Well we learned today that we are still a pretty bad team, especially in the second half, and especially in the fourth quarter.
We can't run the ball worth a damn when it matters.
We are giving up way too many points.
Even so, I feel good about the Eagles game. Although the Redskins always play down to the level of the competition, they can also be competitive against a competitive team.

I think it is less that we can't run the ball when it matters but more that we refuse to run the ball when it matters. 1 rushing attempt in the 2nd half...Unbelievable.
Bob 0119 wrote:60 points in two games? Yeah it's great we had five sacks last week, and we certainly are seeing more turnover come our way, but what's the point if you let teams hang 30 points on you every game?
I was curious; the point of the switch was to generate more sacks and turnovers, right?
I understand that this is a work in progress. That's the caveat. However, I'm not seeing it so far.
Last year, after 3 games we had forced 3 turnovers. This year, we've forced 4.
We're on pace for 21 TOs (last year we had 17). With 7 sacks, we're on pace for 37.3 sacks this year. Last year, we had 40.
We're on pace to get slightly more TOs, and less sacks. So far, the returns on this 3-4 defense, solely from sacks and TOs, are not positive.
Of course, then you add in the fact that we've given up a LOT more yards and, most damaging, a heck of a lot more points, this switch looks like a disaster.
Last year we gave up 30 or more 3 times in 16 games. We've already managed that twice in 3 games. It's going to be a long season, folks.

Not sure why people keep saying that we play down to competition...We suck. We were a 4-12 team last year, the 4th worst in the league. We ARE the bottom. 1991 was 19 years ago. We are not an elite franchise, so please explain?

It's still early, we're not playing complete games, and we are streaky. The defense and the offense are still learning. This team was 4-12 last year and I for one am giving it time. We lost to a crap team, but give it time to come together. This is a 3 year turnaround.
With that said,
Special teams really hurt us today. The kick out of bounds and blocked punt is total crap. Last week, the block cost us the game.
I think Portis is done with this team. Whether you like it or not, a practice player is coming up as a better runner but hurts us in the blocking game. What is he doing falling down? He does this all the time.

Unfortunately, this game really showed that this team is in serious, serious trouble, and it's not simply a lack of talent. This great coaching staff really doesn't look much better than what we've been used to seeing around here ... the only positive difference has been McNabb because he's able to complete a pass down field. Other than that ... from my seat ... it looks like a net step backwards on both sides of the ball.
Starting out 14-zip against a poor team shows poor preparation, and the execution was absent at all levels.
And it was even worse in the 2nd half .... poorly schemed on offense, and terribly coached on defense.
WHY do you lay back on the outside receivers and watch them throw quick screens, time after time after time ... and not switch to some form of press coverage to take that away??
All I can say is that I'm really sick and tired of watching these guys laying eggs ... and this one is right up there with some of Zorn's malfeasant attempts at NFL coaching.
Both Shanahans, and Hasslet owe the Redskin fans and Dan Snyder an apology for today's 60 minute passing of gas.
^^^^^^
I saw this on the game thread, and my reply to bring in Jaron is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! That would not be a good idea. I know Jaron very well with his days in Chicago and then the Bills. He would get eaten alive in DC. Do not bring his name up EVER again!

Kicking the ball out of bounds is poor preparation? A punt block is poor preparation? That's why we started 14-0. It's all execution.
Having a punt blocked is certainly poor preparation.
Watch the play again, because I have. Doughty didn't even block a player. He ran up to the line and half pushed one of our lineman in the back and didn't slide out to pick anyone up. You are blaming his missed assignment on poor preparation? Watch the play over again, and I think you will think otherwise. Then explian to me how coaches could have prepared him better?

Kieland Williams blocked the wrong guy on the punt block. That's why the guy had an open shot on the punt.

That's not much an explaination on how preparation would have helped on a normal punt blocking assignment

To me it didn't look like Williams knew what he was supposed to be doing...that's preparation.
Or... he just blew his assignment... y'all are just arguing over shades of gray now...

Week three into the season and he doesn't know his assignment yet and that's preparation? I guess that makes sense. We should spend the entire week on punt blocking.

I put a lot of blame for this game on the coaches, not all but a lot. We had 2 backs averaging almost 7 yards a carry and neither cracked 10 carries for the game, that's inexcusable in my opinion especially when we took the lead momentarily in the 2nd half against a team with a poor run D. The defense has been bad, as stated, but Kyle is not doing them any favors with time of possession. 2 weeks in a row now we've abandoned the run completely in the 2nd half (last week is more understandable with our passing success but still not forgive) and it's costing us because our D is staying on the field a long time.
Our defensive substitutions have been horrendous as well, I watched in the Dallas game and again tonight when there are short yardage situations and it seems we have the wrong personnel on the field. Sometimes it seems we have 2 d-linemen in these moments and no AH. I know AH shares in the blame of what's transpired but if he's on the team you have to use him, otherwise ship him out. Shanahan, while being a great coach, has a reputation for running players off his team because of his stubborn ways and it's happening now in D.C. and it could cost us. One of my biggest fears when we hired him was that our D would be ruined, I've lived in Denver for 20 years and watched him guide excellent offensive teams but struggle to win consistently since Elways retirement mostly because of defense and personnel decisions and it looks like the same will happen to us this year.
So far I give Haslett a big F, Kyle a C - and Mike a C -, I know the o-line is not set yet and not a strength but you have to be more balanced and our unbalance has cost us 2 games in a row or at least contributed to those losses.

I'm sorry ... did they run the kick from the 40 to the end zone? Or was it the same lousy defense that gave up the other 16 points?
You now ... that same defense that lost a 17 point lead last week .... and but for the sake of a holding penalty would have lost the first game too?
And if Fred Davis would have steped up to block on a field goal try, we would be 2-1. No one is going to tell me that Shannahan does not get this team prepared. The team laid an egg, and took this team for granted. Haynesworth was just on saying that same thing. When is the blame ever going to be placed on the players?

+1
Are you saying +1 as in you are agreeing with his comment, or +1 meaning thats how many more games we will win this season i.e. 5-11? Either way, moot point i guess are both would be correct.
