Win Now (2 years), Or Build Question

I just wanted to know what some of you guys thought , the philosphy of your team.

Do you think they have a win now attitude as in 2 years. Or do you think they are trying to build something that will be able to maintain at a decent level for years to come. I know with the modern NFL you cannt keep all your players, but you can build where as you can be a contender every year.

Which way do you see your franchise going?

Absolutley. In today's NFL, there is no reason not to have a win-now attitued. So many teams go from worst to first it seems like the best idea to build for a championship run every season. The only team that can even be considered to be built for long-term success is the Patriots, and I contribute much of that to coaching as opposed to talent...

I see the skins just trying to win in 2 years and if not, then the team will probally have to be blown up to start over.

When was the last time a team was blown up? The Redskins have been reloading as opposed to rebuilding ever since Norv Turner's first season...

We're in the "win now" faze, I think. If we don't win during this time, you'll see a lot of player changes down the road...but I wouldn't call it being "blown up".

In the past few years, the Redskins have had the talent to win "then"; however, the area that they were really lacking was at the "coach" position. I think that is why a lot of us fans are excited about this year. Once again, the Redskins are putting together a pretty solid team on paper (with the exception of the DL)..and, unlike years past, we have one of the best coaches at the helm.

When asking if we have a "Win now" approach, it's kinda confusing, however, because I don't know of any team in the league that will be coming into the 2004 season and "NOT" have a "win now" philosophy.

But does it not seem that the RELOADING PROCESS does not work. Thats kinda what i meant by reloading.

The Redskins have the talent to WIN NOW. The missing ingredient was Gibbs and with him on board there is no reason to think we can't make the playoffs this year.

Well it hasn't worked for us (yet) but that doesn't mean Snyder is going to be patient to let anything develop.

He looks around the league and sees the Rams, Patriots and Panthers and believes he can have his team in the Super Bowl inside two years, no matter how bad his team was the year before...

I think both, Win now, Plus alot of these guys are young, these days you build a team to win now.. Players dont stick around for years anymore like they used to, Good old free agency.. GO REDSKINS :rock:

they said the same thing in 2000....... Snyder might not be a football genius but at 35(or whatever age he was when he became an owner) and owning the biggest franchise around... you gotta believe that he's smart when it comes to dealing with money..... I don't think he'll be unloading all of the "Star" players in 2 years... that would just be stupid business to set yourself up that way..... I truely believe he's done a mostly good job in bringing in players that the team needs over the past couple of years... I just think it's been a coaching problem that we've had that hasn't been getting it done.....That's about to change though...... for the better!

All teams are in a "win now" mentality (except maybe the Chargers). :wink:

When a team starts out a season in the NFL, I don't think any organization says, lets win 2,3, or 4 years from now, otherwise that team would draft all college underclassmen and let them learn to play together. I believe the frequent coaching changes the Skins have endured the past 5 years has done more to undermine the team than any other single factor. #-o

I believe Gibbs knows this team is ready to win now, a core of true Skins is in place on both O and D, and many of the core players are under contract for the next 4-5 years. In short The Skins are out to do both, win now and continue to be contenders every year. This is the Gibbs style of management, proven in the NFL and NASCAR.

Either way the biggest thing (in my opinion) that JG is trying to do is change the culture.

We have been loosing and, lets face it, been playing some very bad football over the past 10 years or so.

It's the attitudes that need to change.

We need to reverse the current culture of loosing and unprofessionalism.

Win now if you can but most importantly try and set the table for the future.

I believe JG saw this is one of his last challenges in life.

To right the ship AND set the rudder for future successes.

That will be his legacy. I think he felt bad leaving the team in the shape it was in. he did not plant seeds for the future. This time he will....or die trying!!

I don't think thats the case. Joe Gibbs has come back with the same mentality and same thought process that he had back when I was two years old. He hasn't changed, if anything he has gotten wiser. He mastered football and went and did a decent job with racing. His teachings are universal and don't pertain to just one sport. To say he has come here just to win would go against his ways.

He has come in here to instill a solid foundation which is a winning formula.

That may be just a little naive, Chris. Joe Gibbs is a fiery competitor. He came back because this is a seemingly insurmountable task. Believe me, Joe is not here to ensure that some future coach will have great success with the foundation he built, although that will certainly be a byproduct of the new regime. No, Joe is here to win. He'll tax himself greatly, and will do whatever he has to do to win. You can't be a successful coach in this league with the attitude that, "Well, we probably won't win many games this year, but in four or five years this team will be a force to be reckoned with."
Joe didn't spend nights on a cot in his offices all that time ago just because he loved the Cookes and the community. No, he did it mainly to win football games. The other stuff came as a result of his winning ways. He came back to the Redskins because this is where his heart is, and also because he knew what the reaction would be. He knew the players would be awed by the attentions heaped on him. He wanted his grandchildren to see that their Grandpa was a really big deal in football. Lastly, he wanted to try to do what so many others have failed to accomplish...
I hope we can all say, at the end of the day, that it worked.
