WRs.

I was worried that was the problem. Things didn't look too good for Kelley either . . . I hope he learns from Thomas's experience and comes back ready to play.

If nothing else, he was showing that he could do a good job returning kicks. Would it really have been that hard to mix in some bubble screens and end arounds to Thomas? Instead we're going to see more of 93-year old Joey Galloway and the rest of our pathetic wr corps. Watch Thomas go to another team, get a real chance, and blow up.
Age isn't the determining factor to make an NFL team, production is. (with respect to cost) Potential is something Devin was short on. (or he would have contributed more and still be a Redskin) He had plenty of time over the past few training camps and seasons to show something, anything. Banks has beat him out for the return job and Armstrong, Galloway Williams (et al) beat him for the WR spots. Good luck Devin.

Not sure how many more shots a guy is supposed to get??? Three years and the guy never shows squat. The only thing he ever showed was a little kick returning ability this season. AND HE KEEPS BOBBLING THE BALL DURING GAMES!!! When you get paid big money to play, you get cut when you can't play. That is the NFL. (not Shanny's ego)
Also, I am pretty sure they tried to trade him. It looks like no one in the NFL was interested in giving up even a 6th round pick for him. 'Nuff said.

I also don't understand the entire "potential" thing. He is a WR. It should take very long to catch on as a WR. Sure, first year numbers aren't particularly good for most rookie WRs, but you typically know by their 8th game what they are made of.
Outside of that 1 reverse running play last year, I didn't see much from DT to invest in. I would have liked to see him on the field, but if his mouth got in the way of that (and from the quote about him being the best and able to do everything) I can understand why they decided to cut the cord.
It's too bad because it doesn't even appear that he is in the least bit humbled by the cutting. You need to learn from your experiences. Best of luck to him, but he needs to understand that putting in the work is just as -- if not more -- important than talent at this level.

With the most recent info coming to light, I can understand the reasoning behind him getting cut. I still woulda liked to see him on a few packages in the regular season to show that he doesn't deserve the roster spot. But alas, I'm just a fan...
